Why did toyota give up on making good engines after 2005? The 86 has a cucked Subaru motor and the new Supra will have a BMW engine. Their best engine currently availible is only in the RC-F and GS-F, and it has mediocre performance.
Will Toyota engines ever be great again?
Mechanically Simple/ Reliable Engines are a thing of the past...
now everything is over engineered to the point of walking a razor thin line with failure.

Unless you need to for proprietary reasons, it's efficient to accept any black box that fits into a space with allowable center of gravity, power band, and fuel economy requirements. In various "how it's made" car documentary videos, a lot of those "super cars" have engines made by other engine fulfillment companies even though the super car company came up with the specs and did the engine QC and power profile testing. Of course, the super car company slaps their brand on the engine and takes credit for it.
