Earlier today an anon asked me in a thread that got deleted what country I am from that slaps a 115% import tax on diesels and said it sounded like sulphur-free paradise. The country in question is Uruguay. It isn't really sulfur-free paradise though, because the diesel they refine here is shit (to the point that it breaks common-rail engines if you use it). There's another diesel, imported, called "10-S" too. It has 10ppm of sulfur. The regular one has 50ppm.
Gas and diesel prices here are as follows:
97 octane, lead free, 30 ppm sulfur: UYU 44.10/liter USD 1.55/liter USD 5.86/US gal
95 octane, lead free, 30 ppm sulfur: UYU 42.50/liter USD 1.49/liter USD 5.64/US gal
Diesel, 50 ppm sulfur: UYU 38.70/liter USD 1.36/liter USD 5.14/US gal
Diesel, 10 ppm sulfur: UYU 49.20/liter USD 1.73/liter USD 6.53/US gal

The whole tax situation has had terrible consequences on safety, most people drive around in chinese cars or Susuki Altos which are about as bad. Thankfully VW has recently brought the Up! which is really safe in case of collision and has a nice price, but there's still the issue that overtaking becomes a hazard if you have an anemic 55 hp engine. Any questions about the country and what it's like to drive here, what are the cars like, etc, are welcome.
