I've been looking around at late 90's turbo saab's as a fucking around car and was wondering what the general consensus on /o/ is about them the only thing I've found is that they are pricy to fix is there anything else to look out for /o/?
>>
t25 turbos dont last very long 120k or so. i would go with a 9000 manual aero as it will have the mitsu td04 turbo. With a tune and exhaust you are approaching 300hp.

The 900s are fine, not as well engineered as the 9000, but they are o.k. If you do decide to get the 900 get the SE. 98 would be the best year as it has the suspension improvements from the 9-3.. You could also get a 99 9-3.

If you are relying on a mechanic, i would not get a SAAB, unless you know of a good SAAB specialist. There are enough slightly different things about them to confuse your average mechanic.

pretty fucking annoying to work on too

1997 900SE Turbo coupe Talladega edition owner here. I have no idea what the S and SE stands for. Could you enlighten me?

This all of this. I had a 9000 and miss it a lot. If you do get a 9000 get one with out the ETS (Electronic Throttle System). I had one with the ETS and it gave me lots of issues (the ets did). I knew of a Saab specialist so I was able to get hard to find parts.
>>
>>16104192
the 1994-1998 saab 900s had three trim levels
i or base, s and se.
In additional to different interior and wheels and a few other cosmetic things they pretty much had these engines:
i: 2.0 no turbo
s: 2.3 no turbo
se 2.0 turbo. (some had a v6).

The talladega has special interior and air damn and spoiler to commerate a set of saab 900s going around the track for 200hours(stops for fuel, routine maintance, and driver changes) averaging 140 or so mph.
>>
>>16104326
Oh, that's it. Thanks! I know about the special design details for the Talladega ed. (also painted side mirrors). Mine has Aero body kit btw. I'm wondering if the Aero kit was an option for non Talladega ed. and was it an option for all the world's markets. I know that NG900 Aero's were produced only for Italian market and that my car is from Italy, concluding from the service history and that the manuals are in Italian. I'm also wondering if there was any technical differences. My car seems relatively stiff although suspension seems to be stock.

I'm not particularly keen on the late 90s Saabs, there were a few too many LPTs and a lot of the other features on them liked to break. However, if you can find yourself a 9000 Aero in manual, you'll have something super-nice. The OG 9-3 and 9-5 from 1999 to 2002 are futzy, but more stuff is available for them. NG 9-3s are way easier to deal with but then you're stuck with Ecotecs. Avoid NG 900s, 9000s, OG9-3s, and 9-5s with the V6, that thing is a much bigger bitch than some people describe it as.

Also, define "fucking around car", since most Saabs are not for beating on or abusing.

I'm mostly looking for a little turbo car to have some fun with, go fast and such for cheep(around 1500$) my dd is a 92 s10 and while I haven't had any real problems with it I just want a car that will actually go highway speeds and is fun to drive

For 1500 you are looking at:
Saab 9000 cse.
Ng900
Might be able to find an og9-3
Might be able to fine og900

9000 2.turbo issues will be the t25 turbo. Not to expensive to replace. The world windshield washer tank will leak. Easy to fix.
Ng900 again the t25 turbo, besides that not to many issues.
Og9-3. The 1999 has the 900og engine so t25 turbos. 2000-20002 Se has a good td04 turbo... But if oil was not changed every 6k with synthetic it could have sludge.

Og900.. the transmission s needs its pinion bearing replaced every 120k to 200k

You might just want to post what you are looking at and myself or another saabfag will say yeah or nay.

I have a 92 turbo 900 vert, a 2001 9-3se, and a 9000 cse. All have over 230,000 miles. I got the 900 and 9-3 with about 140k on them. They have been fairly trouble free. The 9000 had about 210k miles when I got it, maintenance records folder is 2" thick.

What a coincidence.

I'm looking to get my first car soon and for some reason I really want a SAAB hatchback. Which ones would be best to keep an eye out for? Also, any tips on SAABs in general would be much appreciated. If it helps, I live in Europe (UK).

So which one of 900's? I'd look only for 1997/1998 2.0T coupes (Talladega edition in best case) if NG and if OG, well you should look on your available finances then. I guess you should start with that.
What's the best craigslist site in your area?
>>
>>16113903
There are a couple of sites that I've been looking on to get an idea of what's out there (autotrader, gumtree etc). My budget is fairly flexible at around £1500ish but from what I've seen, I shouldn't have to spend nearly that much.

It's a shame this one has just been sold, it fits that description pretty well and it'll be hard to find that kind of mileage for that price again.

>>
>>16114010
>from what I've seen, I shouldn't have to spend nearly that much
I'd recommend you to avoid the very cheapest end. It might not turn out as cheap afterall. Figure out what is that you like and search for one in a decent condition so you could keep it that way.
So you are looking only at NG900?
>>
>>16099354
any 90s saab that's not a low mileage model (as in <80k) is going to need a new turbo, have fun.
>>
>>16114055
I'll definitely be wanting to get a car that's in a reasonable condition so I definitely wont be getting the cheapest I can find.

>So you are looking only at NG900?
Not necessarily. I need to learn more about SAABs in general but I've so far been looking at any of the 5 door coupes to keep my options more open.
>>
>>16113903
Op here I've been looking at is 97/98 900se hatchbacks aswell and have been thinking about one of them
>>
>>16114082
Why do I keep hearing that here? <260k km on my car and the turbo is still fine.

>>16114088
>5 door coupes
Mkay..
I was looking for an OG900 coupe (not so cheap in left side wheel EU) as my first car but then I found the perfect NG in superb condition and I'm happy with it.
Damn those UK sites are hard to navigate. That other one even asked for ZIP to search. I'm happy that mobile.de exists but there's nothing for UK.
Just keep looking for new ads cause those are relatively rare cars.
>>
>>16114088
>>16114190
Actually, either 5 or 3 door would be fine.

Coupes looks better, are more aerodynamic, weighs less and are more comfortable unless you don't have a baby and if you're the driver. I find it easier to just lift the front seat for small everyday baggage like groceries instead of using another door for it.
>>
Not op but which 2 door Saab will make me a sikk kunt while being comfortable. Viggens are impossible to find so not those.

Got an 89 900 turbo with 125k for 2500. Needed a new radiator and that's it, runs great, very unique, and lots of fun. I'd recommend either a c900 or either gen 9000. Saabs can go forever if you treat them right.

tfw my replacement Aero have a sintered clutch but the retards that owned the car before me must've mounted the flywheel wrong or burnt the clutch so it shakes like fucking crazy when engaging the clutch.
Doesn't help when the engine mounts are worn as on top of it.

1997 900SE (2.0T). It's time for the first oil change. Any suggesions for the best oil and filter? I'm living in northern europe. The average annual air temperature is +5.9ºC (42.6ºF).
>>
>>16119979
I use Mobil1 0W-40 precisely because of temperatures like that, because Chicago. Best filters are Mann and Mobil1, stuff like Purolater is okay too. How's your air filter looking?

Apparently Mobil1 filters aren't in my country. But there is MANN.
Will change the air filter too. Any specific recommendations for that?

It's not fully synthetic though.
It's sold in Germany as semi-synthetic because it uses additives.

Is it the 210HP Aero version the 200HP?

It says that it's fully synthetic on the dealers site. I'm from Latvia.

>>16120262
0W-40 will work better in those average temps if you can get ahold of it. Make sure it's 100% full synthetic. As for air filters, MANN works well as well, and (no memes please) K&N is actually fairly decent for the sake of having something sort of reuseable. For a 900 like that, though, it doesn't matter as much as my pic related does.

How much room are in 99-07 Saabs? I'm pretty tall and I want to be able to fit gear in the back as well.
>>
>>16120597
which models?

Gen 1 9-5 sedans have no problem fitting 4 17' wheels in the trunk, while Gen 1 9-5 estates can't unless you put them vertically since they have sub and cd changer on the sides.
Gen 2, dunno

Gen 1 9-3 have overall smaller trunk, but sedan and estate

Gen 2 are bigger but you can only fit 3 17' wheels in the sedan, don't know about hte estate though.

In a 9-5 you're not tall enough to hit the roof, period.
Gen 2 9-3 have less room, but not by much.
>>
>>16119979
I use rotella t-6 with a pure one pl20195
The pl20195is slightly larger than stock so you will need to ad about 1/4 quartzite oil
>>
>>16120615
Thanks for the detailed response. I've been looking at the first generation 9-5 wagons and it sounds like it fits me and my needs.
>>
>>16120583
What about BOSCH filters?
And what do I see in your picture?
>>
Why are these cars such pain in the dicks to work on?
>>
For performance reasons should i search for a I4 or v6 saab 9-3.
Is it like hondas where theres more support for the i4?
>>
>>16120656
I have one now as of recently and the storage is what I wanted.
Mine are fitted with everything, guardrails, cover, plastic mat, net etc. and when I realized I had to have one tire in the backseat, I knew I had to stack them vertically though then I wouldn't be able to see back.
2003 and 2004 are probably 99.9999% similar so trunk isn't affected part from the different electronic stuff like amp and cd changer.

Here I could fit two laying down, but the cover bracket takes up just enough that i couldn't fit two on top as well without letting all air out. and it was like 2-3cm that differed.

>>16120675
They are?

>>16120676
Depends on where you live.
In Sweden the 9-3 Aero is an i4 with 210HP (stage one tune for $180 is 250HP at 388Nm).
>>
>>16120675
They are not
>>16120676
Assuming you mean 03+ the ecotec has more support, but it's cheaper to get up to 400 hp out if the 2.8
