Also my car clicks and very low speeds (usually in second gear). Any idea's why it does that? It sounds like it's coming from the back side. The previous owner (a friend) took it to a few places to have it checked out and they couldn't figure out whats wrong with it.

I've got a 5.0HO Motor, 4 Core Radiator, and 180F thermostat.
That's literally all the modifications that have been made.

After a lot of spirited driving I got home, and not only was the radiator lukewarm the intake wasn't even hot enough to scare my hand away.

Is this actually a problem? I heard if I'm not building up enough heat I could be scoring shit by oil not building up.

Your engine is sucking in water and misfiring, the misfire is popping up the CEL, quit driving it in anything deeper than your foot, you could potentially hydrolock it if its deep enough and blow your engine.
>>
>>16107280
Your intake will probably be the coolest part of the engine.

That being said if you have a stuck open thermostat, the engine wont warm up to operating temp no matter how hard you're running.

If you're running synthetic I wouldn't worry much about scoring, if you're running conventional yes, it could be a problem.

Depends on how they're designed. IIRC some cars only brake one side when pulled.

In my bmw you have to loosen the cable at the lever then line up a hole the disc with the adjustment screw and back it all the way the off then retension it til it holds.
>>
>>16107587

Odds are if your system sounds like shit you'll need to redo/rewire the entire system with new speakers and add an amp. If you're not familiar with rewiring cars i wouldn't attempt it.
>>
>>16107582

for most vehicles its just the same as this link, you take the drum off then use a flathead screwdriver to spin the star. you will see the adjuster push out, if its going in youre spinning it the wrong way and have to go the other way. do a few spins then put the drum back on, you want just a bit of drag. if the drum wont go back on, you expanded it too much and need to retract it

if after adjustment your Ebrake still doesnt work it sounds like a cable issue

The emergency/parking brake operates on a separate cable instead of the regular hydraulic line. Otherwise it would be useless as an emergency brake if your regular brakes failed.

Odds are if its a disc its going to be a similar method to how I described adjusting my BMW's brakes. However you'll need to find an actual repair manual, or forum dedicated to your car to find the method of adjustment.

They make high strength mirror glue available at vatozone, or depending on how the mirror is attached you can simply order another mirror preglued in the attached plastic.

I have an 84 190E with the 4 cylinder. Recently it hs been having some trouble starting in the cold weather. Takes a while to crank and sometimes sputters and dies. Once the engine gets running and you go out for a drive it is fine though.

Until today. Car wouldn't start at all, just kept cranking. Took off the air box and started it without the filter to see if that was the problem. It sputtered to life, coughed out some white smoke, and then died again. Since then it starts (now with air filter on) and just keeps dying right away, seeming to "choke." When I start my car cold and turn the wheel side to side (car is stationary) it feels like the steering lags behind my wheel movement a bit. Power steering fluid is full, could it be the power steering pump? And if so, what would you recommend for action on it right now? As a note, after the car has been running for only a few minutes the steering feels completely normal.
>>
>>16111920
Your battery and or alternator is shot.
>>
>>16112017
You mean the steering feels heavy?

There should be no 'lag' even if your power steering was completely shot, your steering is a complete mechanical connection with hydraulics 'assisting' that motion.

Regardless you might have a leak. or air is in the system.
>>
>>16111698
You could do much worse, so go test drive it.
>>
>>16112040
Not sure really how to describe it. At a certain point while turning the wheel it goes back to feeling normal, as though the power steering catches up. Before that the feeling isn't really heavy, actually more the opposite.

No leaks btw, checked the lines and under the car, and like I said fluid was at the hot full line while engine was hot.
>>
>>16112018
I would also recommend looking at your battery connections if they're loose, at both the terminals and block/alternator and if they're overly corroded.
>>
>>16112173
You might a have a dead zone in your steering.
>>
>>16112051
How reliable would you say they are?
My old ford exploder was great, only issue in 160k miles was the coolant pump being plastic and it melted
>>
>>16112199
as I said, it goes away after the car runs for a couple minutes or even after just turning the wheel back and forth to the point where it feels normal again, so I'm inclined to believe it has to do with the pump getting the fluid to the power steering cylinders. Another thing of note, when I did this at night, my head lights dimmed when it was in the strange "zone" of steering

So I'm looking to get myself a 1991 Skyline GTST Type M for my 21st birthday. I already have a dealer and what not. However, I have one major problem. No company will insure this. and the ones that can won't take me due to me being 21. Never been pulled over, never got a ticket in 7 years of driving.
So my question is: How the fuck do I insure the thing?

what country are you from? here in Canada only a few will do RHD, i have to have my JDM cars with Intact because RBC wont touch my JDM, only my LHD. i had a 1990 GTS-T when i was 21 years old with Intact, i sold it for a slower yacht (1991 Toyota Crown) and he said the rate stays the same under him, could be a 80hp diesel car or a R34 Nur spec its x per month. I'm only 21 and still live with me ma and pa, but I do pretty well in school and work.

I've got my sights on a miata, talked down to 1500$, which I can pay cash from my car savings. I know what I'm looking for and the car I'm interested in is it. Cheapish, manual, not a gas guzzler, and can make my commutes a little more fun, that's all I want.

My parents are going ballistic over me trying to find a new car though (I drive an auto 06 corolla bought from a family member that I also paid cash for), they say it's unsafe, waste of money, I don't know what I'm doing, etc.

I can't just tell them to fuck off because I know they mean well, but holy shit how do I tell them to fuck off?
>>

Not sure how to tell your parents to fuck off, but you will never know what your doing unless you start somewhere. I'm sure you already know this but be smart with your money, I've bought three cars now and the cheapest one has been the best so far (objectively)

Also if you dont know much about cars, learn about them. Learn how an engine works and everything related to it and the car you plan on buying (I dont know shit about power steering because I've only ever owned one car with PS) Look up everything you can about Miatas or whatever you want to buy and be able to tell your parents anything they could ever want to know about said car, even if its only one model of car. Crash test videos are also good to watch if you can find them because they will give you lots of realistic info, it might also show your parents your serious and not just thinking about muh skidz

My coolant is brown. I've drained and refilled it with water several times, and let the car get up to running temp every time before draining again. I just went to drain the water and fill it with actual coolant because it's gonna be below freezing tonight. Shit is STILL BROWN. It's opaque brown, not foamy, just brown. It doesn't have an oily sheen to it or feel oily in my hand, but idk. When I first noticed this, I did an oil change and my oil was fine, no signs of headgasket failure. Replaced the filter and put new oil in. Can oil pressure be too high? Is it possible it's forcing its way past the gasket into the coolant somehow? Is it just rust in my system?
>>
>>16115257
Remove your face as well please.
>>
>>16115670
You probably have rust and scale buildup in the engine's coolant passages and radiator.

You'll have flush, refill with coolant system cleaner/water for a week, flush again and fill up with regular coolant and repeat again 3 months later, and possibly a third time 3 months after that depending on the size of your engine, to clean it thoroughly.

surprisingly I fit fairly well in it so I know I can actually spend time researching it.

What would I need to check for (besides the car not driving straight) to make sure the wheel/what it connects to didn't get fucked in whatever happened
>>
>>16115796
Most of them don't, you can't run it while theres a chance of freezing.

The best you can do for now is buy a back flush kit and run water through the block until it clears, then refill with coolant and then actually try to clean it come spring.
>>
>>16115792
General rule of thumb for German cars that have been made since the mid 90's is that: If you're unable or unwilling, to do maintenance on your own, or poor, then you shouldn't own one.

Ok guys my post 1991 nissan sentra has too much rust underneath it, to lift it up, and I need to bleed my brakes, someone said the front ones are easy, If I want to work on the front left I will turn the tires all the way to the right, and vice versa for the right tire.

Now, my question for the back tires. I have those small ramps, and I was wondering if I put the back tires on the small ramps if I can go underneath and reach up to the bleeder nipple, and do it that way?
>>
>>16115990
There should be jack points that indicated in the owners manual.

If you have so much rust under your Sentra that your jack points are no longer usable, you have bigger problems than having to bleed your brakes.

How come on older carbureted cars have round air filters and modern fuel injected cars have rectangular ones?
>>
>>16122641
Yeah I was planning on taking it to a a place, just wanted to be prepared with some idea of what the issue is. Thanks.
>>
>>16122662
Because FI cars have to have a a lot more equipment taking up more space between the filter and the intake manifold.

Also carbs don't give a shit how much air is going in.
>>
>>16122662
I'm guessing a round cleaner works better when it has to sit on top of a carb. Newer cars have limited underhood space, and thus a rectangular filter works better in these confines. Commercial trucks and heavy equipment still use round cleaners, but they don't have space constraints...

>Do people still understand flash to pass?
Flashing high beams at night is illegal in my state. Just use the turn signal when you are changing lanes to pass. My car's owner's manual does mention "flash to pass" as one of the purposes for using the momentary high beam switch (pull back on the stalk).

As cars go, no one in my state uses "flash to pass" in either day or night driving that I've seen. It's always turn signals. Flash to Pass must be some remnant of old time courtesy that is lost in translation with today's bigger and brighter turn signals. It's not the 1960's with those tiny round turn signal lights.
>>
>>16122823
>Flashing high beams at night is illegal in my state.

The supreme Court just recently defined use of high beam flashing as free speech, in regards of communication to other motorists to warn of police ahead.

Likely that would apply to your state law as well.

I still use flash to pass, or to let a passing truck know they can merge over, or to let someone by.
>>
>>16122859
A buddy of mine received a ticket recently for "improper use of headlights" for flashing his high-beams at passing motorists.

I'm guessing this law is on the books here, to prevent people from running their highs, blinding everyone. In his case, he was ticketed for warning passing motorists, although that wasn't really conveyed by the cop...

Hey /o/. Found a J300 on some property my family owns. I'm looking into rebuilding it myself, does anyone have some links and shit to get me started beyond the process I've already gotten thought out?

My plan currently is:

>Get back out there with a jack to get it up off the ground to get a better look at the frame
>see if I can get the wheels unsiezed (It got partially buried during a flood and has been sitting for at least 20 years) without breaking anything
>pull the rims and get some cheap ass tires on them (I know the owner of the local tireshop and can probably get some tires that are bald so I can at least get it out of there, onto a trailer and down to my house)

After that I'm kinda at a crossroads of what next?

Pull the engine/transmission tear them apart, and hunt down all the missing parts?

Or do I get it torn down and mediablasted first, find out how much material I have left that isn't rusted away?

My dad says it may have been modified to run off LPG but I didn't find any of the necessary stuff that would indicate that happened to this one. He says there should be two of them out there, but I didn't find a second one.

I did find a dodge WD-21 off in the creek itself though.

Do I ACTUALLY have to replace cylinder head bolts when changing a head gasket or is that something they put in the repair manual to cover their asses in the .5% chance the incorrect torque breaks something? I don't care to spend more money than I have to, I just need the car to work and if I can re-use the bolts I will.

It's a low power ford 302 and I was under the impression they're built with such loose tolerances that minor shit like that doesn't really matter. It's not like some over-engineered german car where the whole engine detonates if you sneeze at it.

You pay a percentage of principle and a percentage of interest with each payment. The amount of principle goes up with each payment the amount of interest goes down.

Say you have $100 payments on $1000 the first might be $10 on principle, so after paying $100 you'd still owe $990. Next payment might be $20 in principle taking it down to $970 owed. By the next to last payment you'll owe like $190 and only $10 will go to interest.

At any time you should be able to pay down the principle, and your payment is the same $100 but more of it will go to principle. Of course you can pay of all the principle at any time (verify you can pay early and pay off without penalty before taking any loan)

So I got screwed over when buying my first car. Paid extra for a set of winter rims and tires, turns out the tires are some basically no-name Chinese "Rovelo RWT-768s". I don't trust them at all, but I'm hestitant to buying new tires because of how cheap the car was and how long it will last.

Any experience with these tires? Should I just get another set, used or new? I just don't want to crash and die, or end up paying more for insurance than I would have for tires. Car's RWD if that means much for winter driving.
>>
If I bought a car with collector plates on it and wanted to use it as a daily, can I just go and get regular plates for it, or would there be anything stopping me from doing that?
>>
I'm wanting to buy an aw11 off of Craigslist, but it's a manual and my only experience with those is the short 2 hour session I had in my friend's car. My mother knows how to drive stick but she's a fat whale and will barely fit in the car. The last car I looked at with manual was big enough to fit her as well as myself and the seller, but since the mr2 only has 2 seats that isn't possible.

Also the car is a few hours away, so if it the car turns out to be garbage and not worth buying, how can I lessen the blow of disappointment?

Vibe looks kinda cool, and it's way cheaper in my area, as opposed to the matrix.

They're apparently twins though, why would one be so much cheaper?
>>
>>16127231
Give them a chance, at least. As long as they're otherwise healthy (not too old, no obvious defects) they shouldn't blow up or anything. Worst case scenario they handle like all-seasons and you decide to get better ones anyway.
RWD generally isn't great in the snow, you might find that even with good tires you still have trouble.
>>
>>16124039
If no rust, runs strong, new cvs, paint and body and interior are good then yes. That's pretty much the price of a near mint brat/gl/dl/loyale, for that price it should have been taken care. If it hasn't look for a cheaper one. Just typed all that and remembered that brats are a little bit more rare so take everything I said with a grain of salt

I know you won't have many options for clearance, but check to see if when you press down and shake up and down on the spot where there may have been damage that there isn't too much play or wiggle. clicking at the front end while steering s bad (maybe tie rod/bushings) also turn the wheel hard one direction while stationary, hop out and check for leaky break lines, wet spots, rust spots, dried up and cracked bushings etc.
>>
>>16127984
Thanks for the steering tip, and the pushing on the replaced part thing. Didn't think of that (especially the steering one)
I probably won't be checking with it again for a week or two. So I'll have plenty of time to decide.
At the very worst I'll get my mom's old jeep grand cherokee.
Hopefully if I get that thing it wont break down any more.
Also what's the best place to check the vin number? all the free ones seem to be dogshit, and the original owner got the car used from an auction with the fucked up fender so he didn't really know what's gone on with it.

I'm looking at winter tire packages. A tire shop near me has $50 off if you install the tires yourself (I'll get getting a set of wheels as well, so they'll provide the tires mounted and balanced on the wheels). I've replaced a tire a couple of times on my car when I had a flat and I needed to put the spare on.

Back then I just used the lug wrench in the car's spare tire kit to tighten the bolts. But I don't really know if I tightened them enough or whatever. Now I'm a bit paranoid; should I just do the install myself and save $50?

I tightened them pretty much as hard as I could without like, stamping down on the lug wrench. I don't have a torque gun or anything like that.

Is the an optimal orientation for cone intakes?
They're always placed with one of their sides facing away from the intake path.
It seems like it would be better to place it with the cap facing the intake path just so that you don't starve one side of the filter.

Recently replaced the rear pads and rotors on my wife's 2007 civic, everything was perfect for a week and then she said the brakes have become noisy. I test drove it this evening and found out that one side makes a chirping scrape noise when touching the brake pedal. It changes based on speed and it is fairly loud, must be the rotor. I will have to disassemble it tomorrow, but what sort of error could have caused this problem in 500km? Also, can I replace the brakes on just one side when both sides were changed recently?

>>

>>
>>16133227
>Semantics.

As an engine is an air pump, the pistons create a vacuum and air fills that vacuum mixed with fuel.

Vacuums suck and not blow if Im not mistaken.
>>
>>16130823
Is the belt squealing? How old is the belt tensioner?
>>
>>16133431
I can't hear the belt squealing, the idler pulley is new but the belt tensioner is most likely stock, 2002 Dodge neon.

It's about a 2" play if I was to guess just from driving.

I already ordered a steering and suspension kit though, it's not expensive and probably needs new ball joints anyways. What else could it be?
>>
>>16133423
You are mistaken, and that's why I said "technically".
Vacuums don't do anything, it's the higher pressure of the atmosphere that pushes air into the cylinder.

If you added a turbocharger (or supercharger) to a car but did not modify the fuel injection, would it still increase power due to more oxygen or is the greater pressure/oxygen only useful if you also increase the amount of fuel injected?

(Disregard all other real-life limiting factors, use of inter-coolers, etc. for this question).
>>
>>16135227
It depends on your fuel injection system, if it could onject more fuel you would get more power out of your engine.
>>
>>16135227

Adding forced induction without altering the fuel system will only damage your engine. The increased air/fuel mixture will mean yor engine is running "lean" and along with a resulting lack of power output, this can lead to excessively high combustion chamber temperatures, which in turn can result in pistons melting and conrods vacating the engine due to pre-ignition.

Your fuel system will need to be altered to work with the induction system. Essentially the only thing it needs to do is inject an amount of fuel synonymous with the extra air. This may be possible with your current setup, but as you have a naturally aspirated engine, probably not. You'll likely have to replace injectors and fuel pumps. And of course the ECU will need a remap to control all of this.
>>
>>16135304
>>16135247

Thanks guys, but to clarify this is a completely hypothetical "thought experiment", so no damage to the engine or anything.

Just

"Does increasing the amount of air without increasing the amount of fuel increase power" if everything else magically works soundly.

You can think of it as being outside of a car even.
>>
>>16133263
It wasn't metal on metal sounding. I pulled the wheel off and found that the screws that hold the rotor in place protruding a tiny amount, enough to have left a small mark in the wheel. I removed the screws and checked whether the pads were damaged before test driving. I also checked to see whether the other side of the car had the same problem, it didn't... The sound is gone, so I hope the problem has been solved. Stupid mistake but I guess I learned something.
>>
>>16134948
Yes and likely no
>>
>>16135317
If you would get over the limit of your injectors and the ECU would allow this you would get a little bit more power but the lean mixture and high pressure would kill your engine.
>>

No. As long as nothing gets between the wheel and the hub and it's torqued properly, the plane and center of rotation won't change so the balance won't either
