I haven't seen any /o/ threads based around the general van life theme. Why is that?
I was planning on buying an early 2000s Ford Van for maybe $3000-$4000 then
>removing inside panels
>insulating with spray foam $200
>install separate battery w/ 150W solar panel for lights, microwave, and minifridge $400
>covering inside insulation with cedar wood. $150
>Putting in one shelf w/ wood bed frame, and a bed w/ storage underneath bed $250
>Finally one rack of brackets for surfboard, skateboard, skies on side of wall you face when you enter van. $ 15 for brackets
Done with inside
>Then adding a motorcycle / bike rack on back for dirtbike and beach cruiser $250
>Stuff canoe with fishing supplies on top rack $80
>Add van awning for max comfiness w/ AR7 survival rifle. $170
>Lift kit $1000-1500? Idk, didn't research much
>Add push bar $250
>Finally adding a front towing winch just in case. $300
>Solar shower bag $30
Done with everything.
In total it would cost about $6095-7595
What is it about lifted vans with push bars and ladders that make them look so comfy?
Was planning on doing this and being comfy w/o having to pay rent.
It would pay for itself in a few like 8-10 months.
Thoughts?
/k/, /out/, /o/, /diy/, /wg/ welcome
Post comfy vans desu.

What's the odometer read
How much she cost ya?
>>
Or you could get a pickup with a shit/no bed, and a sleeper off a semi for $5k and put them together with all the bedding/storage already installed and just add your brackets as needed. Panel vans are run into the ground before they're sold.
>>
>>16152781
Spray foam will make it rust like mad. Put normal fiberglass insulation in.

Try to keep it light as possible, shit gets heavy fast.

Wire 120v shore power and leave a stub for an Invertor.

Wire everything in the walls, plumb everything inside with pex. Don't use shark bites, use crimp connections. Crimp is fine, you don't need the full collar.

I could go on for hours, expect 6 mos build time unless you're unemployed and doing nothing else.
>>
>>16153001
This is not your van, I know the guy who owns it. Post your own or fuck off.
>>
>>16153148
While you're at it pick up the battery box off the semi. 4 truck cranking batteries might give you a nights worth of modern power draw, and deep cycle will give you a few days draw. Install a capacitor for starting at the truck's spec tolerances and you can forgo the low voltage cutoff switch.

>>
>>16153182
>How do panel vans get run into the ground?
It's a work vehicle. By the time it makes it's way through the chain to the lower end of the market, the philosophy is 'run it until it breaks, then replace'.
My friend's father ran his last van until the radiator shut down, then just drove around with the heater full blast to vent heat.
It exploded halfway through a final bodge fix by the roadside.
>>
>>16152781
>I haven't seen any /o/ threads based around the general van life theme. Why is that?
Because you're a newfag.

Forgive TF he only really knows logistics.
Those vans do indeed get the balls run off of them but most vans in the trades get very low miles but get pretty dirty.
Mine was a drywallers van and it took forever to get all the gypsum out of it , but it cleaned up like brand new a few dents from the interior aside.

"overlander" here
a lot of the vans out there are very limiting in the sense that you cannot get very far.
in all the chevy astros and old 2wd ford vans people on here talk about you are going to be pretty much relegated to very established campgrounds with lots of people right next to you.
if you want to truly get deep into the woods you should get a proper 4wd and get a similar set up to pick related.
granted if you plan on living in it full time this is a different situation entirely

I drove a sprinter for work. It was okay. I'll give you a summary

The good
>handled over 300 km/day
>hauled way more weight than it was meant to
>Was generally well thought out and easy to use. New ones even have aux, chargers etc etc built in
>comfy as fuck driver seats
>auto trans had a decent gear select system that allowed for engine braking and good down shifting for hills
>pretty decent fuel economy for their size

The bad
>blew 2 transmissions hauling weight through hills (our other sprinters did this too. Our mountainous routes ate transmissions like nobodys buisness. But the weights probably affected that)
>no fucking dipsticks. You have to get it serviced. Or get the machine that reads all it's shit.
>tire pressure monitors lasted a few months
>door handles are shit. Expect to replace a few

Overall i would probably buy one myself. The high roofs would make a great sleeping loft and you can fit a lot in them. Plus service is readily available in most cities.
>>
>>16155773
Sorry i should add. No transmissions blew before 400,000 km plus. We had an old beater that had 758,000 km. Made it to 600,000 kms before rebuild

>>
>>16156830
>you are going to need more than 150Watts and a single battery m8.

Thats 1kw per day based on 8 hours of sun from the panel.
He won't have any surplus with a 150w panel and no aux battery. Its not ideal but its doable, especially if he drives the van every day and isn't drawing power constantly.
>>
>>16157145
You dont get full sun in the morning or evening. At best its like 5, maybe 6 hours and thats if you are in the southwest. Anywhere else and its more like 3-4 hours of full sun. Also you dont get the full 150 watts because of inefficient losses.

Also, That minifridge lone will use up most of that power. They use about 1kw a day.
>>
>>16157264
In the dc world we talk about amphours

unfortunately vanning has gotten a bad rap due to the internet and vans being seen as pedo-mobiles.

but if you dont give a shit and still want a van: go get one. go to vanning shows (van-ins) to get some ideas and talk to the owners about their vans and how they achevied their goal. most vanners are a friendly enough bunch to help you acchieve a better looking van or look on the forums.

I had an fj60 for years that I loved and regret selling. Thinking of getting a fj80 now bc kids and the wife wants something less spartan than the 60 series. The 80s always seemed like a compromise to me, not as fun as the older cruisers and not as comfortable as a 100 series. That being said I dont like the control arm/no front axle on the 100 series.

Its to dark out for pic. Drive a '12 Malibu. By thrashed I suppose you mean ruined/damaged. That would be a 1. Their is a molded plastic piece that is on the back of the front seats. Its held in by a few of these push pin things (pic related). I sit a lot leaning toward he center of the car so I put a lot of pressure on one side of the seat and doing so eventually popped one out and of course once you pull one out they dont stay in after that. Is the thrash avoidable? Yes, for the most part.

love the 60 as well man those are incredible trucks. 100 is too far gone for me as well.
i kind of see what you mean about the 80 being a compromise but for the most part i would say in terms of capability the 80 and the 60 are pretty much even.

I do a lot of off grid camping despite the fact I setup for stealth camping. Spent a few weeks in Hiawatha National Forest before heading back into town.

Ford econolines have terrible frame and suspension designs. When ford made the extended version all they did was add like 2-ish feet of metal without changing anything else. The regular econoline has very numb steering, the extended version is worse. Even ford fan boys will admit its a fuckup by ford. And may God have mercy on your soul if you ever try to tow anything or carry anything relatively heavy on a hitch mount with an extended econoline.

In all seriousness econolines are ok but they can make your butthole pucker up from time to time. Youll be fine.

your setup is like something an idiot would do.
first off, there is nothing on the market for 3-5k which will have some type of motor which will last 10 thousand miles, if it already isnt fucked when you purchased it.
engine and transmission too.

second - you waste money on foam insulation like a retard and you have not walled off your back doors. those have to be sealed and unusable if you really want some basic insulation.
maybe you should worry more about doing that rather than snapping pictures of your hipster cedar paneling with you iphone like some kind of dirty faggot

A big RWD van is better for off roading than a smaller AWD van like the Astro, mainly due to the higher ground clearance and bigger wheels.

A lifted RWD Astro is better than an AWD Astro on original springs.

Put on a set of all terrain tires on a fullsize van, a 4" lift and maybe a locking rear end and it will go anywhere.

Ford E series, fourth generation, avoid triton motors.

The Astro is a good platform, but it's not durable by any means. AWD makes 4x4 swaps from the s10 easy. 2"+ lift keys & shackles from overland vans makes lifting cheap and easy. Leaf packs from the s10 provide 2-4" of lift for cheap.

I haven't found balljoints that take the abuse, however with the weight directly over the front end it has no issues pulling itself around. Short wheelbase makes wheeling easy.

The Chevrolet express series with awd is an excellent 4x4 swap platform. GM parts availability make up for the poor reliability.

If you want to wheel I'd pick the ford e series with the 7.3. Supposedly 4 wheel drive swaps are nearly bolt on and there's a large bug out aftermarket.

I drove a 1st Generation Doblò a couple if times.
1.3L diesel, disgustingly slow. 260k miles on the clock and always reliable though.

Pretty spacious interior, with lots of head room. If you put a bed in it, you can sit up comfortably.
>>
>>16171610
>Maybe if you have a short van.
>Also, it only needs to get hit by the sun. Doesn't have to be 8ft off the ground.
The bottom of the bag needs to be at least a solid foot above the top one's head, because the water tube needs to be relatively straight or else you will never get good water pressure.

But there are better solutions.

A 6 diameter, 9 foot long PVC pipe on the roof of your van will hold 40 liters or 10 gallons. Paint it black and the sun will heat it up better.
There are 12v self priming pumps on ebay for less than $20. Some can put out 5.5 gallons per minute.
Thats enough to run a higher volume and pressure shower head than you likely have at home.

Most common 4x4 conversions are Ford or Chevy. Both are good.
Both cost $10k or more for a good one.

For AWD, Astro is the only real choice.

I bought a minivan.
>can park it anywhere, can take it camping, can take it for innacity
>won't be bothered, you look just like every other vehicle
>seats either fold flat for resell or you can rip them out for hidden storage pockets
>easy to drive, easy to park, you don't look like a pedo
>decent mpg
>cheap and plentiful, easy to find parts
>going to level the floor out with cardboard, then put a rug on top, also have a folding foam mat and a yoga mat for additional insulation.

Question: Does 1/4 inch foamboard really do shit insulation-wise? Was thinking of covering the windows with a reflectix-cardboard-foamboard sandwich. Reflectix side out for summer, black foamboard side out for winter. What kind of insulative factor can I expect from this? Also, what should I do for the ceiling?

Mainly for heat I'm just going for warm clothes and bedding. Good enough for /out/ing.

yes its pretty much like being a trucker, i actually have a class 2 licence but being 22 when i got it no company would hire me, so basically i just started doing my own thing, and the thing is i can pretty much mas as much doing this as what i could driving for someone else in class 2 (class c = trucks any size/weight without a trailer)

yes its like being a trucker, you're on the road for many hours but honestly i imagine the variety is much better, i mean you can do a few different jobs per day ( as opposed to long haul jobs) the job variety is better too, sometimes you can get some multidrop work, sometimes you'll get a long trip (800 miles etc)

that's one of the things i love, its always different nice variety

Excursions would be a great option, I find a metric fuck ton of them in junkyards so parts are plentiful.

I've enjoyed my 5.0 AWD explorer quite a bit. I've taken it down some extreme trails in the mud, hauls my bike on a rear carrier just fine, rear seats fold down flat for camping inside. Far more capable off road than I would have imagined, it outperformed a lot of wranglers at the local parks. Best of all you can find them in great shape for under $2k, nobody wants the 13mpg but its quite worth it.

when youre making good money, a lot.

if you want to make ~£1000/week its pretty much full time job, put it like this, im never up before 0500 and never home later than 2000.

an average day would be probably 10 hours some long days i guess are around 15 or so

>>16177509
i found this job by just searching owner driver, there's many companies in the UK that work like this using 90% owner drivers or even ONLY using owner drivers

yes there's taxes i dont know what country youre in, but in the UK for taxes its just like any small business. however 1 thing that is a bit different is that i am also VAT registered (even though i dont HAVE to be - £81,000+ is the only requirement for having to go VAT registered)

but it makes sense to register for VAT since 90% of my work is FOR big companies (who are VAT registered - so can claim is back - so they dont care) also I can claim back VAT on all my expenses (fuel is your biggest expense) so it just makes sense

i drive a LWB mercedes sprinter 2011, for this type of long distance and many many miles job you're going to want the best really, and people think merc are the most expensive, truth is its probably the cheapest per mile, the thing just eats up the miles like a champ, but dont forget things do go wrong and need fixing, so that will eat into your profits too. plus youre self employed so all pressure on you to keep things running smoothly.

90% of people doing this work are using sprinters, im actually looking at buying my second van soon, XLWB (4.8 meter load area) sprinter, and hopefully hiring someone to work the first van

my next project is to buy XLWB like picture above and create a small living space in it, could be kinda fun, and then i can make even more money, those long journeys to the other side of the country; i can wait until there's work coming back down, it would make a big different, when you think I can use £70 of fuel on 1 way of a job

I'm a Chauffeur and thats pretty much how I started too.
Bought a car and started doing contract work for big companies.
My plan was to pay off the car, and get an Executive van to add to the fleet. Either a Sprinter or Transit.

Now that my car is completely paid off after three years, I've decided to sell and buy an old van so I can travel while I'm still under 30 and have zero commitments.
Chauffeur work will always be there if I decide to return to it.

This owner driver courier business sounds perfect for me. I'd get to travel a bit and actually make enough money for my expenses.
Since I want to travel, I'd mostly be interested in long distance European jobs.
Are there any particular companies you suggest? Or should I should I take a chance at whatever comes up on gumtree.

Also, does the age of the van matter? The cutoff is basically 7 years for a Chauffeur hire car.
I don't think many companies would want their contractors showing up in vans much older than that.

I know its unrealistic to want an older van.
Shame because I love the LWB dually Mk2 Transits even though they seem small nowadays. And that 4AB DI engine runs forever.

And these 50 series Dodge "Vans" are absolutely huge inside. Higher and wider than even a Luton van, and about the size of a LWB.
They can carry a much heavier payload too.
5 speed gearbox, but they're frightfully slow. Cruising speed is about 60mph without straining the engine.
