What are your thoughts on the Golf GTI and Golf R?
GTI starts at $25,595 here, and the R starts at $39,375. One big thing, before I get to anything else, is that VW isn't producing a 2dr GTI for 2017. I guess 2016 was the last model year of the 2dr GTI, which sucks.
From what I'm getting, the R, which is $14k or so over the base model GTI, is just a GTI with all of the upgrade packages, a larger turbo, and the 4TRONIC AWD shit. CR is saying it makes nearly 300hp, 72hp more than the GTI.
These look pretty cool, I don't know why I've never noticed them before.
Why would someone buy a Focus RS over the Golf R. I've seen the RS go for >$50k where I am.
Keep in mind, the Golf R doesn't look like a fucking hotwheels car, nor does it have a gimmicky drift button.

Isn't Golf R a Haldex based AWD system?
Not that the RS has a much better system, but it's definitely the sportier of the two. More of an STI competitor than the Golf R is.

>Isn't Golf R a Haldex based AWD system?
Yup.
It's FWD until it detects slip, so it literally drives like a GTI on steroids.
The Golf beats the Focus for comfort and interior quality, but in terms of driving dynamics it's no contest.

Yes, but it's a new generation Haldex system, and some reviewers are saying the 2017 R handles much better than cars with previous systems
>vag
Guess what?
They're both shit.
>>16114170
It handles better than the RS3 platform-mate with mechanical 50/50 split quattro
Haldex being shit is a fucking dumbass meme from when the system first came out and it was noticeably slow to react (Mazdaspeed 3 and Volvo S60R/V70R in particular)
>>16114137
How much is the BMW M140i? I would take one of them over either.
Focus RS is so expensive because of the "fast ford tax". They go for crazy money and hold their value well for some reason.

Coulda had a v8
What hot hatches even are there?
>Focus RS
>FiST
>Golf GTI
>Golf R
>Abarth
In US markets, what else is there?
>>16114287
Focus st
Veloster turbo?
>>16114313
Yeah, I guess I forgot about the Veloster.
There's also the Veloster Rally Edition. Kinda cool.
>>16114439
>Veloster Rally Edition
Just a regular Turbo with a paintjob that's a fucking pain to clean.
Also its sister car, the Forte SX.
>>16114287
Old WRX/STi hatches I guess... Mazdaspeed3
>>16114313
>>16114447
Calling a Veloster (turbo, rally, or otherwise) a hot hatch is just silly.

So, what is the ultimate hot hatch, then?
I think we could probably narrow it down to the Focus RS and the Golf R, no?
>>16114211
This, and checked.
>>16114573
A45 AMG, RS3?
>>16114573
I mean historically it's hard to top a Mk1 GTI, currently it's the AMG A45/Focus RS/Fiesta ST depending on your price range.
>>16114595
I'd agree, and they may be fucking amazing, but they're not sold in American markets :(
So they're irrelevant for all intensive freedom purposes
