Obtaining a CDL: How does one do?

Where: Community College, Vocation Specific School (i.e. Trucker School)

How: Savings motherfucker, or financing - some schools finance, there's financial aid if you can go to a comm. college, banks hand out loans for CDL training all the time because lots of companies will pay it for you once you're hired.

New loancuck o/o from last thread here. Got to the albany dmv 15 minutes before it closed on friday, by some miracle I got it registered. Got to the truck, and 10 miles after pulled out of the lot one of the shiny not-chrome hubcaps flies off and ping-pongs between 3 cars. Lost a second one at some point but nobody flagged me down so i guess its on the side of the road somewhere
>>
>>16192930
i like how they always wait for any maintenance to be started before giving you loads
my favorite was getting call as i get into the yard
>gordo can you deliber this to Oregon is hot ld

Uh, i just told you im in the shop for the oil change that's almost 8k overdue

>but iz hot ld,do change later

Trucks already in line, plus you pulled this on me already in cali and had me sit for a week.

>but,but iz hot ld..

hung up and started chatting with a driver who has been available for the last 3 days and has to go to Oregon for home time. so i told him of it and he said they wouldn't give it to him but wouldn't say why. also the "hot load" line always cracks me up you don't pay me anything more for hot loads, telling me just ensures i know You are getting paid more.

I do store shelf stocking, I unload general goods and move them to the shelf 4 days a week for 9.50 an hour.

> The driver in the fatal school bus crash near Chattanooga, Tennessee, was traveling "well above the posted speed limit of 30 mph" when he lost control of the bus Monday, swerving off the roadway, according to an arrest affidavit.

> Driver Johnthony Walker "lost control of the bus and swerved off of the roadway to the right, striking an elevated driveway and mailbox, swerved to the left and began to overturn, striking a telephone pole and a tree," the affidavit says.

> At least five children were killed in the crash, school officials said.

Covers your hotel stay for orientation I believe.

They don't need to do it though. Prime gets a huge tax break for every person that sets foot on that dormitory (because that's what it is, a dorm) and that tax break is well over the cost of bringing that employee in and housing them for a few days.

They get the break even if the new hire fails a drug test or is on prescription meds that their recruiter said were okay to drive on but they get to their physical and are told to go home. I've seen it happen several times over 1/3 of all the people they bring in go home in the same week and Robert Low still gets a tax break for ALL of them.

To answer your question, it's not a bad outfit and their training program is okay. I don't think there's a way around that. If you get here in the next week come find me I'm in between trucks.

You gotta ask around too. Most drivers like us work on salary plus commission. But the Coke plant nearby switched to straight hourly (like $22/hr) about 2 years ago. Lots of drivers loved it at first, but now word on the street is they barely get any OT. If they worked 35hrs by Wed, they will give em a short day Thurs and tell them to stay home Friday.

>If they worked 35hrs by Wed, they will give em a short day Thurs and tell them to stay home Friday.
Ah, 'flexible working'.

That's working out fairly well for me; I can go home when the job's done, or at 2PM; whichever is sooner.
Previously, my overtime rate kicked in at the 37.5 hours/week point, but negotiations with the union meant I lost my overtime rate and any increased pay on saturdays for a higher hourly rate.
Considering I work mon-fri and work 30-40 hours a week 90% of the year, I got a good deal there.

I can't afford CDL school.

How do I get a job as a parcel/courier driver?

Do I just wait until UPS or FedEx hires seasonal drivers and hope they hire me then keep me after?

I really hate being stuck inside a building for long hours. I'm an /out/ guy. I was a driver helper for a water company over the Summer delivering those water jugs to offices and stuff and I loved it. We listened to music, talked about foot ball, stopped at Food Lion for lunch, was smoking while working, on our phones. It didn't even feel like a job. I asked about driving for them when the temp project was over but they require CDL I'm assuming because of the weight of all the water puts it over legal limits.

Is there anything else I can do? These seasonal driver positions at UPS and FedEX say they require a year of driving experience. Could I do pizza delivery or newspaper or something?

Pepsi. Do the drivers that drive box trucks delivering to stores require CDL? I had an opportunity to be a box truck driver for Coca-Cola through a temp agency but I told the truth saying I had no experience driving box trucks. I should have lied.

>>

You could start working in the warehouse and constantly ask for driver position openings.

Go for a commission based job rather than hourly. If you're hourly, enjoy working 12+ hour shifts 5 days a week and be fired for being even 5 minutes off schedule. Commission based, you basically have your route and you get it done on your own schedule. If you want to take 12 hours wasting time, then you aren't getting paid extra. Best to get it done ASAP. Might not be as great as hourly because of all the over time pay, but you have more freedom. I know a guy that makes ~$45K doing local delivery. Usually leaves for work around 5:30-6:00 int he morning. Starts his delivery around 7:00AM and is done by noon or a litter later if he's running extra deliveries for somebody who called out. He enjoys his work/life balance and I'm sure his family does too. His wife is a nurse, so combined they do pretty well with 2 kids.

Bus drivers are in huge demand all over the country. I drive for a large bus company and do shuttles for a local community college during the week. On weekends I drive charter trips (pub crawls, weddings, football games, etc).

I get anywhere from $13.55/hr to $17/hr (my company has like 5 or 6 different pay rates for different kinds of work). Not bad for work where you literally just hold a steering wheel.

I get around 50-70 hours a week, no OT tho.

>>16205416
Sounds about right. When you become an adult, you often have to face the consequences for your past choices. Just like pumpbruh will soon find out.

Just keep applying anyway, somebody will give you a shot. But the main issue is the insurance companies care about your record more than the truckin company and it costs them money.

Git gud at double clutching first, then worry about floating later, that way you have a good base since floating gears smoothly is a skill that takes a lot of practice.

Personally, I often float up in gears, and double clutch on the way down, especially when coming to a stop, but you'll figure out what works for you and the truck you're in.

Highly unlikely for several reasons.

Extreme shortage of drivers means that oftentimes contractors are forced to hire less-than-ideal applicants. I see this all the time, we hire complete morons that shouldn't be driving anything and 2 days out of training they're given the keys to a brand new $100K Bluebird school bus and entrusted with the safety of 60 kids.

The school bus contract business is very cuttthroat with razor thin profit margins. The trend is going towards mega companies that have dozens of terminals scattered across entire regions. Quality suffers when they're always looking for ways to cut costs.
