My 17 year old son recently got I to cars, and wanting to work on them. Right now he has a 2001 Lexus ES300. There is nothing wrong with it and nothing to work on. So we were thinking about getting a different car, one that we can work on and improve.
I want to keep insurance down, so no turbos. But it would be nice for him to have a fun car to drive.
Safety is a must. He wanted a CRX until realizing they would kill him.
Front or all wheel drive would be necessary, we live in the midwest.
He and I both prefer Japanese cars, me and the Mrs both have Subaru, so he's grown up liking them.
What's the best option here?
Pic semi unrelated (would be his dream car)
>Subaru
Get him an Impreza
>>16229037
Find a 2.5RS, and do a father-son STI swap.
>>16229037
>Front or all wheel drive would be necessary
If he has a different DD I don't see why this is the case
anyways
Miata
Nissan Z car
subaru impreza (first gen coupe with the 2.2)
>me and the mrs both have a subaru
Then it's settled, get him an evo
>>16229089
We would be replacing his lexus, no room for 5 cars, and it would be nice not to spend so much.
>>16229037
Step 1: Get Outback Sport
Step 2: Lift that bitch with Forester suspension
Step 3: knobby tyres
Step 4: hell yeah
>>16229037
has to be fun, front-wheel or all wheel drive, no turbo and japanese..
here you go
>>16229079
This looks like a really promising car. Seems hard to find though
>>16229091
This, if you want your son to do better than you have, get him the subaru killer
Also I would have been hype as fuck if my dad bought me an evo at 17
Volvo 700 series or a 244
>>16229167
>Subaru killer
On the track? Sure. On the trail? Not even close.
>>16229181
Haha, true
>>16229181
Brings up the question: are you guys looking for a track-esque car, or a rally car?
>>16229202
He has always been a fan of rally and the culture that comes with it, ever since we played some rally game on the Xbox when he was 5 or so. But this car is not going to be something he would actually rally in.
>>16229111
Can't tell if this is stupid or genius
>>16229208
Then I'd say either look for a 2004-2007 STI, a 2.5RS to engine swap, or a first gen Impreza to engine swap.
>>16229230
Hardmode: Import a 1992 WRX from Japan next year. They turn 25 next year.

>>16229091
Forester and outback, there's no competition going on here
>>16229297
He would absolutely love to do this, I'm just not sure where in the Nebraska area you would go.
Take out a large life insurance on him and get him a turbo crx.
>>16229037
Get him a 3-pot Geo Metro.
Cheap to insure and loads of fun, and they sound GREAT straight-piped.
>>16229037
Dont buy a subaru. absolute money pits. NZ has the highest ownership of subarus outside japan.
if you are considering doing a car project together, dont pick something in the too easy basket. how about a old japanese classic car: something like a toyota crown or nissan 260C or a nissan prince/gloria or a old mazda?
Legacy or SVX
>>16229167
>Subaru killer
Only the evo 8 and 9 were better.. every single other generation was bested by subarus equivalent.
get a celica
confirmed get him an OBS, best car ever
>>16229142
you think you're joking, but that looks awesome
>>16229037
Forester XT's are super fun after you give them an STi conversion.
>>16229037
cheapest bet would be a civic. Modded, they can produce quite a bit of power.
Get your son an Alto and your family will rule the touge for generations

>>16230979
I'm not as much of a fan of how they look
Get him a Datsun 120Y and swap some V6 engine on it
Get an evo. Less head gaskets and more power
>>16229037
Can you be my dad?
>>16230999
i'm not joking..
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gTzkZsiC6BM
>>16233519
That actually looks amazing
>>16233836
It was banned in street drifting because it put Nissan to shame.

Might just be me but I wouldn't replace my DD with a project car. You'll need garage space to work on a project car anyway so you're gonna have space problems regardless from the sounds of things.
I would recommend a 350z, they are pretty fun to drive and under 10k now
>>16234358
Looking more around 3k
>sounds gud
>looks good (as far as welfare/drug dealer cars go)
>drives good
>fast
>cheap as fuk
>bulletproof engine
>guaranteed to need some work since its 15-20 years old
Not really sure about safety, but parts are about as cheap as they get for japanese cars, and with a haynes manual you can do anything
in the US, bug eye imprezas like op pic were non turbo until i think 2003
you can get non turbo bug eyes pretty cheap, and you'll probably have to fix them because people treat subarus like shit because
>lol they dont break!
im telling you now though, if you have to fix the headgasket, just forget about it
>>16233466
Evos are way less reliable than Subarus
>>16235737
In what way? I'm curious how something with fewer gaskets, cams, and lacking a split block is much less reliable.
