So who here on /o/ actually turns a wrench for a living? We all love cars here, but who amongst our ranks gets to see the dirty stupid side of things?
If I wrenched for a living I probably would stop enjoying cars, so I choose not to.

This.
I know a few mechanics that are super burnt out on cars and only do the bare minimum on their cars.

That's fair. I'm actually a railroad mechanic, so most of my work is heavy industrial; locomotives, generators, bucket loaders, screening equipment. I only occasionally have to fix fleet vehicles, so I can actually enjoy working on cars on the side at my leisure without resentment.

I can definitely agree on this point. It would sap any excitement to do work out of me.

I agree. Most shops barely pay $15/hour. But railroad mechanics make it alright. With a little overtime here and there, I don't exactly have money burning a hole in my pocket, but I don't go without either. I own a home, two nice cars, and a clunky but reliable old Chevy pickup. Plus, I save a fortune by not having to take my wheels in to a shop every time something squeaks or shakes.

Which RR? I'm a Boilermaker with BNSF in the locomotive overhaul and wreck repair backshop. Don't get to do much wrench turning, more fabrication and welding.
