I talked to a person who was in the recording in Stuttgart and he said that TGT is pretty much like the old Top Gear but with much more money thrown at it.
And there are no laughtracks it was actually funny.

I'm not sure how I feel about it.

It was better than the worst Top Gear eps of the past 5 years, but no where near the best ones.

Some of the editing was REALLY bad. Just film grain, noise, and saturation annoyingness.
The cameras they used, while clear, ended up with a lot of washing out from bright parts, like the windows out their tent, and over saturation that might have been poor editing.

It's not bad, but not as good as I hoped and I didn't really have super high expectations or anything.
>>
>>16179234
I'm guessing it's going to get better as the series goes on, and they learn what works and what doesn't.
>>
>>16179518

>what works and what doesn't.

After 23 seasons of Top Gear i'd have thought they'd have a pretty good grasp of that.

Well, they Did have to throw together a completely new film crew In about 6 hours, and IMMEDIATELY start filming everything.
Also new producers and crew (or is Andy there? To lazy to check) and editors and whatnot.

So YES. It will not be the same as top gear, even with the same stars. But YES, it will get better.

I just liked the CONSTANT references and jabs towards the BBC, and nu- top gear

Amazon hired them like a year ago. And now they are set to release 12 episodes over the next 4 months. Most of which, has already been filmed.

I have a general idea of what it takes to film such a thing, and they will have been working constantly, back to back, very focused and scheduled, just to make it this launch.

The needs of the BBC versus the needs of Amazon.com are different. Those needs can dictate certain content changes later on. But they know they have to make it similar enough to attract the audience and then hold them in the first few episodes at least. I'm curious as to if they will have any sort of cross-services promotion or product shilling on Amazon's behalf.
>>
I just got around to watching it. I thought it was fairly well produced all in all. Didn't care for the long ass Forza looking cuts, but everything else was real alright. I'm looking forward to following the rest of the season.

Will repost what I wrote in the other thread didn't realise there was an older one.

If new Top gear didn't have Chris Evans there wouldn't be much in it actually imo. I had to skip the air force and celebrity death segments entirely they were so cringily unfunny. Everything in it felt like they were trying too hard, hopefully they settle into a more natural rhythm but for now I'm pretty disappointed.

Cinematography was amazing as ever though and the intro was 10/10.
>>
>>16177874
Good old TG or bad (last ~3 seasons) old TG?
>>
>>16180941
i dunno, there were some shit moments but the celebrety death was pretty funny.

i think the new test track is shit though.

Also; if the new topgear featured more chris harris it'd probably be alot closer. i like him a lot (despite his history)

I'm surprised they didn't tinker with results of the big 3. McLaren P1 always won in british journalists tests and 918 always won in independent tests. But I think that Ferrari cheated though. Maybe they upped the boost or something. Out of the 3 I'm pretty sure it's the slowest one and nowhere near as close to 918.

All in all it definitely has some of the atmosphere of the old show. Maybe the fracas was for the better, as in the last few years Top Gear felt pretty stale.
>>
I miss the challenges, but I'll take it from the various clips and the coming-up montage we'll get that. It looked beautiful and I'm sure they'll get more into the swing of things as it goes along. I'm satisfied.
>>
Unironically think the next series of Top Gear will be better than this. Reminded me of the experience I usually get watching a Disney blockbuster actually, it just seems to have no soul anymore. I mean it was impressive but with every attempted joke it felt more and more like a script designed around a focus group they had with Top Gear fans to see what they might want.

I just want a good car show, with passion for the cars and some humour, not this soulless production, and I really hope Leblanc and Harris can finally deliver that without Evans shitting all over it.

I liked it. Some of the studio bits felt a bit forced but they did from time to time in Top Gear as well. It looked amazing and I liked Clarkson's film in the M2 a lot.

I can't wait for when they start doing fun things in shitboxes.

Chris Harris is british, don't be naive. He would let McLaren do anything with the car.

>>16180945
Celebrity death was funny, and a funny way of them acknowledging the least popular part of the show.

Air force bit might be funny to communists.. it is an international show after all.

Awfully scripted jokes and game CGI tier shots of the cars, Ben Collins doesn't do the laps afterall, ages of screentime wasted on the bad kind of cringeworthy British humour. It really felt like Clarkson, Hammond and May had absolutely zero say in what they were to say.

It looked like it and would've been a nice touch, given that he was shitting on Top Gear and the BBC before it was cool. That is how it works when you shoot inside and outside its a fucking desert with bright sunlight.

Unless they brought fuck huge 10,000w+ lights and lit the entire inside as bright as the sun, you are going to have inconsistent backgrounds.

The editing is just like they used to do on the old TG, they picked a certain style and ran with it.

Although since they used that one song from sicario I immediately liked it all.
>>
>>16181210
Agreed, it felt more like a BBC show than their BBC show. Crazy.
>>
felt like seeing old friends again. very good.
>>
>>16177836
I think the episodes will get better. A lot of the show was setting up the format.

They had to explain that they weren't going to have celebrities, the Jeremy Renner thing was pretty funny, didn't think they needed anymore than that

They needed to explain the track and all of it's turns.

I do wish they would've completely dumped the studio thing, and just done long films
>>
>>16180820
I was really suprised by that. I feel like the driver fucked something up at some point on the track. The speeds that they had over the rest of the course were suggesting that the P1 was going to smash the other two
>>
>>16181042
I fucking hated the celebrity part. I would just get up and do something else when that came on

ATG is shit though, because of the people, not the format.

I want to see them driving through cool places, destroying their cars, pulling pranks, and being friends.

>The cameras they used.... washing out from bright parts, like the windows out their tent
You must be completely fucking retarded if you think it's possible to shoot that situation without either underexposing the SUBJECT MATTER (people) or overexposing the view out of the window. What do you propose they do? Make the window out of a giant -3 ND filter for the desert so its exposure matches the crowd? Nobody really cared about that, so they didn't bother, it was a backdrop and didn't need to be clearly detailed and perfectly exposed.

But you obviously know nothing about photography or videography.

it was fun, and I'm glad they are ditching the celebrities. While it was neat on Top gear, it WAS the slowest part of the show, and it tended to drag on a bit, although i did enjoy having a celebrity talk with Clarkson about their car history, THAT was nice.

But for the new show, ditching it was for the best. it's got the extravagant filmed segments, the laps around a track, and a brief news segment. it's perfect. I look forward to seeing what they do next.

I was expecting to be disappointed. I expected divine justice to smite on that asshole Clarkson for having ruined Top Gear in the first place. I thought it was gonna be a cheap re-hash of everything we knew and loved about Top Gear...

And, fuck me sideways, I was wrong.

The intro did for me what the ending of F&F7 did to all the stancefags and dudebros that listen to Wiz Khalifa. It almost got me teared up seeing that massive celebration of automotive pleasure, all those cars, the music, the energy pulsing in the environment, a flaming caravan and the trio rolling in three Mustangs. Quite good.

Bantz were good although sometimes they seemed scripted to the point of being a bit cringeworthy. The bit on the RAF was fucking hillarious even though it was obviously scripted, 'murrican Stig was fun because 'murrican stereotypes always are. The hypercar segment was slightly underwhelming considering everything we hoped for such a duel, but I appreciated the direct reference at Ferrari being assholes to anyone who doesn't wanna brown-nose them. Have you ever tried brown-nosing a horse? It's not fun, let me tell you that. Go ask Chris Harris if you don't believe me.

Anyways, the show seems to be on for a good start. Three years is a lot of time, a lot of things can go right during that time...or brutally, awfully wrong. The montage showed some pretty awesome stuff but, who knows, perhaps Clarksy will punch someone for not liking the way he assembled the tent and we'll be back at square one, dreaming of a billion-dolar version of Top Gear with James May, Sabine Schmitz and Vicki Butler Henderson called "Menage a Gear".

BTW: If anyone from Amazon is watching this, remember the role piracy had in popularizing Top Gear. So fuck you if you try and take my torrents away.
>>
>>16183078
I hope you realize that not every track segment is going to be The American. (at least I dont think so) more than likely they will have region specific race drivers depending on where they visit.

I hope so. I'll keep giving it a shot.

But if this was a new series and Top Gear didn't exist, I'd just be "meh" and drop it without giving it a second chance.

The new track sucks. The camera following the track sucks. Did they have legal issues over putting a camera in set spots and saying "across the line" or something...? Because that was the best thing about the laps, how consistent and comparable they were, and the camera shack when it zips by that kink in the straight on the old track.

They also didn't really talk about car news... instead they had a segment about the silly ways American calls things, or something.

If they go really all fucking out on the challenges and building dumb shit, though, it could redeem all the faults.

Not quite right. The large dynamic range of these cameras sort of is being shown down stream because all of these shots are processed so they actually are showing every bit of dynamic range possible.

They aren't tone mapping heavily enough to show it all on streaming video, you would be able to tell if they were by the posterization

Why do you think that? The cameras they use shoot RAW and have a lot of information going through the sensor. Why do you assume there would be posterization?
>>
>>16184419
>Why do you assume there would be posterization?
Because there would be, it's just a fact. They may be RECORDING in raw, but you are not streaming that raw data to your computer. What they can see in their editing suite is not what you're going to see in your poncy 1080p streaming video, you have FAR less dynamic range and detail capacity. The overexposed window scene you are seeing is an unavoidable fact of the limitations of the media. You simply cannot overcome it, the scene has too much contrast for it to be conveyed as the eye would see it on streaming video.
>>
I don't know about TGT but old TG used different cameras in the studio than elsewhere and it was even 60 fps outside and 30 inside (or 24 I forget).
>>
>>16184419
To further expand on my post >>16184427
They have the option to tone-map in editing and compress the dynamic range, this would lead to posterization, which looks unnatural. The choice they had was
A. Lose detail on the window scene to keep detail on the presenters and audience
B. Compress and get an unnatural posterized look with more detail in the window scene
Which makes more sense? Screwing everything up for BACKGROUND detail? Or losing background detail and keeping what matters (the presenters) looking right?

You simply cannot get the kind of dynamic range out of streaming video that you can out of the camera in RAW. Streaming that episode in RAW would use tens of gigabytes, and you wouldn't have the bandwidth to do anything other than buffer it fully then watch it.

I don't really understand what you're talking about. I'm a photographer, and I constantly use cameras that have the same dynamic range as cinema cameras, I've never experienced posterizing. All that happens in post is that it takes the highlights and essentially brings them down theres no reason that causes posterizing.

They can make the video show all the details, just look at the movie "The Revenant" that was shot 90% with no lighting at all, but you can still watch it on your tv and see the whole tonal range of the movie.

I feel it'll improve. But I didn't and don't care for the scripted nature; especially the Airforce studio segment. The execution of the Trinity segment was a problem too. They went from racing to testing electric power to then the two randomly driving without may.
They should've done what they used to; was test all three at once towards the end of their segment...before they drove off. It felt like they did that just to keep people viewing...as it was at the end of the programme.
Anyway; enjoyable to watch but those certain aspects spoilt it. Like finding mold in your toast after you've had a bite.

Yeah that was kind of pointless and not really funny.
Let's be honest the best moments of old top gear weren't about cars. They were about them struggling in a jungle in old shitboxes or building a vehicle and testing it in public (P40, Hovervan etc) or stupid challenges. They need to do more stuff like that and I think they will. The supercar segment was just obligatory for their first episode.
>>
Also I think they could improve on the test track shots. I felt like they were always too close to the car. I'm also sure people would pay to watch these tests in person but I guess that's not possible at the new track.

You have no idea what you're talking about.
>>
>>16186249
You can say that but it doesn't change the fact that I know what I'm talking about and you're wrong.

Simply put, there was no practical way to (because of limitations of the streaming format) and no real reason to make the view out of the window darker and more detailed. Nobody really cares about it except for one autist in this thread so they weren't going to waste time rotoscoping it or ruin the rest of the scene by tone mapping it.

Protip: max dynamic range (RAW files) is IMPOSSIBLE to convey in lossy compressed formats (such as streaming video containers), so it must be tone mapped.

kek they don't know but they respond all smug and aggressively anyway.

An HDR camera gives you more bits per channel in editing down to 8bpc without losing detail, and to capture a wider range without it being washed up in the highs and lows, you retards.
>>
>>16184457
Which is exactly why you use an HDR camera. So you can record the whole range and then fix it in editing when dropping down to 8bpc, instead of choosing between two different subpar options for the scene when recording.

Or not exactly. You're not going to get posterization but you do lose color accuracy.

Either way, you want as much data as you can have to use in editing to get the ideal picture.
>>
So what's your guys' opinion on the new Stig?
I feel like the guy's punchlines/gimmick will get old pretty quickly
And also found it odd they got a NASCAR driver of all people.
Like, there's plenty of American drivers to choose from that has road experience.
>>
>>16186617
>I feel like the guy's punchlines/gimmick will get old pretty quickly
it already did and I hope he wont be the stig forever or at least stop being such a meme. I hope they don't take the laptimes from the runs where they show him shitposting IRL too, I want these laptimes to be serious otherwise they might aswell drop them.
>>

You're a complete moron, and he's completely correct. Cinematic and television cameras have more dynamic range than you can use in a compressed digital medium without tone mapping. You cannot express that kind of dynamic range in compressed shitquality digital video like HD streaming. Oh, you thought your HD streaming video was high quality? Sorry cupcake, it's not. People don't have the bandwidth to support streaming true high quality video, where each frame is several raw megabytes, and they don't have the trained eye necessary to know the difference between it and their netflix/amazon/hulu streaming either.

Dynamic range is something that gets lost in creating content. It starts out pretty good with the camera that's worth tens of thousands of dollars shooting, it has something like 12-15 stops of dynamic ratio. Then they edit it down to a master, and not much is lost there if anything. Then they use the master to make a compressed streamable piece of content, and a shitton gets lost. Detail gets lost in compression, so does dynamic range. Now if you edit specifically for the streamed content, you will be able to compensate for this loss of dynamic range by finding a happy medium between dynamic range and unnatural look with tone mapping, but it's not worth the unnatural look for something as inconsequential as a situational background scene. It can also be a stylistic choice to leave the desert overexposed, because the desert is fucking bright and the overexposure conveys that.

Amazon apologists, kek. You're a conspiracy nutjob. Anyone who doesn't agree with you must be an apologis or a fanboy
>>
>>16185990
I don't know if it stands for anything, thats just how Ive always seen it spelled

>>16186069
I think you're a little bit confused about dynamic range. It talking about how much range is being captured. You've seen an HDR image before, you don't need an HDR screen to see it. The image is processed into the range that screens are capable of displaying.

Lossy formats are much different than high dynamic range. And I am litterally a professional photographer and a professional videographer, I've been doing that as a living for the last 6 years. I know how raw works, and I know wha dynamic range means.

Can you just show me an example of an HDR image thats posterized because a screen can't display it?

>>16186258
>max dynamic range (RAW files) is IMPOSSIBLE to convey in lossy compressed formats (such as streaming video containers), so it must be tone mapped.

No shit dude. Thats literally what happens when you process the images from raw files, especially a scene like the one they used there, they had to bring the highlights down im sure. But it has NOTHING to do with the streaming format. These are all being sent in like a h265 or h264 format, which might be lossy, but the format has nothing to do with dynamic range

>>16186565
I know what it means, but no camera is just considered HDR. There are cameras that have a wide dynamic range, and there are proceses in which to actually shoot HDR video, but its different than normal video, and has nothing to do with channel bits

>>16186574
The guy that started this argument isn't even talking about HDR, hes saying that when you stream a video that has been processed will be posterized because streaming can't handle the processed images
>>
>>16183228
i'm pretty sure that's because of the mic they used, no the editing
>>
>>16186657
>You cannot express that kind of dynamic range in compressed shitquality digital video like HD streaming

IT DOESN'T. The whites are still white, and the blacks are still blacks. The rest of the tones in between are still there too. It might not be as accurate, but it's still there. If anything, sharpness will suffer the most

You're the conspiracy nutjob

>HD STREAMING IS A RIPOFF! THE HDR ISNT DISPLAYED! YOU'VE ALL BEEN HAD! THE WINDOW SHOULD BE POSTERIZED BECAUSE THE TONE MAPPING CANT STREAM! YOU ALL GOT FOOLED INTO STREAMING A SHOW YOU LIKE AND ITS NOT EVEN HDR! TOUGH LUCK PAL!

I don't know how I feel about it. He was funny for the first episode, but I just dont think he should be on there the rest of the time.

I think he will only be there for one episode. They were in America, so they picked an american driver, next week they'll be in a different country, so they'll have a different driver.
>>
>>16186701
>nigga do you even know what dynamic range is?

Yes. And if they tone map the image, they've brought as much information they could within the black point and white point of the image.
>>
>>16186708
>I think he will only be there for one episode. They were in America, so they picked an american driver, next week they'll be in a different country, so they'll have a different driver.
That wouldn't make any sense because it would completely invalidate the lap tests. Same track different cars different drivers?
>>
>>16186713
>they've brought as much information they could within the black point and white point of the image.
That's called compression. And it's clear you don't know what dynamic range is.

Dynamic range is the amount of variation between the black point and white point. You can have two images with the same black and white point but less detail in between. Read up on it, variation in luminance is the key here, not absolute maximum and absolute minimum.
>>
>>16186730
>That's called compression.

Thats not compression. What the fuck do you think they do when they're processing the raw image? Do you think they're not touching the white and black point of the image?

I know what the fuck im talking about, I do this for a living. I literally have to know this shit to be able to eat.

>Dynamic range is the amount of variation between the black point and white point.

Yes I know, thats why I said they brought as much information between those point as they could. It doesn't make it unstreamable.

Tell you what, just post a screenshot of any streamed media that is posterized because it has a wide dynamic range
>>
>>16186749
>I know what the fuck im talking about, I do this for a living. I literally have to know this shit to be able to eat.
no you don't. many pro togs out there are shit and don't know their F-stop from their F mount.
>>
>>16186749
You complete and utter idiot

It doesn't get posterized because it *has* dynamic range, nobody said that aside from your uninformed ass, it gets posterized because of this thing called tone mapping which is forcing the data a wide dynamic range into a smaller tonal space. It is essentially the same thing as dithering a 32 bit image to a 16 bit color space, some detail is lost. The reason you don't see posterized streamed media is because dynamic range loss is less apparent to the average viewer than the unnatural look of posterizing. Therefore it is only done as a stylistic choice. The anon saying the chioce was between tone mapping with posterization as a result and loss of dynamic range detail is correct.

You're a fucking moron if you think professional = knows what he's talking about. There are plenty of hack job professional photogs like you out there who don't know diffraction limit from fogged elements. Shut up and shuffle off
>>
>>16186666
HDR means it records more than 8bpc (at least 10) as well as supporting a wide color gamut and more contrast.

Simply being wide range does not HDR make.
>>
>>16186666
>but the format has nothing to do with dynamic range
Ok buddy send me a RAW, a h264 still and a jpeg that contain the same dynamic range without tone mapping.
>>
>>16186666
>You've seen an HDR image before, you don't need an HDR screen to see it. The image is processed into the range that screens are capable of displaying.
that's tone mapping
>>
>>16186261
He is rich enough to not care about anything, and his "reputation" is already shit with those who won't like him anyway, and golden with those who will. He really doesn't have any reason to keep trying now that amazon is throwin money at them and that tabloid readers have gotten bored of their magazines trying to shame him (which never works)
>>
>>16186796
>it gets posterized because of this thing called tone mapping which is forcing the data a wide dynamic range into a smaller tonal space. It is essentially the same thing as dithering a 32 bit image to a 16 bit color space, some detail is lost.
the chance of posterization should be reduced if you start with more bits per channel when processing/tonemapping. unless you're applying some extremely steep curve you shouldn't end up with visible steps in colors in your final image
>>
>>16186796
Then fucking show me posterization from tone mapping, prove me wrong!

>>16186818
That's not even the same thing, You can still display all the information in a jpeg, you can still see the entire range of tones.

Im not saying that they aren't tone mapping, I'm saying that you can still see all of the range of the image. This argument is pretty pointless though, because it's fucking obvious that they used a screen over the window, like I showed you guys near the beginning of this arguement
>>
>>16186826
And the guy in this thread is saying that would create posterization because he thinks tone mapping will do that for some reason
>>
>>16186835
Posterization is a certainty trying to fit

>>16186846
>Then fucking show me posterization from tone mapping, prove me wrong!

>You can still display all the information in a jpeg, you can still see the entire range of tones.
wrong
you cannot express full dynamic range of a raw image in your shitty little jpeg

If you could see full dynamic range in a jpeg, nobody would use raw you imbecile.
>>
>>16186853
