The Toudou School is based on Spoon's affinity for FF Hondas. Civics are respected and used because they're cheap, have one of the largest aftermarkets in the world and many circuits in Japan hold one-make race series that use Honda Civics which allow younger drivers who can't afford anything better to get into racing (IIRC, one of the Todou School guys says something about a series near them that they race in). It's just that in the west, we see them as nothing but ricing machines.

you can if you drop engine type or displacement.
there is a reason its a 1.5L turbo on the civic now rather than the 2.0L engine with a turbo. less weight used the less the size has to be.
