Anyone know if this is actually good and not full of memes?

I've had a GW1-C for 8 months now, for $50 and it's been great. Beware of knockoffs for absurdly cheap prices. Also had an SD card fail but that was not the fault of the camera. Check it every once in a while, you should be able to see the screen's reflection in a window if it's facing glass, and look for the blinking red dot.

Would it be worth to spend another 50 for the rear camera?

It's a really hard sell for scam artists when the front of their car is ruined, that you were the one at fault, especially if it's at any kind of speed over the max reverse speed. If you're that paranoid, you can go for it, but I've never heard of any case where someone was rear ended and then either insurance company tried to deny a claim
