Cheap Luxury Cars General

Want to get an 2011 ES 350 with <70,000 miles for about 13.5k

Good Idea, or do they have tons of issues?
>>
>>16179232
That model has sad levels of understeer and poor rolling acceleration given its standstill performance. I went elsewhere
>>
>>16179270
Well I can get a brand new 2016 Chevy Cruze for the same price.
Where elsewhere did you go?
>>
>>16179290
I actually ended up torn between a 2015 Toyota avalon and a 2015 Chevy impala. The Avalon was more numb in the steering feel dept compared to the 350 but it's lift off turning was much closer to neutral vs the 350's moderate (surprising given pedigree) understeer.

Ultimately I'd tell you go 2012 if you wanted to get an Es 350. The suspension improvementsystem to the platform were very evident in the Avalon. I did not try a 2012 es350 but my understanding is that the platform is a smidge shorter but otherwise an Avalon and that was a notable improvement for my driving taste despite the aforementioned. I hope this helps but I STRONGLY suggest seat time and make your own call.

Ultimately, I ended up with the Impala for a number of reasons but I'd have been happy with either
>>
>>16179232
Get an LS430 instead
>>
>>16179427
Buying a new car, probably from the dealer too.

>>16179403
Thanks for the information.

How is the Impala in terms of steering?
The 2016 Cruze had some understeering and a lot of tolerance in the steering before the wheels budged, and in general felt numb/sluggish.

I drive an '07. It's been super reliable, main known issue on the earlier ones (07, maybe 08) is the water pump. Had mine replaced AFTER warranty, Lexus paid for it anyway as a favor (Lexus has legendary customer service), saved me like $1500.

Anyway it's a perfect luxe DD, grand tourer cruiser type car. I togue it with the local kids but it is not made for that.

Long trips it's amazing.

Yeah ABS isn't gonna help there. You need to be smoother on the brakes and keep more distance between you and the car ahead of you, also engine braking helps

My cheap Lexus: '96 ES300, bought with 203k miles for $1600 from a guy who owned it since '98 and took great care of it. Have put on new brakes all around and new rear swaybar bushings. that was the day I bought it, 203k miles. I've probably put on about 1500 or so since then.

I'm amazed by how nice the interior has held up, the engine is glass smooth and transmission shifts better than a lot of new cars I've driven. The only "issue" is a clunk shifting from park to reverse and a bit of a 'rocking' when getting on the gas and letting off, I suspect a tired rear motor mount. Suspension amazingly enough is all original. Struts, ball joints, control arms, everything except the $30 sway bar bushings that I replaced to solve a clunk out back. To be frank the car could use some fresh struts to deal with expansion joints at high speed a bit smoother, but they're not wobbly or blown out at all.

Really impressed both by how well these are made, and how well the PO kept it up. This guy took it to the Toyota dealer for oil changes at 5k on the nose right up until the end, got the transmission serviced at regular intervals, etc.

20k CAD will get you into an LS460 with 150,000 miles on it.

my LS430 was $10,600.

the whole point of buying an LS430 is reliability and ease of maintenance. the LS460 isn't unreliable, but it doesn't have the UZ that everyone's familiar with and it has an 8 speed transmission--good luck with that.

find me an LS430 for $10k with less than 100k on it.

i didn't say the LS460 was unreliable, it just isn't going to have the legendary reliability that the LS430 does. the UZ is famously reliable, very easy to work on, and parts are very cheap.

you can't say the same for the LS460, which used a new engine/transmission.

the LS430 is a smart buy because of those factors.
>>
>>16189725
>but it doesn't have the UZ that everyone's familiar with and it has an 8 speed transmission--good luck with that
Totally not calling it unreliable guise!

And how can you say the LS460 won't be as reliable? The engine and transmission aren't even new anymore, they're like 10 years old. There hasn't been any major problems with Toyota's UR engines
