Southern Ontario, senpai.
Will trade cigars for lenses. Also weed.

So should I get that option and then get lenses afterwards? The GoatPoaster recommended a cheapo $250 camera but I can probably swing $300 to finally be able to take enough good pictures to participate in this thread with things besides Swifties and walls of text.

I can do a trade of cigars for lenses. Would be tight. and yeah that's a super solid camera. My cousin had one that he traded for a D3200 and it was sweet. You can do a lot with the 18-55mm lens. I just prefer prime lenses because of the hipster DOF and I like the sharpness. I have a few that you could use.

I looked at Trackers, Sidekicks, and Samurais all over Colorado for months. Everything was beat to hell, modified more than I wanted, or just over priced. I really wanted a stock (or very close to stock) one. After about 6 months, one showed up as a trade-in at work. It was perfect (and super cheap: under $2000!). Thus the legend of the Goat began.

Does anyone have a better idea for a bumper respray than a regular powdercoat then paint?

Vinyl wrap job? Something that won't mind if i ram into a few saplings or even a full tree.
>>
>>16198300
Replace with a tubular bumper
>>
>>16198317
Less stable than mounts. Plus harder to mount other things like snow plow.

What are the tubular bumpers coated with? Vinyl wraps?
I mean, I don't min repainting these things every 2 years.

Are early 2000s XTerras reliable? I just need something to last a year or two before I have a house and garage to store something nicer. Is spending $2500-3500 on an Xterra a good idea?
>>
>>16198587
Same platform as the Frontier (navara). 2000 is old gen so that's good. I personally wouldn't even get a frontier newer than 08. Drove one for a week before getting my Ranger and compared to the F-150, Ram, and Frontier, the frontier did not fair well.

Old class Nissan is very reliable and since its on the 1st gen Frontier platform, you can't go wrong. Downsides are aftermarket parts and safety.

What's the body rust looking like? 4x4 working?

A few years have issues with coolant getting into the transmission (bad design). Very expensive repair. I'd check what years are affected before purchasing. Outside of that, the usual complaint is they're underpowered for their weight.

Usually tubular bumpers are powder coated.
But since you have such a boner for vinyl wraps, just put that on it.

But this too.

Tracker/Sidekick has a lot less aftermarket, but they have IFS (faster/smoother for light trails, can't do the big bouldering though). Also a few more creature comforts, generally.

Are you trying to say IFS is a positive thing? I'll give you that it is slightly more comfortable on road but come on man. It's undeniably, less capable, less strong and less reliable. 3 incredibly important things for /off roading/.

its time to get some clothes that fit my man that is really bad.
>>
>>16200106
Well, not exactly... IFS is smoother (my wife complains if it's too bumpy), but that's about it. I don't do anything much harder than mining roads, so a beefy solid axle is more than I need.

cool ill give you that then. if youre only doing mining/forest roads than theres no need.

as for the jeans, i always hear guys say this like the only two options are disgusting, beyond-baggy jnco style jeans or skin tight skinny jeans.

just get a normal fitting pair my man. it will be a whole lot more flattering.
something like pic related is a decent middle ground.

LED lights would be awful for blizzards, you need something that shoots down onto the road, not something that throws light errywhere.

are stock jeep xj's good offroaders? A bit worried about the ground clearance of the live axles.

Ok come on though. If it went everywhere that would include down the road.

After you go down the long list of little shit you need to fix first like the headlight circuit. Otherwise they're fine just throw skidplates on and some 30's, lift if you need to.

I've personally never hit an axle

I did high center and tear off my transfer case skid plate once though. trim the fenders and disconnect the sway bars for full flex and they are decently capable stock
>>
>>16201411
>>16201412

Those tires look pretty large compared to the stock ones, thus raising the ground clearance of the front axles significantly.
I've been told it would require a 2 inch lift and something in the realm of 265/75r16 tires to have the ground clearance of a 4runner/prado, patrol or pajero. Something I really really don't want to do.
Also see a lot of guys converting the rear leaf springs to coils. Looks costly, but how does it improve performance when compared to the stock rear suspension?
Only mod I want to do is skid plates, maybe put an lsd in the rear and run on good all-terrain stock sized tires.
>>
>>16201447
Those are 30s, and aside from trimmed fenders it's 100% stock. Mine even has stock front and rear skid plates, and a stock transfer case skid until I broke it off.
>>
>>16201461

thats patrol-tier flexing there. Very impressive.
>>
planning on checking this car out this weekend. It's a 1996 XJ, 4.0l 190hp, 4 speed auto. Really hoping its the full time transfer case.
Owner says runs great and the engine runs smooth. States that he fixed all the electrical gremlins years ago.
I'm new to jeeps and is there anything I should look for, be wary of?

Hey /ORG/
Any of ya'll know about the hardbody?

Just picked up this '86 beauty for less than a grand, and aside from some small stuff, it seems to be in pretty good condition.
Any advice on how to make it a half-decent off-road machine, if it isn't already? I know the engine's a bit weak in these, are there any good swaps for this car?

Either way, it doesn't look like I'll have to spend more than $1500 to have it in tip-top shape, after everything is said and done.

be careful with a lunchbox in the front that can get seriously scary around turns.
if you are going to lock both axles you should definitely switch that. lunchbox in the rear and selectable in the front.
or just run selectable on both, that is ideal, more expensive though of course.

as someone who has only had base model utility/farm trucks... there is something i don't understand.

Why does every "offroader" need to take the obligatory "i just disconnected my sway bar" shot like this picture? The tracker in the OP can most likely go just as far off road reliably, without the nasty tendency to flip over on pavement

I always assumed it was called articulation.

Then again solid axles off road also seem odd to me. Its the standard for power handling and simplicity, but the ability for the "pumpkin" to take impacts constantly, and be the lowest part of the car just seems less than ideal.

Ive pulled a number of jeeps out of the mud with a datsun d21 base rwd truck.

I go camping in a rwd hatch back. To date I have never been stuck anywhere that required assistance from anyone else, though i have pulled a blazer with a trailer up a muddy hill with it.

Granted I am not rock crawling, but i also don't try and go through/over things i know i cannot. Going around and picking a better route always work better than just trying to power over/ through it.

im sure you have (not sarcastic.) a lot of people do completely retarded shit that is either out of their skill level, out of their rigs capability or both.

i guess were just talking about two different things here though. when you said the tracker could go as far as the jeep i was assuming you meant through the same terrain. the jeep will of course get further if there isnt a way around all of the obstacles, if there is though then of course theyll get the same distance.
not really sure what your point is here.

if youre smashing into your diff "constantly" you dont know what the fuck you are doing.
solid axles provide much better maneuverability over all obstacles this is not even debatable.

In CO at least, Sammies start at about $1500 if they run and have a decent body/frame. Can go up to almost $10000 if tricked out. Most on CL are asking $4000-7000 with some mods, probably accepting offers at 80% of asking. Lots of mods, but not like Jeep.

Trackers/Sidekicks start at about the same, but I haven't seen many fully modded out ones. It's rare to see them at more than $3000-$4000. They can't do full articulation (IFS vs solid axle) and so you're fairly restricted to medium and lower difficulty trails, forest roads, etc. No bouldering for these guys (without swapping to solid front, which some guys do).

These guys are my heroes. http://www.suzukiconversion.com/suzuki_sale.htm

1982 k10 guy again providing an update.
Think I'm switching off the LSx route and going with a 6.2 diesel. I know it won't ever make the power the LS will but there's a rebuilt one for sale about an hour away from where I'm getting the truck. It has a turbo on it, but its a shitty ebay one that I was gonna replace with a stock turbo from a 6.5 diesel get a set of stans headers then run a 4 inch straight pipe.
Should wake that weak diesel up by a lot, I've seen numbers of 200hp and 400torque which combined with the nv4500 and 5.13 gears should have more than enough power to carry me around 70+ on the highways while netting roughly 20 per gallon on 38" tires. Easily better than anything a gas v8 could get me.
Think I've decided on a gun metal/charcoal grey paint over a black since black is incredibly over used on these trucks.
Gonna get a set of black wheels though and paint the frame/underbody/axles with a black epoxy. Should really make the grey pop in comparison
Pic is an example of what it should look like

Hope she rots in fucking hell, but anyways getting away from that topic before I get worked up over it again.

I originally financed the jeep when I was only driving like 15 minutes from my house for work. Got it for a reasonable 7-8k I can't quite remember from the dealer for 4 years 200 a month. Fast forward a year I'm not working about a 60 mile round trip from work 5 days a week not to mention ex whore is the exact opposite direction about about 20-30 miles further from my house. So had to hurry up and find something, best option was this cruze for 6 years at 255 a month. If I could go back in time I would've been smart stuck with my beater ranger while saving up to buy something outright and never financed anything in the first place.

I've heard of a technique like that called the debt snowball or something like that, probably will give it a try soon. I can get the ring out of my hair by spring/summer, close to paying off my gander credit card just 60 left on that. Biggest ones are the car and student loans roughly $12k each still. Could use my tax return on one of those to take a massive chunk off

This shit pisses me off.

I'm allowed to go buy a shitheap 90's pickup, jack it up to unsafe levels, cut the cat converter, and drive it to work every day.
God forbid I buy a 2005 Defender, or import a hilux. Oh, but wait, cars over 25 years old are OK, because... reasons. It has nothing to do with safety or emissions.

It angers me to know my tax dollars are paying for a slew of agencies to track down vehicles like this, so that numbskull can spew shit like "we kept an unsafe vehicle off american roads". It's all for the benefit of auto companies, making sure that you can only buy what they put out on the dealership floor.
>>
>>16207085
>I've heard of a technique like that called the debt snowball or something like that, probably will give it a try soon.
The sooner the better, because compound interest is working against you in this situation.
Don't use your tax return on those loans if you still have a balance on credit cards or something else, because the high interest of the ring/credit cards will basically undo the big payment on your low interest loans.

If you can sell the the ring for a decent amount, do it as soon as you can, because those debts are taking away money from you, and the ring isn't getting more valuable.

I'm sorry for yelling, anon. I do appreciate the subtle tay reference though.

Since I'm here wanting information on emergency kits, (see >>16208650), why the fuck do people say "start your cars to do this" or "start your cars to keep warm"?
If you're back tracking, how do you even get stuck in a rut (other than if you're silly enough to rip an axel or drive or something) that allows you to keep your vehicle running but not let you drive it out?
I can't imagine not being able to call a friend to come winch you out or simply pulling yourself out. Whenever anyone I've known has been stranded, it's always because a fuel injector crumbled or they ran out of gas or another thing happens that prevents them from starting up their car.

>Why such heavy depreciation on a Jeep when they're built like bricks and reliable as hell? Yota 4runner?

It depends a lot on the area. Here in Co Springs, a 97 with 200k miles will sell for $4k easily, and if you want one for less than $3k you'll probably be looking at 80's models with at least 200k on them. If you want one with low miles, in good condition, you're looking at at 6k minimum.

I wanted one, but I ended up buying a 4x4 hardbody for $900, so I can dump 2k into the thing and still come out ahead.

Fuck no. Never again ask something so stupid.

Anyways on a different topic I might be making a move on a 5.3 vortec tomorrow for $250. It runs and only has 165k on it. Be the perfect candidate to tear down freshen it up and put it into the k10 project. All I would need to do next is find the nv4500 I want to pair it with, then the 38" tires to go with the 12 inch lift I have already. That would be all the running gear taken care of. Easily be able to recoup the price of the engine by selling the 2 350s I have and the th350 trans that's fresh rebuilt.

Well samurais are usually limited by power the most so I'd say anything that would demand power such as deep mud pits or rock crawling. Samurais can be solid axle swapped which can take away some of their defiencies as far as crawling goes but s wrangler beats it daily in that department
>>
>>16210236
if you are planning on doing "road trips" you are going to fucking kill yourself in a samurai. probably the worst on road manners of all time. its insanely bumpy - will give you a fucking massacred back, loud, shaky, lots of rattles, your tailbone will hate you etc.

a cj isnt great either but much better than the saumari.

and dont get me wrong i absolutely love the samurai - when off road. but if you plan on doing longer trips with it you are going to have a terrible time.

If your choice is CJ-7 vs Samarai, it completely depends on how far you are going to travel to do your adventuring. The benefit about the CJ-7 is that it's customisable for crawling and works OK (12-15MPG highway) for highway speeds. Samarai does the same thing but you wouldn't want to travel 2+ hours on the highway on it without modifications (especially under today's conditions). Treat it like a CJ-5 that is capable of offroading.

That being said, the samarai has a CURB weight of under a tonne which means you can tow it with any semi-modern SUV to your landing site and then take it for fun. And crawling it around the city is always fun.

Have you considered: Jeep TJ

>CJ-7 a great
come to think of it, it could just be that I use my Ranger as a comparison or it could be the offroad tyres that have a larger point of impact and absorption.
Or it could be the fact that when you climb into a Wrangler, you don't expect bumps so when they're smoother, you think they're "good suspension".
Or it could be like the Defenders where you fall in love with their signature bumps.

I have a biased point of view on Jeep suspensions so that might be clouding my judgement. I've never ridden in a stock Jeep CJ-7 (and I don't think anyone has in a long time). Hmm.

>>16210098
CJ4s are antiques and should be treated as such. I've never seen one in real life (probably has something to do with living in Canada, though). CJ-5s aren't THAT bad and installing a heating system / roof is not hard. Remember: the lego of cars.

Also, fucking sweet. I wish we Canadians had access to those military surplus modified HMMWVs or even LAVs to fuck around with offroad. That'd be sweet.

Huh. Well I guess that explains it further.

Could you elaborate on your choice, though? I'm surprised that with spacers (or is that a torsion/leveller?), you don't get wheel rub when you turn the tyres after moving up a whole 40mm.

I love the tires, theyre big, cheap, gnarly looking, and do well off road. 245/75r16s to 285/75r16s
I could have bought a nice set, but they would have been literally twice as expensive as the Nankang Mudstars. These were $600 shipped.

I dont have a lift, or torsion bar cranked or anything. The stock tires were just ridiculously small, pic related. All I had to do to fit them was trim a little plastic and zip tie back a parking brake cable.

If solid axles are so good why does the Humvee, a vehicle praised as the Jesus of off road capability have an independent suspension?

As far as flex, if thewheelsarticulate independently why would you need as much flex? Look at these crazy photos of trucks on the side of the hills. Which is more stable, a Jeep approaching the limits of its center of gravity or the one actually leaning into the hill? An independent suspensionrequires a completely different way of thinking. Who needs big old D60 axles if you are flexing at eachwheel? Like the HUMVEE you can tuck your differentials up high in the central tunnel.

Look, this subject could be shitposted to death with valid arguments from both sides, but at the end of the day all of us still get lumped in with the fucking lifted bro trucks that never see anything but pavement because "muh weels'll get durty" regardless of the suspension preference. Instead, can we focus our hate on pic related and not on each other? If not, I'd settle for the Sierra club like >>16207889 pointed out.

Pls nerd out. I'm going to my mechanic tomorrow and need a good set below the $300 he "normally gives to his clients". After looking at HIDs on Amazon and whatever, they're looking like a good price right now. I also have done a bit of electrical engineering so can keep up with nerd lingo.

And damn. That's NO lift!? There has to be some sort of small mix or the (2008??) Sierra must've looked quite weird with those small tyres.
To be fair, all modern trucks with their large, wave box design look weird as fucking with those stock tyres. They took the standard Ranger tyres and literally put them on truccs 33% the size of the ranger body. I'm glad you got yourself some Radials.

Also, why DID you get radials? Good price or are they actually good mudders?

>>16211263
This is actually a very good question and I will float some possible answers:
1. combat vehicle so bullets/rockets taking out one tyre will allow it to spin at its own rate allowing maximum spin to get away before it actually breaks down (if locked, then the other wheel would be fucked and completely not drivable).
2. A war vehicle and not built for much climbing as they can legitimately "go around big rock". They also need to be somewhat optimised for speed.
3. Contracts.
And the other points you pointed out in the second paragraph.

But mostly this:
>instead pls

>can we not focus our hate on each other, ugu
YES WE CAN! <33

So I looked it up for a minute since I was curious on this answer. And I would say my 1st point is more or so valid. Humvees' axels are just giant fucking pieces of steel supporting more steel with rubber around it. Meant to be as rugged as hell, hit as many rocks as possible, and all be really quick whilst doing it.

It's also an incredibly simple design without any of the complexities needed for a solid axle system supported by a small, long (And therefore less durable) metal pipe.

Occam's razor, j'suppose.

I believe it. In fact, I'd be surprised if the new one outpreformed the old XJs. the cherokee is now an SUV and no one buys it with the intention of offroading a fuckin $50 000 mom car. they realise that so they have the rubicon or unlimited whatever instead. Also, the modern Chebby Colorados are outperformed by the last generation S10s (colorado, dakota?, canyon prior to 2010).
My 2wd Colorado was what I learned to offroad on and 2wd meant I couldn't get stuck or it'd be a call to my friends or CAA.

I'm not surprised, shocked, or even angre. Just a little

Hey, I'm just speaking in off-road terms.
If you wanna get it, it's not a bad SUV and can double as a light off road camping rig.
>>
>>16211754
I won't get one, I can't justify 30k for a car, at that price I would just build an LS wagoneer with air cont.

I don't believe at all that an s10 is better than any Colorado/canyon off road even the zr2 version of the s10 blazer.

Hey there, little Kota!

>>16212611
I was saying the last generation S10 IS the Colorado / Canyon because, well, they pretty much are. I have no idea why they decided to change it to Canyon / Colorado after 2004 or whatever. They're still S10s.

Ahh ok I see.

Anyways just got home from picking up a 5.3 vortec and while I was there turns out they also had a clean solid rust free k10 short bed truck for sale. Easily better than the k10 long bed I was gonna buy. He said he's gonna get back to me on it later today with all the info on it. Chances are I'll be buying it real soon

heres a picture when I had white walls out originally. I thought it looked cool, but when I put new tires on I went black out.
>>
>>16215772
You mean the white lettering right? Lettering is good to leave out IMO but full actual white wall on a truck looks disgusting.
So lettering ues white wall no

a really beat 318. I thought it would of died two years ago. But it just keeps on tickin. Ive been running 15w40 oil in it for a year now with no issues. 5w30 was getting too thin and after a big mountain climb or towing, oil pressure would drop too low at idle. Never sounds knocky. When it does go Im thinking about swaping a 5.9L magnum in :) same wire harness haha. No replacement for displacement. Ive all ready rebuilt the transmission and rear diff. Rear diff has a LSD now lol. We reached image limit in this thread :(
>>
>>16215983
I overhauled it and made my 5.9L a 6.0 lol
I believe it's almost the same or is the same 5.9L engine. My net step is a lift desu. 4 -6 with 35s for show. Want a cage in the back too. I use 15w-40 also. So so so much better.
