They're both much bigger than they used to be. Generally, you can get a TRD Tacoma cheaper than a TRD 4Runner. Really, any Tacoma cheaper than a 4runner these days.
Tacos are easier to find in manual and with LSDs, or locking diffs. And the taco has slightly better approach angles off road stock.
But any built rig is better than stock, so buy an older 4Runner or Taco, and build it with the money you save. That's what I did. Mines the one on the right.

I have some 1cm thick Kevlar rope that I'll string around it but due to the Canadian soil and geology, I'm afraid of it snapping.
We discussed this in the last ORG and talked about it with the normies. Steel wire replaced every 2-4 years seems like the best course of action up here.
>>16241555
Oh thank God. It's 300 CAD which means after conversion, works well. Also, ALL goods have a 25% tariff just for being Canadian up here (tyres, books, life, etc).
I was more worried that this was a generic brand and I fucked up but for 5 tonne rating and considering I don't do technical trails, I'm satisfied with this purchase.

>>16238519
So I'm about to spend about 10k on a clean LC would 15k in offroad mods make it unstoppable?
>>16241697
I think 15k is too much, you really don't need much. front, back and side armor, a lift, tires, and a winch. 8k maybe.
>>16241721
I want a RTT and the ones I saw were 1k-3k and I'm sure the snorkels are expensive. Will probably do an engine rebuild to start from scratch.
>>16241601
>I don't do technical trails
You're on /ORG/ bro and I see you spending a few grand in these threads for offroading. Do you really expect to resist the sweet call of rock climbing a year down the line?
>>16241697
Paying a premium for a LC over a cheaper 4x4 is pointless if you plan on putting $15k into it.
It'll never be unstoppable because building it for one purpose will sacrifice it's utility for another purpose.
For an expedition vehicle weight isn't a huge issue but you're going to want a ton of space meaning a larger vehicle and likely a more universal tire that works well enough for most purposes but doesn't do any one particular thing better than the competition. You'll likely want to stay fairly low to minimize rollover risk and losses in fuel economy. Think F350 with a slide in camper, or Suburban, Excursion, etc. with very small lift and All Terrains.
For a mud truck it's going to be about lift, tires, axles, and power. The bigger the better as far as suspension goes. You need not worry about interior space to sleep or store food, water, or extra fuel.
For a desert truck you don't even need 4x4. Long travel, low weight, and plenty of damping with tires that aren't too aggressive because you don't want to dig down too far.
Build any of these trucks to be unstoppable for their specific purpose and they will suck if you try to use them for a different purpose.
>>16241781
Here in Arkansas it's about mud and river crossings, I wanted something I could attach a tent to or if need be sleep in the back. I'll be using it to travel for 3-6 months overlanding.
>>16238519
Nice Alahu my Ackbar. You got all the sandnigger terrorists jelly af.
>>16241812
Unless you're a 5'2" manlet you're going to have trouble sleeping comfortably in the back of an LC.
If you've even considering sleeping in the back I'd just go ahead cross the smaller SUVs off the list. Suburban/Excursion will give you room to sleep with a little extra, or you could look at pickups and get a cap or slide in camper. Assuming you don't need the back seat for people, an extended cab may be advantageous just for the extra interior storage.
If you're looking at GM platforms, it would be better to avoid the 6.5l diesel but if you do get one then relocate the PMD. For Ford I'd avoid the 6.0l diesel because IMO it's just not worth bulletproofing when there's so many other options out there that don't need extensive work to be reliable.
For mud, river crossings, and overlanding, you may want to go a bit taller than the average overlanding vehicle but not as tall as the average mud truck. It obviously depends on how much of each you do but I'd expect 3-6" of lift depending on platform to be a good balance.
>>16239228

>>16241535
Barn door burbs are rare? I never knew this! As far as camping goes, best we wait till spring when the hunters leave and the weather is nice. Sleeping in the cold is a bitch and I don't want to run the truck all night.
>>16241458
Depends on the motor. The 5.3 Vortec had an oil issue. The old 350s were practically bulletproof. Haven't had much experience with the 454s but I hear they're thirsty pigs. The 6.5 diesels are an acquired taste, but they have a plethora of nightmares with their computer controller systems. I personally wouldn't shy away from it purely on mileage, but I'd be as careful as I would with anything with those miles.
>>16240880

>>16241874
I concur! As a 6.5 owner though, I wouldn't shy away from them. While I agree the Injector pump and related sensors/controllers suck, and you won't get the performance of a newer Cummins/Powerstroke/Duramax they are pretty effecient! I am able to get 20MPG with a 4.10 rear end and MT tires!

Yep. Topkick/Kodiak handles. You can get four new handles for ~$100 on Rockauto but the rods you need are out of production and getting hard to find. I'd keep an eye out for C3500HDs at local yards to loot the rods from.
The one on the left is my roommate's 97 k1500 SLT Suburban. He's got my old Dana 50 and SF 14 bolt he's going to throw under it with dually hubs and run stock the stock H1 24 bolts that my spare set of Bajas is coming off of.
Newer younger thread so I thought I'd ask.
Tundra fag from the last threat. Since I'm bouncing between a Taco and a Tundra, if I go the Taco route, would it be beneficial to go for the TRD Pro package or get the TRD Offroad package and just mod it to where I want?

It would be beneficial to not buy a 1/2 ton or lighter truck if you plan on using it like a truck.

We're YOU the one I was supposed to trail with near Windsor (with[out] the YJ, right?!)? Whitetail in winter, tho? If so, that'll justify the 8hr drive and $120 in fuel.
Also, regarding offroad areas, I guess I'm still young so I like to spin dirt on back roads or construction sites when I get a chance.
Here's a pic tonight I took 4 the memes. It's offroad but you're gonna have to belieb me - she was in PJs so couldn't leave.

I know what you mean about dirt roads and construction sites. That's mostly how I get by. That and there's a few short trails, abandoned rail right of ways, and power line trails.

I'M COMING DOWN TODAY AND WE'RE BAGGING US A WHYTETAIL.
Doesn't seem ueber freedom like some states have it. I could go and hunt coyotes, wolves and other weird birds who stayed for winter but I can also do that here )^:
Mebe Windsor. I don't know any actual trails that south but can ask the normies. Or I'll actually go and buy the offroad trail maps they have for 20 shekels at the trucc stops.
Terrain is less field and more mud. The spotty aquifers (what with the great lakes and everything) keep the dirt muddy until it freezes over in January. I've never gone so far south past London but that's what I imagine it to be.
Once it freezes over, the mud turns into ice so that could work out to our long-vehicular advantage.

One day I'll fix my blown the fuck out '98 454 K2500
Has fairly nice interior, custom exhaust that came with it, and (some) spun bearing(s)
I wheelied too close to the sun last weekend and fucking desecrated one of my front forks. Pulled up on the handlebars so hard that my shocks fully extended and collided on the way down. Fortunately nothing actually bent besides the internal spring, both the inner shaft and outer sleeve are okay, so I just slid the shock off the axle, fitted it back together, and slid it back on.
Obviously these shocks are shot and I'm only delaying the inevitable front end replacement, but at least I can continue riding it until they're completely destroyed.

>>16245938
Shocks aren't that much to replace. Just be glad your whole suspension isn't guffed
I've heard stories of my friends breaking their knees or shins when the shocks don't absorb as much as they should. So at least you're still posting here! :D
>>16246069
Yeah these front ends aren't terribly expensive, an upgrade to a better front end from a later model will likely be around $200. I just have a tendency to hold out until the bitter end before replacing larger parts. If these shocks continue to commit suicide while I'm riding I'll probably weld them solid before I dish out the coin for an upgrade. The real problem is that I'm riding an '82 Big Red like a sport trike, these early Big Red's weren't designed for full-time wheelie poppin' swamp rips, they were designed to haul fruit and veggies around the farm and occasionally go for casual rips along the river on weekends. It's only a matter of time before I cave on a front end swap and throw some sport forks on the front that are more appropriate for heavy riding.
>>16246069
It got about 3MPG towing a 24' camper trailer

Main bearings, oil gave up the goose and the engine seized. I'm afraid to look inside, but I don't have time to pull the engine anyway so it's been sitting.

Good for the city since I would go to my old job's field and rip doughnuts in the baseball diamond during the winter. I would also get stuck in the winter and need to call the tow truccs to get me out. Good times.
I would not recommend doing any of that but 2WDs are definitely off-road capable as long as you're not a high idiot like myself.
If you do what >>16246452 suggests, I would get a traction aid in case of stuck and have a friend on call. Four rachets are good for pulling your vehicle out by the frame with another vehicle (and since they're nylon, the snapping won't kill anyone) and they even have $100 boots for you to get unstuck if you want to spring that amount.
Otherwise, just make sure you keep your hand OUT of the steering wheel (otherwise you can break your arm if you hit a rock and the steering wheel jerks 360deg), bring lots of food, buy a CAA / AAA membership, and have money to maybe trade in your exploder down the line!
Good vibes to you, anon!

An extended cab vehicle will never have a long bed anymore (I think the last one died out with the K2500) to make it look less awkward. They're just way too long and when parked at my local hardware store, they have to find two parking spaces or push their head / ass out 2 whole feet.
Aside from practicality, look at aesthetics
>pic highly related, hehe
It's about matching. My motherfucking RANGER has a 75inch bed and 32 DuraTracs on them. Tyres make it look weird (and I get some extended tyre wheelwell rub) but the bed matches the cute nose up front and the lowness makes it look alright). The bed can be sacrificed since people know it won't be used in America. Fleeters are going to buy low engine capacity, long beds and these will be put into tattoo parlour parking lots where Dodge knows they'll be going. It's a shame. The 1500 really isn't THAT bad of a vehicle...
THE 2500 WEIGHS FUCKING 3 TONNES. I know they have to market it as off road capable but the reality is that no one will do any sort of slightly technical trails in these vehicles.
>>16250054
I really don't think your Ranger would be happy towing a Jeep.
And the best bet is to not crash into trees kek
>>16250182
Though, this is another case of my retardation since I could always drive the fucking Jeep. (jeep is 3000lb, trailer is 1000. Ranger maxes out at 6000 so I would be good, though).
Regarding the tree crashes - does a "Standard" crash like that ruin the bike like it does to motorcycles? I would imagine the speed to be under 20 so it couldn't do THAT much damage, right? Or am I just too optimistic when it comes to durability of vehicles.
Also, what about my body?

I broke the clutch lever and shifter and bent the front rim in that crash, fixed with zip ties and kept riding. Dirt bikes are pretty tough for the most part. Some race bikes have magnesuim case covers that are brittle and can break in a crash, ask me how I know [pic related, fixed with jb weld on the trail and kept riding], but most dual sports have standard aluminum covers that are pretty tough.

>>16250276
That's good to know. So it's much like armouring vehicles in general. Good to know that they're pretty tough and with some know hows and a standard set of hood repair boxes, you can fix minor crashes.
/sci/fag rant incoming:
I don't understand why they don't make titanium covers for most of these items and opt for more expensive magnesium or less durable cast aluminium. My friend has an armoured after-scraped the entire bottom of his jeep on a giant sharp, pertruding rock with no indents after it came out the back whatsoever. He had it in 4WD on the two side wheels and the rest of the car was balanced on the skid plate. Literally god tier material.
>>16250293

I don't see why I shouldn't get one. Huh. How do they handle in snow and on ice?

>>16250307
Fuck that looks so gross. Get this shit off /ORG/.
>>16250307
Aluminum is cheap enough that most of the covers are thick and strong, they are also good about denting/bending instead of tearing or cracking in the case of a fall. The mag covers are purely to save weight and are just made as a cover not as a protective device. I think titanium covers would be very expensive, I'm not sure that magnesium is more expensive than titanium but I don't really know about metal prices.
>>16250390
I'm surprised they would even dream of using magnesium on something that abrades occasionally against rocks and shit. Muh fire hazards and whatever.
And alright. I'll look at the cheaper, armoured dirt bikes. I'll see if my mechanic FAB has a dirt bike vendor and see what prices they are. Would be great for april when I can just go play in dirt. How waterproof are they? Can one keep up with ATV mudders or do you have to lift it above your head / find an alternate crossing?

This as they are still quite maleable and non-abrasion resistant. Magnesium hydroxide forms on the layer along with magnesium oxide whereas aluminium only forms the oxide (and in small doses with the hydroxide but is thermodynamically unfavourable). Solid magnesium itself is also harder to cast.
TL;DR ignoring-science edition: magnesium is less durable compared to aluminium
>>16251945
axle rebuilds require a few measuring tools. Some specifics on the tolerances of your rebuild and an understanding of how to get it to mesh right.
There is a youtube video of rebuilding a ford 8.8 and that showed me that i dont have the tools or the patience for that shit unless it is a project car that i dont need on a weekly basis
>>16251945
Add in
$500 is really not bad if he does it right
>>16252026
So:
TL;DL, pay the $500 and get it fixed when it needs. It's actually not the axle itself but could be worth poking around and tapping with a piece of wood.
Right now, it's the pinions that are pretty much shot. I think I've got another 25 000 left on them so I'll have to get it done in the next 2 months or so )^:
Also, went high tread mudding a few days ago and the gear is slipping. Weird since I didn't do as much clutch movement as I normally do when on the lightly technical trails.
I can get it to around 2000RPM and not have the engine stall through clutch slip. Normally, I wait a few hours of dribing and the issue goes away (water evaporates, mud falls out, tinkerbell comes and sucks the gunk out) but this time it seems like the slip is going to be long.
I really don't have time to dig into the cylinders lately but is there anything I can do to potentially help or diagnose a superficial issue in the meantime? Right now, I'm just hoping it'll get better than get worse.

I am not sure how you figure you have xx amount of miles left on a dead pinion. Also a pinion that is "gone" means that you aint moving forward. "Going" on the other hand makes more sense.
The more metal you have floating in there may mean more shit to replace when the guy gets in there and he isnt going to give you anything for free unless you give him regular work.
If your pinion is damaged then your ring is likely damaged too so i would confirm if $500 is for the whole deal or just for his time
>>16252069
I'd look for a good used axle rather than rebuild. You can pull cover to inspect.
Go to the Ford Truck Enthusiast forums and Ranger forums for more detail.
If your clutch slips it's clutch time.
Mudding is for trucks you can easily afford to destroy. If so, buy parts or another truck and use yours for other parts. Offroading is a very labor-intensive and expensive hobby so get good at doing all your own work. Buy whatever tools you need and have at it.
fair to assume many of you camp out of your rigs?

I go to him since my friends have recommended him due to off road parts and he's generally adept.
Only recently going to him due to automotive help since these moderate issues that I can't do without the specialised tools. Last time I saw him, he had just floated it would cost "around 500" as it wasn't a main concern at that time.

Not sure if the Blazer got the TBI the same year as the half-ton RWD but I've actually really enjoyed having it. Simpler than port injection and less finicky than a carb (not to say that dicking with carbs isn't fun in its own right, but for a DD TBI is very stress free).

Yeah... about that last part.
Pinion bearing and axle rebuild is "$400-$500 if you don't need any weird other parts that I can't see right now". I think I'll eat that cost.
I asked him if it was worth replacing the axle and he said "this is better than any axle you'll find unless you want one of those offroad re-geared for like $1500". I have people who are looking for your axle right now for their Jeeps despite it being LSD". Welp - fair enough, senfam
Also, the crotch is skimming less today so that's a good sign. There's a small shake when overcoming inertia and it drops down to 1000RPM. Otherwise, it's perfectly fine. Featherfooting leaves no engine lug.
Maybe clutch in April.

Ya it needs work but it's a solid body and frame. I have a 5.3 vortec that I'm gonna do a mild build and refresh on to swap in with an nv4500(when I find one) mated to a np205. My parts truck has a ff14 bolt and a 44 front with 5.13 gears and lockers. Probably gonna run somewhere between 35-38 inch tires when it's done.
Gonna get rid of the cap and go with a soft top, sheds a big chunk of weight and makes it easier to go topless
Also needs a paint job badly. Whoever painted it before did a complete hack job no prep or anything. It was originally brown then painted red, then black. Front fenders were originally blue

XJs are stock 17 wheels but seem to be after-market to fit tyre size which is why you'd think they're 33s.
With the comparison and cut out wheelwells, I'd peg them at around 35s?

Forgot that word existed. also, you spelted "armoured" wrongingly.
I meant armoured against rocks and stuff, lol. The adjective as a standalone complement and without the adjective:object relation implying "bulletproof" like you want it to, lmao.
That was part of the joke, ehehe.

Have a good weekend, anon! I hope I made some people happy this Friday by giving them an extra five or so minutes off their commute time(s).

You've made my Friday better by helping other people. This is why I like /org/, we actually do shit. All that happens in /tg/ is people jerking each other over midships and Celicas

Right on, cool project.
I'm no stranger to shitting paint jobs, last owner of my truck spray bombed the entire thing matte brown and tan when the original paint was brown and tan. I'm sure he had a reason, it may have been going bad in some spots, but he didn't even put a layer of primer on, literally just spray bombed over the existing paint. So now all along the bed rails it's starting to peel, resulting in a weird mixture of matte brown and shiny brown spots.
