Hello /o/, I need a professional opinion on a car I am looking at (1991 Volkswagen Golf GTI).

Any thoughts/comments are appreciated, I plan on purchasing this in December for my son.

That is not a 91
>>
>>16244611
Good luck when it breaks
I just got done working on a 2003 jetta.
Never. Fucking. Again.
>>
they're good on gas
I would get a diesel
did 6L/100 once and a 700km on full tank
diesels aren't fast and neither is an old GTI but they are fun
>>
>>16244611
Your son is going to hate you
>>
>>16244611
>FWD
shit
>>
>>16244611
That's what it said on Google, thanks anyway.

>>16244611
From what I heard, the parts are relatively cheap to replace, so I won't have a problem when it comes to repairs. He wants it manual too so maybe there's some potential?

>>16244740
Diesel, noted. Thanks for the tip.

>>16244993
Funny you should say that, he's been eyeing 90s hatchbacks for quite some time. The other car he wanted was a 1991 Honda Civic SI.
>>
>>16245044
It's idiot-proof though
>>16244611
Golfs are overpriced, but you're rich anyway
>>
>>16244611
They are brilliant make sure you dont get a shit one though get the gti if any and you want the mk2 not the mk1
>>
>>16244611
just bought one the other week and I'm loving it so far. Its quite an old car now so checking for rust should be top priority. Also when you replace the rocker cover gasket make sure you check if it is cork or rubber. if you replace it with the other material it won't seal properly and spray oil all over the engine bay
>>
>>16245044
>this post
shit
>>
if he gets into an accident you will no longer have a son.
They are fun little cars, but I wouldn't put my child in one. If he likes hatches, and you want him to survive being hit by a brotruck get him a saab hatch or something made this century.

I had a 1981 Scirocco I got free in 1994 and ran ten years. My bro is still driving it. I only sold it because have trucks and motorcycles aplenty.

Get the Robert Bentley factory service manual. They are easy to work on but if the Bosch injection shits the bed, throw a carb on it. I didn't use a kit because some Dodge Omnis came with VW engines since it was a rough copy to get Chrysler thru the gas crisis. I made an adapter but you can use typical "Holley-Weber" adapters. I ran a rebuilt Chevy Vega carb which is a 2bbl Weber clone as are some Pinto carbs.

Change the timing belt and idler when you get it. Easy work. Many parts sources online.

No diesels as noted, but busted timing belts have likely killed most of those.

The engine block is trisexual, having been used in diesel, carbed gas, and Bosch mechanical fuel injected versions. Stock mechanical fuel pumps bolt onto the injected engines.

Have fun!

So the initial car is pricey? I saw a couple running in my area for about 8-9k.

>>16245738
Noted, wasn't planning on settling for less anyway.

>>16246165
Messy! Thank you, very much noted.

>>16246200
I read that they are very durable little cars so I would much rather have him in that then a motorcycle, which he INSISTED on having for his first means of transportation.

>>16246461
Looks like I'm going to have to get my hands dirty haha, and thank you!

Thank you everyone for being very cooperative, I'm learning a lot from you guys.
>>
>>16244611
my professional opinion is: get fucked lol

>>16248980
