just wanted to make the thread anonymously.

now that thats over with I have a question.

so as some of you know I recently picked up a pretty much track ready 1.8 swapped '91 miata that i don't plan on using in the winter.

that being said Im looking for another car to beat on for the winter and Ive been looking for Subaru foresters and outbacks but so far I can't find anything or nobody is answering their emails.

that being said I just found 1990 Miata in my town and was wondering if it would make a decent winter beater if I threw blizzaks on it?

Seller is asking $2500. (i think I could get him under $2k)
280k miles. has been in an accident where a tractor trailer drove up against it slightly and ruined the passenger side. So it was fixed and repainted and paid for the company of the tractor trailer.

fuel pump and timing belt were replaced about 2 years ago.

car has been sitting for 6months but i went to test drive it today and felt healthy.

pic related/more pics in link below

http://imgur.com/a/Z3RbT

so should I pull the trigger? if i dont buy it, im more than willing to give this car off to someone here thats nearby or a friend of mine.

My roof is leaking inconsistent on 90' miat.
After long rains I notice that left side of driver seat is wet. The thing is that I can't figure out what is leaking or where. Roof is dry inside and door handle, or inner door side is dry as well. The only spot water could get inside from is seal above side window because I noticed that water gets in there, but I don't see how water can get from there on my seat without getting across door.

Is there some insider info on that issue?

I've done DDM kit for a 2012 Camry still running strong, and recently on a 2007 Lexus ES, running strong as well.

The newer ballasts are fucking slim and sexy and much improved over the cheap shit from a couple years ago.

the 4300k H11 bulb kit. I was going to go for 9006 bulb size since that's stock for the miata but i don't think it actually matters in terms of the bulb fitting into the projector housing, or whether the connectors are plug and play

What do you guys use for license plate holders for your NA? I have an NA6 (1.6), would getting a cold air intake and a better exhaust be beneficial in anyway besides sound? If just that then I won't spend too much, I wasn't sure if there would be any performance improvements. Car is stock
>>
>>16155235

3 or 3.5k if the engine is cold or I'm short shifting. 6-7k if I'm feeling sassy. This is for an NA6.

What are the consequences of shifting low?
>>
>>16155345

I'm not sure, other than staying out of the power band. The car definitely loses acceleration when you shift early but that's fine for driving in steady traffic.
>>
>>16151955
I wouldn't. If your goal is something to drive in the winter there are better choices. They're not terrible in the snow but if you get a bad storm you're not going anywhere with 1 wheel drive and so little ground clearance.
>>
>>16153469
I bought a well done MSM with the Big Enchilada and a bunch of other parts. I was nervous about it because it had some minor tuning issues and the guy wasnt running the Hydra EMS or big injectors. I took it in to Flyin Miata and they got it all sorted out and running good for about $600. Needs to be dyno tuned at this point to eak out some mmore power but it's pretty good as is.

The car was otherwise immaculate and the owner was not poor or young so I went for it. No regrets. Some of the turbo miatas are real botch jobs that I would stay away from though.
>>
>>16155253
I don't run a front plate even though it's illegal here.
The Randall cowl intake is supposed to be the best for performance. That with a cat-back exhaust might get you 8hp. Beyond that hp gains are not easy or cheap.

I replaced the drivers side handbrake cable since it was broken and wasn't doing its job, and now the passenger side cable isn't doing anything. It stopped working as I was replacing the drivers side cable. Fuckin

The right front spring was snapped and it killed the strut so I'm replacing those too, getting performance struts for both the front tires and neat red springs for it. Once spring (kek) comes I'm gonna probably repaint the car, maybe either keep it white or do a blue. Not sure, but the paint is bad in some spots so I really want to redo it. It also needs new tires, and some interior fixing, and dent removal. Not perfect yet but dam I love it

My 91 BRG has been on and off stands for the better part of a month. I've been fighting with a reman brake caliper that won't stop leaking. After replacing all the fittings and gaskets, I finally returned it as defective after noticing that the piston was scratched to hell.

Been driving my roommate's S-10 in the meantime... that thing is awful. The clutch weighs a ton, the accelerator is positioned way too far back, and the gearbox feels like it's full of mud.

I got a DDM kit for my 2014 Mazda3. Came from China with Chinese instructions and was opened by customs. Google instructions from their site and they were comparably useless so I kind of just yolo'd it. Not really sure how but they gave me twice what I needed, I guess it was for high beams but IDK why the fuck you'd use a light setup that takes 3 seconds to be bright for your high beams.

Honesty fuck OBD2

I have a '97 and it's throwing P0300 codes pretty much daily, yet the car isn't actually misfiring. Power comes on smooth and there is no stuttering at all. I've driven cars that misfire and mine definitely doesn't. The CEL will blink if I rev the car especially high, like over 5000 rpm

The ignition system is good, new ngk wires, ngk spark plugs (gapped correctly), and oem coil pack with 50k miles on it. I also just replaced the crank angle sensor with a new one and adjusted the air gap correctly according to the service manual.

Apparently there is a Technical Service Bulletin for this issue, the listed possible causes are
>Ignition system malfunction
>Low fuel
>Low battery positive voltage
>Fuel system malfunction
>Insufficient compression
>Crankshaft position sensor air gap incorrect
>Egr system malfunction

It says if all if those things are ok then you need to replace the ECU...

Anybody else had this issue? I'm going to do a battery load test tomorrow and if my battery doesn't pass I guess I'll replace that next.

>>16159030
I think I figured it out, I read further about this tsb and it says that if your vin is under a certain number (JM1NA35**V0727842) then your problem is caused by a mis-logic of the ECM/PCM. My vin is lower than this number so I guess I'm going to search for an ECM out of a later '97... fucking annoying.

Hey boys, I was looking at picking myself up a nip tofubox some time during spring/summer of next year. I've got it ruled down to maybe 4 cars, miata being one. Budget is tentatively at 3k, including repairs.

Mr2
> + MR, corolla with better weight distribution
> + can be had cheaply in my area, sometimes as low as 1500 if patient
> + good in corners
> - 4 cylinder can be a bit lacking at highway speeds, 4k rpm for several hours will give headaches
> - lack of low end torque, slushy until higher rpms
Mk2 Supra
> + inline 6, best engine layout ever made
> + low end torque, still okay on MPGeez
> + much comfier on highway
> - parts are getting scarce because nobody fucking bought them
> - prices are erratic, 4k clean or 2k for a fixer upper
Miata
> + FR, nice and light, can hug corners like a ghost
> + aftermarket and replacement parts for daaays
> - overpriced in my area, cheaper to import from Japan, funnily enough.
> - i4 engine is stressed at high rpms, same engine problems as mr2, low end no torque

And then if none of those work out, the last option is any of the i6 Lexus cars produced in the late 90s/early 2000s.

So basically, I come here to you, to try and sell me on getting a miata. Space is not an issue, all I want is weight distribution, power, mpgs, in that order.

meme car, overpriced as hell. would have to raise the budget to 5k for a working (not clean, working) one, no reason when it shares internals with the mr2. I don't want to get into pedantics about the car, but it's simply out of my price range, and I'm not dagumi.
>>
>>16164678
>no reason when it shares internals with the mr2
I think it's better though. I'd have 50/50 FR over MR and 3-door hatch over T-top. You're right though, it's a shame about the price.
>>
>>16164684
MR means less drivetrain loss because engine is closer to power wheels, meaning better MPGs.
>>
>>16164693
I'm mostly leaning towards Miata then. Sophisticated suspension, wind blasting in your face, can drift. I actually don't know anything about Mk2 Supra, I've never even seen one in person. And I doubt there's a significant MPG difference between Miata and MR2.

So i'll be using rust converter for my trunk and i can't help but wonder what am i going to about these little holes. I'm also missing one rubber "cap" under the spare which is gonna allow water into the trunk.

Is there some kind of "filler" I could use to patch em for at least a year? Banging sheet metal and welds is a bit expensive at the moment

Also, do i have to paint the material after or is it alright for a while until i use a more permanent solution. Do i gotta scrape out any flakes or could i just cake the converter so i don't make bigger holes in my boot?

TL;DR
>do i have to scrape rust flakes off?

Yay or nay? Any anecdotes from purchasing there? Where should I get my stuff from?

i've owned both MR2 aw11 and the miata na

>mr2 has better weight distribution for pure performance because of rear bias, miata wd is better on the roads, and stuff like autocross where balance is better
>miata has better suspension since it uses double wishbone on both front and read but has a bit too much bodyroll stock, mr2 has better stock setup but uses mcphersons which are good, but not double wishbone good
>maintenance cost is pretty comparable
>as for driving postion miata beats not only mr2 but pretty much all the cars on the market, but mr2 is way more comfortable
>as for the driving feel both feel amazing, miata communicates with you all the time so you know you're gonna lose tracton way before it happens, while mr2 is a little bit more unpredicteable but a bit more snappy with stock suspension, and no, you don't need to worry about snap oversteer

in the end whatever you'll choose will be fine
personally i ended with a miata only but that's because i just couldn't jusfiy maintaining two such similar cars

>>16165426
it's a fine engine if you don't care about power that much
it revs a bit better than 1.8
a good choice if you'll plan to turbo it, because you can easily and safely reach 200-220hp

though watch out for the really early ones, because they had short crankshaft problem, be sure to ask about it before buying
>>
>>16165426

Don't care. Most people will envy you or just not have any opinion. Bikers who call people "cagers" are obnoxious manchildren with a victim complex that do everything they do for attention and should be disregarded. In general convertibles are kind of shit but the Miata is a great car and personally I'd only be concerned with the opinions of people who know about cars, not idiots who just parrot what they hear on 4chan.

The Miata will not care about turning 4k+ RPM on the highway for hours at a time. It will be fine. With a stock or non-rice aftermarket exhaust, you won't really care. Add a turbo system and you'll not want for torque anywhere except under 2k RPM.

The battery on my 91 just died, needs replacing. What's a cost effective decent battery that I can put in? Does it really need to be one of those sealed/vented batteries? I'm pretty sure battery tech must have gotten way better since the late 80s, right?
>>
>>16167065
so basically, miata for handling, mr2 for comfort.

I took my 00 focus out for a bit of hooning tonight, and I felt terrified going into corners too fast because I could just feel the fwd reaching its limits. It's the first (possibly last) fwd I've ever owned, and while it makes an uneventful commuter, it genuinely scares me when trying to reach its limits. There is no controlled drift or countersteering to correct once your wheels lose traction, you just slide into whatever fence post is nearest. Terrifying.

With all said, currently leaning towards the mr2, but I would jump on a na or nb miata provided one comes up that's low priced and clean.

Why do people always say the Miata is slow, even when referring to the new one?

i know one magazine or something claimed sub-6 but it must be an outlier, most others report 6.1-6.8 depending on where you look. doesn't sub-6 seem too fast for that power and weight? NB 1.8 0-60 is something like 7.9s and a similar weight and adding 15 extra hp isn't going to shave off a whole 2 seconds

so my miata battery died.

(i just bought a 91 miata 2 weeks ago off someone on craigslist)

the battery (PowerStart) was purchased by the previous owner in January. Thing is the previous owner didnt have the receipt for the battery.

so would it be a dick move to try and get a new battery in the previous owners name? I already went to pepboys seeing that they sell PowerStart Battery's and they told me to come back tomorrow when the manager is there.

They assumed I was the previous owner when trying to return the battery and I went with it

or should i just say fuck it and spend whatever amount of cash on a new battery

need an answer.

isn't it kind of high mileage and the 'runs well" thing is kind of scary, why not say it "runs great" unless it has issues.

it just seems expensive for the mileage, i'd rather get one with less than 50k if possible
>>
>>16174055
Mileage doesn't really matter that much, just do a compression test, check for oil leaks, make sure it doesnt burn oil, all the usual stuff. There are a lot of miatas out there that have lowish miles but are legit thrashed. Mileage isn't everything

In the NA it's pretty soft and there is a fair amount of body roll. The r package Bilsteins are on the other end of the spectrum, stupid bumpy and not in a good way

I haven't driven a stock NB but they have stiffer springs and sway bars. They are pretty composed.

With the NA, a suspension upgrade is pretty much mandatory, the stock shocks blow out at like 70k miles or something. (The Bilsteins dont though) The NB has higher quality shocks.

Guys, is it worth it to go from a 4.3 oped diff to a 4.1 torsen on a 1999 5-spd 1,8? I gan get one for probably $500-600
>>
>>16175457
I thought you were selling your miata?
>>
>>16176367
short answer: yes yes yes

longer answer: keep in mind limited slip diff requires a bit of knowing how to handle it and can fuck you up
but in return it allows you to some hektik skidz even in an underpowered miata
also, i'd rather search for 6 speed torsen
or 6 speed fuji even but these are considerably more expensive
>>
>>16176588
Thank you. I have been going fully hektik for the past two winters, so I am very comfortable with oversteer, but i will keep it in mind. 6-speeds are so much more expensive over here, $1000 and more, so I will keep my 5-speed for the time being. This diff is also closer to the original ratio, a diff from a 6-speed is 3.9, so it would really screw with the responsive feel of the car.
>>
>>16175385
What I love most is the balance and the stock torsen diff.
>>
>>16176944
what does the ratio do?
>>
>>16176588
Imo the torsen makes the car more predictable, not less. I may just be used to having an LSD though. I drove an open diff miata recently and it felt so wrong.
>>
>>16177050
Straight from Google

"The final drive determines the ratio of how many revolutions the driveshaft makes to turn the rear differential or tires one turn. So if you have a final ratio of say 4.11 then that means that the for every 4.1 turns of the drive shaft the rear wheels will do one full turn.

With a ratio of say 3.23 for every 3.23 turns of the driveshaft the rear wheels do one full turn.

How does this affect acceleration?

The reason a higher gear number such as 4.11 will help accelerate a car faster is because the engine can spin up faster, getting into and through it's powerband faster and creating more leverage to turn the wheels(this applies to front wheel and 4WD as well) The higher the number the higher the torque multiplication factor."

Car with open differential sends power to the wheel with less resistance. That means that if you try to drift it youi'll be sending almost all power to the inside wheel. Skidding on one wheel isn't very controllable. In general you should avoid losing traction like plague in an open diff cars. Lsd locks (mechanically, through series of gears) distributing power more equally.
This video explains why cars has open diffs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jprM58PiYyg
This compares car with and without aftermarket LSD https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jprM58PiYyg

literally anything but riceland is better

most spring/damper combos too which honestly is enough for 99% of people

meisterr is good, a friend of mine uses them on his RSX and he's happy with them

again though, look into spring/damper combos
they are cheaper and you get to pick spring rates and then dampers that complement them/ your driving style

ride height adjustment is a meme for 99%
>>

do you actually need adjustable ride height?

I'd like it. I find that many spring damper combos lower the car too much for the road, and I have some fuckhuge speedbumps near my work. I'd like to ride near stock height most of the time and lower it when I hit the track.

Nice job ignoring 75% of that post. Changing height for track and city driving is a reasonable reason for height adjustable coilovers, and as a matter of fact I do have a couple of sets of rims/tires. I got some OEM 14s with summer tires for daily use and some 15s on slick for track use.

So guys, everything between the rear brake plates to the diff housing on my nb8a is being replaced and i'm about to start putting it all back together. Thing is, i've heard that some bolts need a bit of torque.

yea of course, it would be wise to use a torque wrench, just did a spring swap on my NC this week and snapped a few a-arm bolt heads off with ease. the car is only 4 years old and has never seen snow/ is rust free

you'd be surprised about the lack of grade 8 hardware, and how easy it is to just ruin bolt heads , threads etc

FDguy here;

Looking at a '99 NB, manuel, sub-3k - anything I should

It's looking like it's got junk/salvage records - is it even worth my time driving the 60miles to go check out? I don't really know how much I should expect to pay for one of these.

Have always liked the Miata, thought I might pick one up for a second fun tuner and maybe to DD since my other car obviously isn't the most reliable thing on the planet, my current DD is a Chevy Equinox that I'm thinking about selling/trading - it was given to me, and I hate it.

if it's been salvaged then I would be extremely cautious. If you don't need one urgently, wait for a better one to pop up. Once winter sets in, all the boomers will be selling off their summer toys for cheap.
>>
>get a type R front lip
it doesnt fit.... I need 4 arms to even prop it into place
>try and change oil
All my stands are at my friends garage, I only have a floor jack, that is too tall to get far enough under the car to lift safely.

At least the door trim reskin came out very nice. Now I need to trim the parcel shelf carpeting to the new roll bar, but that's also a bitch.

And to top that all off it's getting to be snow season and it's hibernation time soon.

Best car I've ever owned.
>>
>>16191582
Yeah, I'm really hesitant to buy a salvage in general, knowing exactly what happened to it or not. It's entirely at my leisure to buy one, so I'll wait a month or two and start looking again.

In the meantime I can see if my uncle'll let me take his NC out for a spin again at least.

Turns out there was rust underneath, is that typical for a 92? Also had caked up oil outside of the oil pan. So this thing is rusting and leaking and I'm probably going to sew a tarp into the top. Worth it for $800? Engine wasn't knocking and transmission sounded fine, it didn't overheat
