Does horsepower affect a different characteristic of the car than torque? (for example, top speed and acceleration respectively?)

Also, how does a car with shitty torque but relatively high HP (RX8 for example) perform compared to a car with shitty HP and high torque?

HP is simply how much work is done over time, when used in comparison to the base torque number it's derived from it gives you an idea of where the engine makes its power.

It generally does not affect top speed though as that has more to do with gearing and aerodynamics

Typically high torque low HP engines are found in towing and hauling applications, where stopping and starting are concerns and high HP low torque are used in racing applications where you stay in the power band as much as possible.

Torque is literally a twisting force, aka the force that turns the wheels, while horsepower is a measurement of how much work is being done to produce that torque.

Cars with high torque and low HP do drive differently from vehicles with low torque and high horsepower.
A great example would be a third gen Chevrolet Camaro Z28 vs say an Acura Integra GSR.
The Camaro will pin you to the seat on initial take off but isn't very fast.
Meanwhile, the Integra is slow to take off, doesn't push you back but is decently quick once it hits the powerband.

Vehicles with high HP and low torque are almost exclusively high revving bastards, while the inverse is generally true as well.

The most basic explanation is HP can be your top speed whitest torque is how fast you get there.

Thanks m8s

HP is how hard you hit the wall, Torque is what really gets you there though.

Also, for the low HP, high TQ, think of diesel Semi. Those trucks can tow ALOT, thanks to high TQ, but low HP means that doesn't translate to top speed. They kinda peter out. Hence the sub 4K RPM operating range and, the like 16 speed gearboxes.

Incorrect.

Torque is like Yamcha and horsepower is like Kuririn.

you should be fucking retarted if you think 'incorrect' is an argument

I mean, isn't torque simply the force of one rotation, and horsepower the total output of power done over all rotations?

So, a car with more horsepower but less torque will be quicker and have a higher top speed, but a car with more torque and less horsepower will be able to push more weight in one rotation but will have a lower top speed?
