The 2017 is badges as a Toyota. All the rest are Scion, although the only difference is the badge, and the interior colours are different on the 17. Which is a shame. I preferred the red and black.

Japanese aerodynamics.
I think it's meant to direct the air coming from the diffuser to create larger areas of turbulence so you can't draft too close due to the lack of pressure.

It's a known issue with the manual transmission. Unless youre racing, the revs won't ever get high enough for this to affect you. If you are racing, you're going to spend most of your time above 4500 anyway.

The 2017 model of the 86 has had the transmission adjusted to eliminate the valley, as well as add an extra 5 Horsepower as a bonus.
>>
>>16176172
noice. would it be cheaper for me to get a 2017 fresh from the assembly or an earlier model for retrofit? Assuming i may want to tinker around with it some more
>>
>>16176165
A tune will improve the dip drastically, an unequal length header will eliminate it completely. I'll admit, I'm a little unimpressed with how these motors respond to mods when naturally aspirated, but hey, it's not a Honda. They do great with FI though.
>>
>>16176205
You can get more HP from just a tune on a stock car. Time will tell whether the new engine will respond better to boost. The new intake manifold netted one turbo car like 15-20 HP, but they were around 400whp with a 10.5/1 compression ratio so lots of boost.

>So why does everyone jerk off the 240SX and cry about how "gutless" the 86 is? Is it just nostalgiafagging?

poorfags.

people can't understand that RWD, torsen diff, 100hp/l engine and sub 2800lbs coupe chassis shouldn't cost more than 12k new.
>>
>>16176412
Because it's cheaper and similar enough to buy one instead of paying 20+k and if you spend 20+k you can get it exactly how you want.
Unless you can't afford to do so and you have to buy a new car and make payments.
Also, the way the 240 feels driving is considered to be better, I hated the way the brz and frs felt driving em. Was trying to like it but couldnt. Not for the price.

First of all, torque dip isn't only present on the manual transmission, it's there with automatics too.

Second, the refresh has slightly more horsepower, but the torque dip has not been eliminated, there are already dynos for the MY17 showing that the dip is still very present.
>>
>>16177614
They didn't do any changes on the automatic version, only the manual.

And so the '17 86 falls short of the hype and still has the valley between 3500 and 4500. Guess that means buddy
>>16176205
Should get a used FRS, and use the 5-8 grand he saves on a forced induction kit to squeeze more performance out of the engine for (ultimately) the same price as a new unit.
>>
>>16177636
I know they didn't do any changes to the automatic, you yourself said that the torque dip is a known issue with the MT. I'm saying it's a known issue with both versions of the car.

As an 86 owner, I'll admit the torque dip feels pretty bad without a tune. Granted I've been tuned for about a year, but without one during the dip the car doesn't even feel like its accelerating.
>>
>>16176969
>Because an ancient 240sx with all the worn bushings, slow as fuck and 18 past owners is better and more fun definitely superior in every way ...

You have got to be extremely retarded. Obviously you haven't driven either of them.

The 86 is a decent car, superior than the 240sx by a huge margin, you are just nostalgiafagging.

Need more power? Supercharge it, it will go up to 270bhp which is fast enough for that little car.

The only time the car feels slow is when you are cruising in the torque dip range and try to accelerate instead of downshifting.

It's actually pretty fun at low speeds. Good for autox.

Don't expect to win many stoplight races though. The driving dynamics make up for the lack of raw power. This car is incredible balanced right out of the factory. Most people won't be able to reach the limits of a stock 86 on public roads.
>>
>>16178472
>I mean does it feel like you're barely keeping up with traffic from a stop?
No, no it doesn't.
>>
>>16178472
The power is there, the car just makes you work for it. The harder you push the car, and rev it up, the more fun it is.

Not everyone wants to upshift/downshift frequently, but I enjoy it. The gearbox is so smooth, that rev matching this car feels very satisfying
>>
>>16178472
the entire point of the car is 'muh feels'

redlining in 2nd at 60 feels plenty fast despite not actually being fast
>>
>>16178472
>does it feel like you're barely keeping up with traffic from a stop?
>0-60 in under 6.something seconds

You're faster than 70% of the cars on the road and faster than 99% of the cars if you launch hard, because they won't.

Sounds good. My current car is very much the same except it's FWD and handles like a boat anchor. I'm interested in buying an 86 but I want to know it's a real upgrade.
>>
>>16178596
Go test-drive one.
>>
>>16178560
>You're faster than 70% of the cars on the road and faster than 99% of the cars if you launch hard, because they won't.
True. But its a sports car. It lacks power. Every shitty gay "sporty" hot hatch will kill you.

The fucking last Celica was hated for being slow. That car was released 17 years ago and has nearly the same power as the gt86 ...
>>
>>16178596
It really depends on what you want/need from your car.

For me, it's exactly what I was looking for. lightweight RWD coupes with more than 2 seats are hard to come by. The fact that it's reliable and economical is just a nice bonus for me.

Definitely drive before you buy. This car is not for everyone.
>>
>>16178616
so? if it was pure performance you're after a type R or a foRS would run rings around most cheap RWD cars

But i'll say that I havent seen a true 'hot hatch' on the road in a long time, since traffic is mostly camrys and assorted bland shit, so unless you live in macau or right off mulholland you're fine
>>
>>16178616
>Every shitty gay "sporty" hot hatch will kill you.
I didn't buy it to race boring cars. Also, I leave my friend in "sporty" 290 bhp hot hatch in the dust if I want to. Mainly because he cheaped out on the rubber because his wide 19" tires are expensive even if you buy chinkshit, while I have stock sized Michelin Super Sports, and because I know how to drive and he leaves traction control on.
>>
>>16178615
>>16178638
Ok. It would be for the best to test. I mean my current car is a lightweight 2door coupe (7 second 0-60) so I would probably feel right at home but I'm looking for an upgrade is all. I've been wanting a RWD version of my car basically.

You could say the same about the miata/fiata.

If you want something semi-fast for under 30k buy a v6 camaro instead, or a WRX if you don't like rwd

Im in germany so hot hatch are the primary "performance" cars in this price range. There are shitloads of em and its sad that they are destroying a real sports car. The modern ones all have 80 - 100 more hp these days.

Surely not in the mountains or the rural roads but thats not were you meet em.

>>
>>16178922
>Hot hatches are just a different category of car
True. They have much more utility and perform better in (real) winter but they lack the coupe look and the fun of driving. They are still the main competition.
>>
why is there no RWD hatch
>>
>>16178963
Because auto makers have a harder time selling RWD cars en masse.

A large majority of consumers is so scared of oversteer that they refuse to buy RWD cars.
>>
>>16178969
understeer is much saver for normies
oversteer is better if you can drive
>>
>>16178963
Bmw 1
>>
>>16178976
Understeer is safer and oversteer isn't better. RWD cars don't oversteer nearly as much as FWD cars understeer. Even my mom can correct oversteer intuitively. The only reason to use FWD is less losses in the shorter drivetrain, no tunnel through the middle of the car, no diff in the back. I'm an engineer in the automotive industry, the muh oversteer boogeyman is a meme.

Having more weight on the driven wheels sure is a plus, but not a main concern from a designing point of view.

One thing that is driving me towards wanting a GT86 one day is that all cars after 2008 don't have to get emissions testing done anymore. It might be a fun project to pick up an GT86 in a few years and do some engine mods to it

I'll probably end up with a used ND though instead.
