Get the extra displacement if your goal isn't riding like a madman. If it is, then get the gear. BTW many, many generations of riders don't crash constantly but /dbt/ live on the extreme edge. I'd rather have the extra horsepower to save my ass than be limited by tiny engine.

If your helmet meets DOT standards it's reasonable protection. If interested you can compare Snell and DOT standards but main thing is wear the fucking thing and make it a full coverage helmet so you don't grind your face off. Helmet, jacket, riding gloves (I use TIG welding gloves because light, tough, comfortable and I can use them for welding in a pinch) will do for starters and you can add specialty boots and pants later. It's personal preference but I've worn steel toe lineman style boots for many years. The toes bother some people but my other hobbies are more dangerous to feet than riding. No "engineer" AKA biker boots though. No laces means no ankle support.

ATGATT types may get ranty and they do have a point if you think the street is a race track.

ATTGAT not because we ride like idiots, but because of fucking cagers running us over
>>
>>16109331
Eh
As an ex-atgatt, I recommend focusing on getting quality boots, gloves and a helmet. These are what may actually save your extremities from involuntary amputation. The jacket and pants are for limiting road rash and not much else.

A spaceship has limited delta velocity available.
When you burn far from a planet you can change your velocity from say 3km/s to 4km/s, but if you burn closer to a planet where you're already going 4km/s you'll get 5km/s and that is a bigger change in energy

Honda FMX 650 and Yamaha XT660x.
The honda has the dominator engine in it.
Anyone can tell me anything about those bikes, especially the maintenance. Fuel range? Thanks.

>>16110147
Thank you anon. Got any chill out tunes over there?

>>16110175
The FMX 650 has a pretty meh reputation, the XT660 is regarded as an all time classic. Both are torquey as fuck and I loved my time on a big single. Maintenance is easy (well, could be easier on an aircooled single but what gives) and the engine is regarded as very durable.
>>
>>16110192
Got my A2 license this year (yep, thats the restricted one). I choose to make a motard my first big bike, didn't ride anything big before that.

Anyways, I'm looking at the maintenance of those. The FMX needs oil changes at 3000km (i think) and valve checks aswell.

The yammy is apears to be more durable though-but has more electronics (scares me a little working on them lol).

KTMs are utter CRAP, except you got money, ex Husqvarna/SWM even more.

Did I miss anything else?
>>
Are the CB125F and YBR125 my only decent options for an A1 bike? Which is better?

If you want something really easy to work on, the older 600 platform from Yamaha is a tad easier to put your hands into and the bike was built in true shitbike, easy-to-work on fashion. Also, it'll be very cheap.

The 660 needs oil at every 5000km, valves and a major service every 20000km and minor services every 10000km. I can't speak for the honda. I would avoid European bikes altogether if you're after some savings.

The Yamaha isn't the easiest bike ever to work on (compared to a CG125 for instance) but it isn't bad either. I did my first valve check ever on the 660 platform while working on the curb.
>>
>>16110306
>More common than dirt

As in for buying used? Because I need to buy it new. I can't afford to drop a grand or more at once, so I need to do the 65 quid/month finance. Or do you mean for aftermarket? Because I live in the middle of bumfuck nowhere, but oddly there is a yamaha dealership in my town.
>>
>>16110314
Then get the yammy. Chek first which one has the cheapest parts I'd say.
>>
>>16110307
Thanks for the info! I think the Honda needs new oil at 4000km and is made the same fashion those old 600 yamahas were.

But what about the cam chain. When does this fucker need to be replaced.

Or is it the same way like in a car engine (change it when it starts making noise).

Do the besic maintenance yourself (oil changes, chain..) but leave the more complicated stuff to the shop (eg. valve adjustment).
>>
>>16110403
>leave the more complicated stuff to the shop (eg. valve adjustment).

Do you think it's possible for an amateur to learn? I have a 130iq, though of course iq is pretty irrelevant. I don't mind dedicating time to learning, I just really cannot afford to get it repaired unless I absolutely have to. I have a savings account with a few hundred in it, but I really don't want to dip into that.

>cam chain

Cam chain are usually not wear items on motorcycles. Tensioners have a tendency to fail over time on some models — creating increasingly loose chains easily identifiable by a rattling noise at idle — but the cam chain itself would need a very large amount of use to even warrant thinking of replacement. You'd be thinking anything between 200.000km to 400.000km or even more to actually have to replace one. And I'm guesstimating these numbers based on what I've googled in the past, I never actually heard of someone replacing their timing chain.

Assuming street usage on the first 50.000km you're looking at oil+filters, air filters, valve adjustments, tires, chain+sprockets, spark plugs and that's pretty much it. Brake pads maaaaaybe. Steering and sprocket bearings if you're unlucky. Maybe a burnt bulb or two. This is nearly standard on all bikes.
>>
>>16110420
it's not impossible but it takes a specialized set of tools and exacting attention to detail. it's all in the service manuals though

There's nothing a shop does that you cannot learn to do with a bit of study except jobs which require expensive special tools. It's only a motorcycle. Every complex task is a sequence of simple tasks. I take notes and my cheap point-and-shoot camera serves me well on many vehicles and machines I work on.

Spend a lot of time on motorcycle forums. You'll figure out whose techniques and advice are worth watching.

If you want to learn more hang out with mechanics, and if you can score a cheap beater to fuck with you can learn to wrench on that while riding your new, in-warranty machine. Learning to wrench pays off in many ways throughout ones life so have at it. What one man can do, another man (or woman, my wife was a very good helicopter mechanic) can do.

I do mostly road riding with occasional gravel/caliche road exploration. There is a lot of road trash in my area but would sealant be worth its price?

Ill be fully honest with you
As a commuter bike around town and up to 70-80mph it's great
But if you want to overtake on an interstate, you have to really rev it.
If you're travelling on a major highway every day, I'd say get a ninja 500 or something
Otherwise the r3 is really damn nice

If you're wearing more than shorts and a T-shirt there's not much difference, unless you have a huge windshield. But i guess a fairing does keep your legs warm and drier.
