It's Civ 5 2.0 with a little more complexity and strategy. Mainly there are civics and districts that add flavor and ai civs have agendas. Overall it feels better than civ 5 but not much. Also the barbarians are outrageous in this one.

most of the places we go are not built for 53'
they never planned for expansion and by the time it became a problem it became too costly.
Denver isnt alone in this nonsense. ive been to places where you have to line up and go over two curbs before the back is remotely close to the dock. and one place in laredo i had to take my mudflaps off before i backed or id have lost em.
>>
>>16097203
Not at all, but that doesn't stop our dispatch from sending us to places like this. I'm sure I've already told this, but we've had several drivers get loads going to houses in tiny residential neighborhoods.

>>16097215
The least they could do is get another company with box trucks to deliver this shit. Swift can usually T-Call at Conway, their pups would be far better suited for this arduous delivery.
>>
>>16097253
>get another company with box trucks
but muh profits!
it should be mandatory for anything in cali thats for sure.

my personal favorite was having to back a mile down to deliver the appliances to a being built apartment complex, the place didnt even exist on maps yet and the directions i got were
"oh yeah, just keep going straight, they finished the asphalt about an hour ago. ill go park in the finished driveway."
close runner up was a printer delivery in california where i had to drive between two apartments and park the nose of my truck dangling over a ravine so they could man handle the rolls out. then back all the way out to the main street.
>>
>>16097275
Yeah see that is absolutely ridiculous, I wish dispatchers were required to have OTR experience to understand some of this shit is just unsafe.

Had a doc appt today, need to be there by 1pm at the latest so said I'll come in and I will leave around noon. So I figured Tuesday I will just run to the airport and be done by 10am. Of course I'm about to leave for the airport and dude comes out so I hop on his route all late and go drag ass for a few hours. Brought like half the truck back. Good times.
>>
>>16097424
having knowledge of what the truckers life is like is actually grounds to be fired in most of the big companies. they don't want you identifying with the driver. as it cuts profits. not even joking
>>
>>16097478

This. I remember when I first started, I had a Mon-Fri dispatcher that was cool as shit, and then the weekend guy was nothing but an asshole. I was dropping off a load on Friday and there was a pick up there that was to be dropped off the next day on Saturday. I asked my dispatcher if he could find me something else that holds me over the weekend so I don't got to deal with the weekend dispatcher unless there's an emergency. So he booked me on a load about 100 miles away, and pushed the pick up appointment there a few hours back for another driver to get picked up. Come the next week he was fired over it. I felt so terrible. I had the guy's personal number and apologized for weeks. But he's now a driver for Crete and doing good. Dispatcher life sucks dick. You can't please the drivers and you can't please management. Management fucks up, you're to blame for not fixing it. Driver fucks up, you're to blame for putting him on the load to begin with. It's the shittiest job you can have.

>>
>>16101788
The train thing is what really gets me. They can't even run those without conductors. And airplanes basically fly themselves but still need a minimum of two highly trained people to pilot them. Neither of those have to deal with anything near the traffic and unpredictability of the roads.

If anything, the autopilot stuff will make driving even easier but as long as people are still driving their cars on the same roads as the trucks, I don't think they will be run without somebody inside them. It's just too much of a liability.

Start by not getting a CDL.
>>
>>16105929
Start where then?
>>
>>16105822
There are local CDL jobs where you can be home every night, even regular hours. I wouldn't say it would be a "career" job though. Probably wouldn't make over $25/hr.

I heard Trach tucks are pretty good if you can deal with garbage. Supposedly you get paid a certain amount a day and get your route. How fast you complete your route and get off work is up to you.

I average right around $25/hr. A little more or a little less depending on the week and how many hours I get stuck there. Our bulk guys make $26 something I think, maybe $27 now with raises. And we are in FL with no state income tax.

Plus anywhere that is straight hourly, most driving jobs are ~50hrs a week so even at $22/hr, you will end up at like $25avg with OT.
>>
Been a Tyson yard driver for almost a year now.

My wife is Korean, she doesn't work and I'm starting to tread debt because I only make $13 an hour, we both want to get out of Missouri, I'm thinking about getting my class A when I get my income tax back.

Are there any companies that will hire fresh drivers or where do I even get experience, will my yard experience count with most employers? Everyone seems to want 2 years or more.

Also, do any of you guys carry guns?
>>
>>16107126
There are tons of companies that will hire people right out of school with a Class A, but lots of it is OTR. What were you doing in the yard without a Class A? Trailer jockey deal? If so, I'm suprised they let you do that without a Class A.

Our warehouse guys don't have Class A licenses but they do pull the trucks around the yard. They are responsible for a whole lot of dings and scratches.
>>
>>16107170
Yeah, no CDL required because it's a jockey like in the OP picture, I thought I'd need a license too but everyone said I don't.

I've never scratched up or dinged a trailer yet, the most damage I've done was I pulled one trailer and bent a dock lock because the idiots inside didn't push it back down when they said they did.

Most every trailer on our lot is a reefer too.
>>
>>16107192
I mean that will def look better on your resumé than having never driven a truck. Any company that hires you will still want to put you through their training but if you know what you're doing then you should get through it faster.
>>
>>16107199

Better than $13/hr after training. If you do OTR, it will take a bit to learn the tricks but by the end of your first year you should be doing a little better. Wherever you go (local or OTR) you are going to get the shitty routes until you have some seniority. But so many of these companies have high turnover so it doesn't take long.
>>
>>16107229
Thanks for your help, I appreciate it man
>>
>>16107262
You should talk to your boss and ask if there is a way that you could possibly test in one of their trucks.

Like a year or two ago, we were short on drivers and they ended up letting some merchandisers and warehouse dudes study for the test on their own time and then letting them drive the trucks and train with their permits and then test in the Pepsi trucks.

Most of them quit within a month or two of getting their Class A. I don't think they will do that again at our location.
>>
>>16107281
I asked last week but they said no to using a company truck for the test, they also never got the information back to me about the Tyson CDL program they have and when I asked today they said they'd look into it and get me the stuff but I doubt they will because I also asked for it a month ago

I might go in early tomorrow and go straight to HR and see if they can't give me something because my managers are practically useless

There is a local place that will rent me a truck for about $75 when I go to take my test
>>
>>16107310
That's straight then, if you can study for the test on your own and get your permit, then just keep driving the Tyson trucks for a couple months until you are ready for the test, rent the thing for $75 and you should have no problem with the road and skills test as long as you study up for the pre-trip.
>>
>>16107126
I'm pretty sure Tyson does. I'm thinking about going to work with them. Those who KWs are nice looking.

Brand new guys are a pain in the ass and slow you down. But after the first week or two, they can actually help you get done earlier. Only problem is 75% are going to be lazy and/or stupid and fuck stuff up that I have to fix so I would rather just do it myself. There are a few veteran dudes I don't mind when they ride along but aside from that I would rather work by myself.

>company fell for the International meme

Here I sit waiting for my turn in the shop. Not sure exactly what's wrong, there's a strong air leak above my front driver's airbag. It's causing the antilock brakes to come on when shifting in low and middle gears making safe driving impossible. I can only drive it with off road turned on, which seems to stop the abs hiccups. Anyone know what's up? Air is leaking from the middle of the circle in pic, starts leaking when I start driving and will continue to leak hard 10-15 mins after I shut the engine off.
>>
>>16108315
With our company the benefits of training were the trainer didn't drive at all for a couple of weeks but still got paid for the miles the trainee did, then team miles for 3-5 weeks, and finally after the trainee got his truck his trainer got 2 cents for the miles the trainee did in his truck for three months and then 1 cent for the 3-6 month period. So if you got 3 or 4 trainees going in their own trucks at the same time it'd be a nice little pay bump.

What are the chances of someone who just got their CDL landing a job as a lone company driver?
Every job listing I see wants 1-2 years of experience or new drivers required to run as a team with someone else.
I'm too much of a sperg to sit in the same truck with some stranger for an extended period of time.

I actually handled that yesterday. Dispatch and Peterbilt both got tore new assholes. We haven't been able to make any money on this truck since we got on it two months ago and since it isn't ours we have decided if it's not fixed today we're letting the owner have it back, not my circus not my fucking monkeys anymore.

We have no layover pay because Prime's bullshit owner-op policies with having company drivers on the truck. So we're screwed. At least we got them to cover the hotel.

Between my faggot ass neckbeard hamplanet aspie co-driver who complains non-stop about everything and dispatch and the owner of the truck I've about had it with truck driving. My contract is up I can leave.

Yeah well we thought we were going to make a ton of money and ended up breaking down every other week and all the weeks we ran we got shitty sub-1.00/mi loads so I've about had it with this truck they can shove it up where the sun doesn't shine.

It was a lot truck. Next truck will be 295" instead of 280" and I will probably put higher stacks on too. Everytime I thought about getting bigger ones I conveniently ended up going under an 11 ft bridge.

But if I'm going to do it I'll do it right. Not just getting tips. But a full stainless exhaust with 90 degree elbows. About 4500$. I'm almost half done with this truck. I will not be buying drive tires for it. So I'm not customizing anymore.

I had no part in the loading process. Trailers are pre-loaded when the drivers arrive at the yard to head south. In any case, it was secured, what you see is only the very last stack. Lumber/plywood in reefers is pretty common, and it's the company's decision.

>Leave lots of room in front
>Car sees it as an invitation, fills the gap

Nothing you can do about that. Some will merge less than 30ft in front.

Defense environment? Fucking cake as far as job difficulty goes. You are probably restricted to a base or two, occasional convoy.

Major differences: You can die from war related incidents. Granted, if you sign on the dotted line you know what you are getting into.

Get comfortable with gravel road stretches.

Get used to being one of a handful of CDL dudes. So change your idea of brotherhood.

Past that? Fucking cake. Military bases are made to be easy on logistics. the actual Act of doing your job is no biggie. Its the culture shock for some people that is an issue.

If you are young, divorced or bored? Try it once. See if you like it. Worst case scenario? You have no living expenses and get paid more than you would normally do so. Play it right and you get your first 80k tax free overseas in a warzone if thats still a thing.

I've known a few old timers who have been doing CDL as overseas contractors in "hot" areas for like the past 10 years when I was deployed a few years back. They were sort of the epitome of a steryotype, but loved what they did and the whores they fucked. So take it as you will.

dont be a bitch man. Do it. Haha, worst attempt at peer pressure ever.

But seriously

Look up "Afghanistan Iraq CDL" trucker etc.

One final bit of advice. Dont fuck around, dont go there thinking your employer is your friend. You are treated as a disposable asset. Make sure your contract is tight and you are fine. Past that, here are your big names.

DyneCorp
KBR

Just keep digging, search for stories, you will find what you need. my earlier link is also good.

If you want to take a different route of risk and help burn the earth to the ground, get a job working the oil fields with your CDL.

http://www.frackingjobs.co/oilfield-vs-over-the-road-driving-jobs/
https://www.kbr.com/careers

For me. Honestly, fuck real life. I dont care for most people, I dont like most common work. I like the spaces in between, and to be on the "outside". I'll let everyone else consume what I helped make, and form their criticisms later.

I'm a company Prime driver, solo. My truck has only been in the shop for longer than a day once. I got breakdown pay for it too. I'm pretty sure lease guys get breakdown pay too, so not sure why you aren't.

I remember something you said about its not your or Primes truck, someone else owns it and you drive for them? If that's true, it's the biggest fuck up, I haven't ever heard of someone being happy in that situation. You need to stop bitching to Prime about it, and bitch to the truck owner.

Some places train you to use the horn when you reverse, as a warning.

They do it for van drivers where I work. Nobody gives a fuck, and they just back up whenever and rely on the reverse buzzer to tell people to GTFO.
Nobody's been squashed yet.
>>
>>16129709
Maybe. His trainer was definitely an asshole, though.

Plus, I think anyone who doesn't have enough common sense not to blow the AIR HORN in a place where people are sleeping, deserves whatever comes to them

What're your thoughts on Volvo trucks? Like the new ones from 2013-14 onward? Im driving one right now and it's quite comfy but I cannot sleep in it when the engine is running. It also seems like if I were to crash it, I would become road meat as everything's made from plastic

Trucking companies that don't suck to drive for and GO, after almost 2 weeks of being stuck broke down I'm going to probably leave Prime. I have tanker endorsement and an ankle that works most of the time so flatbed is probably not a good idea right now.

>Want

-Hometime, I haven't had legitimate hometime vacation since January. I like to run 4 weeks on and maybe a couple days off
-Money not just peanuts
-Would consider local job in Florida but won't rule out OTR is the money is there and they will let me run to Alaska and Canada

>Do not want

-Daycab reefer
-Automatic transmission, I drive with steel-toe steel-shank boots not Victoria's Secret high heels
-Any Paccar truck with an MX13 unless it's a Kenworth T680
-I would like to stay away from Swift or any of the mega carriers
-No governed crap I want to have all of my balls

I have

-Flawless CSA and perfect driving record
-Tanker endorsement
-Valid Class A Florida CDL
-1 full year experience plus winter
-Broken ankle in February which leads me to my next question

If I go after Prime for my injury would I get blackballed from the industry? I kind of like trucking but the offer they gave me was a little more than a sign-on bonus at some carriers and I know 20 or 30 years down the road this is going to be trouble. I have days I can barely walk and I should probably lawyer up.
