I am waiting for snow, it is interesting watching dumb asses try to pass my plow truck in less than forgiving conditions. Last winter I had a dipshit try to pass on a hill, he was greeted by oncoming traffic and took the shoulder on the left lane.

If I lived up north still, I know a bunch of people who do it and I would def jump on one of their trucks during the storms. Good way to make some extra xmas cash but totally depends on how the winter goes. In Chicago, you will have winters where you need to break out the plows once or twice and other years when you get a dozen big storms and can straight bank on those 36hr caffeine and cocaine fueled runs.

Depends. Some spots you can't avoid it. Just try not to take any utility poles with you.

Pic unrelated. Too lazy to find the eminem pics
>>
>>16158320

But if you're driving a bus or straight truck, they're 100% avoidable.

It's amazing how often senior drivers at the bus company bounce their buses off the curbs. You would think after 10+ years of driving experience they would know better.

We have these 12 bay straight trucks they use for vending now and I always hated driving those things. All the main roads around here are like 6 lanes and divided so you have to pull tons of u-turns. Those fucking straight trucks have such a bad turning radius that you have to do 3-pt turns even with 4 lanes and a median worth of room.
>>
I just got chewed out by some harpy with a desk job for not going 5 hours out of my way to swing by the west memphis terminal to get new registration which from what I was told a few days ago is good until December. I'm a little mad. I'm totally down with stopping in if my route takes me on 40 or 55 but don't expect me to head there just because I passed thru Little Rock going south.

Idk, it has been lighter and I'll volunteer to go do paperwork for a day a week so it ends up being 35-40hrs a week and like $900-$950 gross. If I run all 5 days and work 40-45, it's right around $1000, and then summer picks up and will be closer to $1100 and 45-50hrs a week.

I could almost always offter to work a Saturday too and they are normally short(er) days so come in 6-7hrs and end up with $1200 for the week.

But when you start, you still gotta figure everything out and will work a lot of 50-60hr weeks.

I'm fine with that. If it pays 16 an hour, 10-15 ot I'll definitely take it. Especially if its cdl A so I can get experience. I'd actually prefer labor instead of only driving for hours on end. It just seems like almost a waste of time because no one will hire me without experience. And I really don't want to do otr

That's why I would never do OTR for $50k. Fuck that. Do the math and I'm getting $20-$25/hr. If you count the time you're stuck in the cuckshed at a truck stop in Wyoming, you are really making a fraction of that.

Not shit for truck driving experience. They hire recent grads for those jobs all the time because the turnover is so high. If you aren't a pussy, the job isn't that terrible. Lots of stuff pisses me off about it but I get to work by myself all day at my own pace and I'm not stuck in a cubicle building resentments against coworkers and bosses.
>>

It would be nice of I could make that here but local drivers typically get paid $14-$16/hr. with the exception of Western Refinery. I'm not sure if Jobe or Cemex pays any better to haul rocks.

Lifting 30lb cases of drinks all day, dealing with asshole customers, and you have to stock coolers at some stops.

I'd rather do that than live in a cuckshed for 350 days a year.

And it's a starter job. You do it for a couple years and move onto something else. Only reason I'm still there is because I'm too lazy to start at a new company from the bottom. I clocked out at 11am today and got paid for a full day.

I was 22 early this year, straight out of cdl school I landed a job at a building materials supply company. $18/hr but quickly moved to $20. Almost zero manual labor, all the materials are handled with forklift's. Really good owner that has enough connections to keep deliveries year round to keep everyone working 40 hours a week. It was a rare thing though. Only reason I got it was they had a retiring driver and the guy they originally wanted walked away from the job. All the other drivers are in their 40's telling me how shit OTR was.

Keep your eye on craigslist, it's an amazing resource imo. Roofing companies and a trench digging company were also ones that tried hiring me.

Just expect to work. Only reason I get out of there in 40hrs a week is because I work smart and keep moving the whole day. Some of these new guys are lazy as shit (and dumbasses) and they are bitching that they clock out at 6pm everyday when they are on their phone half the day. I only drive like 60-70mi today, and a lot of that is the drive to and from my route so I'm in the truck for 10min, at a stop for 20min, repeat.

Last week on I-24 headed to Nashville from Chattanooga, I saw a wreck on the eastbound side as I was going west, one truck slammed into another. My best guess judging by the angles they were mated together at, the truck in front was on the shoulder, and moved into the right lane at a low speed. The rear truck slammed into the front truck's trailer so hard, the ass of the trailer was at the edge of the bed in the sleeper berth. Looked like the left side of the trailer cleaved the driver's seat nearly down the middle, too. Didn't see the driver, emergency responders were already working the scene. I'd wager that driver isn't alive any more, but if he is I very much doubt he's in one piece.

Yeah, you'll have higher disposable income being homeless, but the rookie year is the lowest grossing, highest cost year for drivers, between acquiring equipment and learning how to just do the job correctly. The learning curve takes about 8-12 months to go from shit to passable, with mastery coming in 20-48 months. It's not unheard of to double your income in your second year.

It's just the culture.

All of black culture is summed up in the simple concept of self-aggrandizement.
If a nigga ain't the center of attention at all times, he's a failure in his own eyes.

Best demonstrated by their hilarious attempts at being humble or apologetic.

All they can think is "wait til they see how fukken humble n shit I am they gon love me" and it comes off overdramatically acted for effect.
>>
>>16171717
Also demonstrated any time a nigga is forced to give a compliment.

It can't be personal.

It has to be public.

It has to be more about the congratulater than the congratulatee.

Bruhs it's insane. I used to cater from a deli staffed by 90% googles and we couldn't work over their volume just talking to each other. It got to a point where me and the catering coordinator began communicating through written notes because it was more efficient and our details were more accurate than trying to verbally communicate over them. I'm unironically considering moving to the U.S and trucking. I'm a freindless loser with no money or future, but unlimited patience - I can literally sit down and stare at a wall for hours on end. I'm also good at driving efficiently, getting 30mpg out of my diesel Isuzu Trooper before some asshole ran into it, and to top it all off I qualified as a mechanic in 2010, with a genuine interest in vehicles big and small meaning I know my way around most, and can easily find my way around any I don't. No crimes.

Are you an imbecile? They said to take them in 5th or 6th because that's the highest gear you can take a turn without stalling. You can be going 5 miles an hour on 5th. And if you feel stalling ride the clutch. They say this because stalling on the dmv test is an automatic fail
>>
>>16176104
>My downshifting sucks and he never let's me practice
It's a combination of feel and timing. Put some light pressure on the shifter into the gear you're going into and as the rpms pass through the range where you can get it into the gear it'll practically feel like it sucks the shifter into the gear. Most of the time newbs try to shift too quickly and you probably are too. Relax. you can't rush the truck so no point in trying.

Is there a stipulation for placards/HazMat while hauling car batteries? I asked the shipper if I needed either of those and they told me no, which contradicts what I've read about hauling Class 8 materials.

Why do I see so many owner operators with custom 48' spread axle reefers? Those ones where the paint matches the tractor so you know they own both units.

Like, what's the benefit to having fixed axles and a trailer that's 5' shorter than the norm?

Looks like they're back since they could only afford one night in a hotel.

>>16181684
Spread axles aren't common, and reefers ate usually refused over 10 years old, so O/O's usually custom order them and run them the whole 10 years. A spread axle can carry 20,000lbs per axle, where a tandem can only hold 17,000lbs per axle. 90% of reefer loads only take up 45' of space, so taking 380cu ft of seldom used space off the trailer cuts down on cooling costs, and also saves a few hundred pounds of weight. It also makes the rig easier to maneuver in tight produce markets since there is no tail swing. Top of the list for me is you never have to worry about getting the axle weights balanced since if the net weight of the cargo is legal for the rig's gross someone has to fuck up really bad to get an axle weight over the limit.

And people wonder why I buy CDs and rip them and stick them on things for offline playback.

Admittedly, I'm now using three devices for said playback because of muh autism. My car's running off a USB stick, music 'on the go' or not in the main area at work is from a dedicated MP3 player, and music in the main area at work is played from my phone, when it's my turn to abuse the speakers and shake the walls.

>>16180434
Just be careful on roundabouts; someone at work supposedly had their car demolished by a truckload of car batteries they carved up on a roundabout.

Trucking sounds more appealing now. I just put in a 9+ hour shift at work, then did some shopping, filled my car up, and sat in traffic. And now I have to go out and see people from work again, for someone's birthday meal.
Thus making it two nights in a row I don't get any time for Skyrim. Having friends is hard on my gaming schedule.
But at least I got to test out the new speakers at work properly. Ran them through a range of frequencies, and they didn't explode. Nor did the shelf fall off the wall it was glued to.

Prime trainers have gone downhill since I've been there a lot of them get into it for just the money.

>>
>>16184798
Yeah, but they dropped the driveline to get the back box out, so they couldn't move it after they started tearing it down. They've got a shower, vending machines, and a customer shower. There are 5 hotels, 2 grocery stores, and more than a dozen restaurants within a mile, so it's pretty nice. Most drivers are too fat to walk anywhere, but there's a ton of food delivery, and a few taxis ads all over the driver's area. They've got oversized leather lounge charts with ottomans, so 4-8 drivers can sleep in the customer lounge overnight since it's a 24/7 shop. They only have 2-4 techs overnight, so work is slow when active shift ends, but they can tie up loose ends and get shit set up for the morning. It's a 20 bay shop, and they've got steady work with a wrecker arriving every hour or two all through the night.

office fag here to vent

Had a driver that lives out of her truck in my office venting, going over her routing, complaining about the business side of things and how she could fix the account, criticizing my decision making, being a general nuisance for 7

>7 h o u r s
>h
>o
>u
>r
>s

today. After nodding my head, showing empathy, agreeing with her for 6 of the 7 hours, while at the same time trying to manage the schedule, the other 22 drivers (all of which who are unloading on me because of schedule changes that are out of my control), customers and warehouse, , I reached my boiling point and started to check out. Started looking at my phone instead of paying attention, gave short answers trying to give her a hint that I was getting tired of it and all of a sudden

>"you know, you office guys just don't get it!"
>"aren't you a manager?"
>"and this is how you treat your drivers?"
>"jesus christ this is the worst company!"

what do drivers really want?
What am I missing?
Of the ones that I see, I have time for roughly 20-30 minutes of venting per driver per day which is fairly usual. But I simply can't take an entire day's worth. If I were to ride along with her and complain about my job and talked about myself for 7 hours, don't you think that would drive her insane?

I actually do care about feedback from the drivers, because I know it's shit out there. But how do I deal with a driver like this? How do I assert myself and let drivers know when it's too much without making them buttrustled?

I was thinking of just having her write down all the grievances and I would process them later. A 200 mph, one way conversation going a thousand directions at once for 7 hours is just leaves the driver frustrated, nothing resolved, and me at my boiling point

Speaking from a pool of experience working at small, tight knit companies that have a lot of drivers/workers interacting and talking with one another, that kind of person in that kind of headspace is poison, and a morale killer to those around them.

No matter how skilled, competent and valuable she may be in terms of her experience and abilities (or not), if she is that unhappy with the conditions of her employment, and those conditions are unlikely to change maybe its time that she move on to greener pastures.

I would be up front with her that you have plenty of other pressing matters to deal with if she drags on that much.

>What is a power cooler?

Lots of the guys I used to work with at my previous trucking job would eat out at least twice a day for every day of their 29 day hitch.

I never understood why they would waste so much money instead of spending 150 bucks on a cooler/lunch box heater and buying some groceries.

This. Have you tried doing your job properly? 99% of complaints can be summed up as 'you didn;t fix shit management broke, despite it being your job'.

Tell them to go to 4chan and vent their work related grievances there. Just like you did!

i think that she had 7 hours of free time to bitch is proof you aren't routing her properly. that being said just tell the truth, drivers arent getting the miles cause the planner is shitting on you. and the planner is getting shit on by the shippers cause of what the drivers do. and if the ball of fuck thats going on wasn't enough, we have management rubbing their dicks on it trying to "improve it" if you want it to be better, be nicer to the shipper, even if they're fucking assholes.
that is of course, if she isnt just blatantly bitching. cause really she's living out of a truck i doubt she's happy with herself and her life choices and, as we've seen they can do poor life choices for 22 years and still be alive.

i cant count the number of times ive watched an original driver from heartland loose their shit and cuss out someone at a truck stop or at a shipper and just fuck off twitching back to his truck. naturally, having the same fucking logo on my hat ive literally stepped up and had to apologize for his actions cause i know itll effect me or any future jobs i get. i get upset too but that's not an excuse to fucking cuss someone out. especially the fucking cashier who just said they were sold out of fucking cigarillos

Finally out of the shop. Final bill was $4650 and I talked them down to $4200. Goddamn these gears are tight. Computer revved to the moon in a few gears after I picked up my trailer. Guess they've got some breaking in to do.

so what did they replace?
>>
>>16188497
With those prices, I'm gonna go ahead and assume you were either in some major metropolitan city where you were charged for storage of your truck overnight as well or you were in Canada.

>>16185786
What else you think she does with her Bluetooth by her ear while driving? All of that literally prepped her for the shitpile she unleashed on you.
If there's one thing most truckers know how to do well is talk someone's ear off about abso-fucking-lutely nothing. Even better if it's Trucking/job related!

Back box and range selector.

>>16188883
Outside Columbus, OH. No charge for storage. $2400 was labor, so ~20 hours at a variable rate of $105-$140/hr since they bill diagnostics and general labor differently.

Why did you buy an auto?

Are all of the old Interstate trucks autos or were some sticks? You mentioned a small batch of Interstate Columbias having a drop axle.

Fugg if you would have said something you could have stayed with me. Live on the southeast side of cbus

This truck was supposed to be for a driver I hired, but then I remembered people are fucking morons so I started driving it when I fired him. It's cheaper in terms of sale price, and can attract older, more experienced drivers with rekt left knees.

I've seen a few 3 axles with sticks, and all the tag axles had sticks. If I would have known the total cost of this job I would have just bought a 13 speed manual and swapped it in for the same cost.
