I haven't trusted Yamaha after my 125 came out of the factory with the rear wheel bolt retaining clips not done up. The result was a bolt working loose and 'fortunately' causing the wheel to lock while I was walking it into a parking space instead of a few minutes earlier.

i have to admit, the pre owner abused it a lot, im sure.
when i got it i had to:

>have the camshaft reworked
>new rockers
>renew most seals
>put in a new camchain
and a few other small things.

also, the XL600 is really, really prone to overheat. that kills the seals etc, i had to install an aftermarket oilcooler. and now its leaking from the valvecover again, for literally no reason at all. i still love it, its an amazing bike, and well lemme put it like that: it WILL run most of the time, but it happens a lot that thinks break that worsen your riding experience. it will still run though.

damn, desu even if i never did anything on it im sure it would still run. but it was terrible at some points, listen to this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=APf6Oo0iXmE that was the fucked chamshaft, pic related

on the trip: one of the valve clearance screws got lose and the valve was kept open all the time. we found shelter and i fixed it, i had all the tools with me. not really the fault of the bike, maybe i didnt tighten it enough.
>>
>>16193829
>And its a persons job to install it.
A person who was hired and trained by?
>As well as your job to inspect a brand new bike before riding.
I'm not a Yamaha technician, unless they include a technical manual I have no way of knowing that what looks like a shim actually stops the bolts working loose.

I guess I'll stick with Hondas, I've owned 3 and never encountered a component installed incorrectly. If I buy any more Yamahas I'd probably have to strip it down to the individual engine components, since it's my responsibility to check every bolt is installed and torqued correctly and some lazy fuck at Yamaha might have failed to put a bearing in the engine.
>>
>>16193869

Suzuki's dynasty actually extends far deeper than most people will ever know. I am a mechanic at a local motorcycle dealership so valve inspections are a frequent part of my job. Those gixxer engines are ALWAYS in fucking spec. You wouldn't believe the piles of shit that have been brought to me with 30k+ miles and the valve clearances are dead center. Yamaha is good too but not as good as Suzuki. Kawasaki is next and Honda is actually the worst (not even trying to play into the meme here, their valves are super soft).

None of those things affect plating and you know this. Emissions cert and lighting affect plating, that is all, and ways around the obstacles exist and are easy.

Fuel is nearly free so mileage is irrelevant. You can always carry more fuel. You can change your oil on the road if want. Also not difficult. Dump the waste on your camp fire and burn the plastic bottle too.

Nah up until a few years ago they weren't technically street legal but the manufacturer certificate of origin provided with the bike didn't say OFF ROAD ONLY (unlike japanese bikes) all over it so you could easily take it to the dmv and get a street title for it. In 2007 they changed their naming system in the US so the EXCs were the ones offered in street legal trim and the XC/XC-W were only available as off-road-only bikes.

>>16194799
Some probably will but otherwise it's really nice to have street legality for your enduros so you can take roads between riding spots and such legally.

You should only buy for how YOU intend to ride. /dbt/ is shitpost central and that is all. Motorcyclists are mostly elitist dicks so you may as well NOT care who you annoy. That's why riding is now divided into so many niche groups.

There is no perfect motorcycle. I suggest going for common and reliable, because that means easy parts access, good aftermarket support, and less walking. GS 500s are solid and good first bikes.

No matter what you buy, someone with more money will have something quicker, faster and prettier. If you are not actually dealing with that person that's also fucking irrelevant.

15-30 min co.ute time daily
Top speed of 50 mph (65-70 would be nice)
Offroading on power lines tight trails and sand pits as well as on road shenanigans
E start would be nice but not a necessity I'm used to kicl starting

A klx300 would be a pretty good match
Dr350 would be nearly perfect
Maybe a wr426 (there's one on sale for cheap)
Or maybe a wr250(also for sale near me but fucking sueprmoto)

Posted earlier today

Possibly purchasing 2017 SV650 tomorrow, going to the dealership for my second visit.

Tips for getting the lowest price? I don't need dealer financing so they can't get me there.

Figure I'll start talking about throwing in a helmet or something first and then after a little while just ask what the best they'll do is or tell them I'll take their offer if they make it $7k out the door.

What's /dbt/'s experience with
>buying new
?

Not my first bike, btw, and don't have to leave tomorrow on a bike but I fully intend to if they meet me on a deal.

Yeah but the others don't cost $10k+

For that price the bike should be pretty well set up, not sprung for a 115lb rider and less than a gallon of gas

>>16195423
But if you have to make the same mods to the $10k+ bike, why not start cheaper?

DRZ400S MSRP is $6500
690 Enduro is $10500
That's $4k in mods which means you could have the suspension professionally overhauled and do a Renazco seat and still have plenty left over for a big bore and supporting mods

I don't even like the DR-Z but come on, a $10k dirt bike should be pretty well set up from the factory
>>
>>16195423
It's really not. Even a used XR650R and enough mods to make it competitive will approach $10k and still make 15hp less with no E start

2009+ KLR650 vs DR650 for 75% commuter, 25% light trails/exploring the desert of Arizona.

Commute will be mostly city streets. Occasionally 200mi round trip highway to visit family.
Off-road will be mostly light double track trails and occasionally going places I'm not supposed to be, and then also graded dirt roads.

Daily a Pickup right now, and have a 2stroke enduro for anything more aggressive off-road wise.

Have a bike for your time
>>
>>16195451
The DR-Z is pretty lame from the factory. I've never heard anyone say the 690 really needs suspension or engine work to get it to perform well. I get the impression that it is pretty well suspended from the factory. Of course it could benefit from springing the bike to the rider but that could be said for every bike. One cannot be perfect for all.
The seat does look like hard plastic tho so I'm sure it would be worth the couple hundo to upgrade that.

Anyway the 690 stock will be better suspended than the DR-Z, have twice the power, EFI, and have a better gear spread.

A big bore DR-Z is still only like 45hp lol.
>>
>>16195397
Nice.

On a short technical track it should be good.

You'll definitely be slow on a longer tracks though.
>>
>>16195497

I paid $3400 for my XR. 701 Enduro is $11200. Tell me you legitimately think that with the leftover $7800 I would not be able to "compete" with the 701

Especially since the 701E is worse than the XR is the one big area people complain about that can't really be fixed. Weight.
>>
>>16195531
You'd need that entire budget to make your XR make 76hp for more than 5k miles

Stats are fun but the motorcycling population is so diverse that overall stats may be invalid for some experience levels. Not all riders are clones.
>>
>>16195077
All motorcycles with vintage frame geometry were uncomfortable. It wasn't a concern. Gel seat inserts are a thing if you own one, and auto reupholsterers often make better and less expensive seats than OEM or aftermarket because better vinyl. You can source gel inserts online.

>>can't bumpstart an EFI bike

Why u let battery turn to shit? If battery is that dead I pull them to charge then troubleshoot problem. Bad battery can expensively take out charging system. (BTW never jumpstart from a running auto as babby bike regulator will attempt to regulate auto alternator with potential crispy results.)

>>not sure if it's better than a carbed bike desu

EFI doesn't protect you from bad fuel and sitting up over winter etc, so be nice to your machine no matter what you run. Most fuel system problems are due to owner neglect.
>>
>>16195325
>is it reasonable to say stator failure in EFI bike = call the tow truck?

Stator failure is tow territory for most mortals. Unless you have bike with a separate magneto you need charging system even on carbed bikes.

If you really, really have to get home you can swap in a good battery or connect another power source like a jump start pack. In the bad old days of British bikes, choppers, and constant electrical death it would not be unusual for someone to balance a car battery on their lap and limp home slowly. I've bought a fresh battery on the road to limp home.
