>>16072040
Land Rover Defender is something I'd have when I become a thousandaire. A tuned up Defender with a Ramjet 502 to save me on gas and get that nice Chevy whirl.

The Merc G-class in the 80s was also legendary but they have insane maintainence fees (compared to a Jag - imagine that!). This shows as they depreciated at twice the rate of the similarly priced Defenders of the same year.

>>16072092
If it weren't for the abhorrent safety rating and low speed tuner, I'd've gotten this instead of my current 5th gen.

This. It's fighting every other little thing that goes wrong, especially if you have a relatively unmolested or poorly maintained pre-Chrysler XJ/MJ with all the original equipment, or even straight replacements of it. Cooling system sucks donkey dick until the Chrysler years.

I've had ten of them, none of that has happened to mine. Sure the cooling system is "”"""""shit""""""" if you don't know how to maintain it. Which just means change the god damn coolant once in a while, and make sure your fan clutch is working properly.
>>

The "Cowboy Bob" was the 4x4 version with a shortened bed.

A small amount of these Subaru were imported to Russia in the early 2000's.
Like many others the one pictured was fitted with 1.5L Toyota 1C turbo diesel engine upon arriving in Russia.
The original engines were small high revving 1.3l gasoline.
The gearbox was a 3 speed manual with high and low range.

Subaru tried to compete with mini trucks, small pickups, and small 4x4s at the same time. But the quirkiness of the engine and gearbox resulted in poor sales.

Never drove one of those Datsuns specifically, but lack of power steering only really matters when parking. And if you get a steering ball thing it gets much lighter.

Also, more important is that the wheels return to center on their own after you exit a curve.
I had a Lan Drover that didn't do this and it was a bitch to drive.

I own an NH Pajero, it's honestly not the best car (dear god is it slow), but I've been working on gradually making it as reliable as possible.

I can't honestly think of a 4WD that's actually pleasant to work on, though - there's always something that seems to get in the way of a job that would normally be easy or straightforwards on a normal car.

I find it has the most utility. Can put shit in the back, can roll the window down and hang wood out, can fold the gate down and put bigger shit there, can fold the seats and sleep in it.

In the US you can easily get a diesel RHD Jeep because that's what mail jeeps were forever and many still are. Other than that, a precious few CJs in the late 80s and some Cherokees in the mid-2000s. YMMV
>>
>>16079035
There was at one early point a low displacement turbo-diesel. The XJ is reliable. Newer ones moreso, but they're more... Chrysler-y. Not in a way I really like. I prefer the OBD-I era. The 4.0L straight six is however dead-ass reliable (carry a spare crank sensor though) and considered the engine to have for the XJ for good reason. They're stout as fuck, reliable, have no expected end of life mileage. It'll run forever. Gas mileage isn't great. They're known to leak. Good news is all the lemons are dead so anything that isn't a salvaged block or severely overheated can be expected to run well.

Everything else can rattle apart for sure. THe nice thing about the XJ is that it'd dead-nuts simple on the inside without being a TJ so all your fixes are easy. But the main thing is that here in the US, every tenth person still owns one, and there's twenty in every junkyard. Parts flow like water. Somebody's even made an arduino Renix scan tool. You can buy one for parts with a thrown rod for $400 and a running one for just twice that. A running 4x4 in need of a bit of minor electrical, body or interior work can be had for $1,500. There's really no reason not to at some point. I have no clue how it is in Ausland.

American cars in general are pretty uncommon - the Discovery is a more common car than the XJ, and parts for American cars tend to be more expensive than the Jap stuff of a comparable era.
>>
>>16079120
Yeah, the main draw in finding a RHD XJ or even MJ overseas is that you're already an enthusiast and prepared to take care of it without easy and immediate access to both a massive network of salvage yards and huge forums of murricans that will FedEx you stuff off of their own wrecks for a couple bucks. I'd consider it. Trim would be a nightmare to replace.

You can make your Pajero faster with two weird tips. Click here to find out how!

You really can make it faster though. Honest.
It involves shimming the waste gate actuator, and turning a screw on the injection pump.
>>
>>16079261
I've already got a boost controller on it set to ~14 psi, but you're right, the pump really does need some proper tuning done. I'm saving up for a 2.5 or 2.75" exhaust for it before I do that, though.
>>
>>16079305
>proper tuning
Literally all you do is undo the diaphragm on top of the pump, an turn the boost compensating screw so it points forward (it's got a tapered tip). That's it. There's not really any perameters on the mechanical pumps you can "tune".
I'd advise you don't start playing with anything until you have a pyro gauge set up to read EGTs in the exhaust manifold.
>>
>>16079828
If it were as simple as that, I'd have done it already.

The 4D56 pump has main fueling and boost-compensated fueling adjustment screws, and I intend to refurbish and shim my injectors for higher crack pressure, so the timing will need to changed, too.

Unfortunately no one I work with knows much about diesel tuning, so I'd rather send it to a professional to have it done properly. I'll be getting a pyro gauge along with the new exhaust, and probably shim or block the manifold pressure relief valve so I can run even more boost.

Yes. Reliable to hell and back again. However, it does give up crash safety rating and comfort. Shouldn't be an issue since you can't go over 125kmph without burning all your gas in one hour.

>>16082485
Not really the reason. Modern F-150s are NOT like the old F-150s. Ford lost its trucc touch when they discontinued the [actual] Ranger/Explorer in 2011. This is the same with Silverados and Rams.
Honestly, other than Nissan, all modern pick 'em 'upp truccs are kinda the same in terms of reliability, price, and everything else. As someone who had an F-150, Frontier, and 1500 for a few weeks.

Yes and no. The lack of insulation is annoying both in the winter and summer. The delightable 90s feel kinda gets old - especially if you want to take a modern grille out on the town. Bench seats are a huge plus but changing gears with two other guys in the front seat is always slightly awkward.
The suspension is tuned to an awkward setting that's inbetween city and rock climbing so if you get coils, i would play around with the torsion until you get it comfortable (though, i think they mainly came in leaf springs so uhh). You could always just get used to it, though.

The engine and transmission were reliable but their connecting parts were not as stable. Carry a package of zipties and bolts in your cab to fix certain things on the spot. Vacuum tubes, rubber protectors, etc.

Also, if the F-150 is older than TayTay, I wouldn't get it, personally. They're reliable but not THAT reliable.

Safety ratings are all based on impact with an immovable object rather than with some other vehicle. Ask any EMT. In an accident, the biggest vehicle wins.
>>
>>16083409
>>16083409
The heaviest vehicles win*. Also, the F-150 has solid steel frames as opposed to aluminium so they normally withstand the impact of frontal blows causing the other vehicle to crumple (different if you ram it into a brick wall).

You're right about this for front ended collisions. Side collisions when you're turning and someone rams (probably driving one, too) into you going 60 would probably end your life in an old 90s F-150. This is also important in rollovers which should be addressed by buying a rollover bar if you're that worried. Though both are improbable if you're not a full fledged mong, the side safety rating was something I considered when I got muh trucc.
>>
>>16083077
>all modern pick 'em 'upp truccs are kinda the same in terms of reliability, price, and everything else

Common rail diesel is something to avoid if you can, though. Even if you look after it the injectors will reliably shit the bed, or the injector seals will go, releasing straight up carbon into the engine in some or losing a lot of compression in others.

> Isn't that the number one thing to NOT fuck up on Diesels?

Common rail diesels (CRD) use extremely high pressure direct injection, which requires precisely manufactured, high-tech injectors to function. Older diesel injectors pretty much boiled down to a pin and a spring, new ones have solenoids or piezo actuators that control the injection duty cycle.

EGR systems and (on older CRD diesels) variable vane turbos are also not the best for reliability, either.

Honestly, Toyota reliability has been a shit meme ever since Hyundai stepped up their game in the mid/late 2000s. Stick with your burgertrucks, from what I've seen they're simple and cheap to fix compared to Jap shit.

Oh I actually didn't know that. I've never actually seen a modern diesel vehicle outside of non-tunable, large capacity work truccs or weird luxury crossovers that take diesel for some reason (bluetek can fuk off).
Why do they even use high pressure injection? if the point is to increase power and save gas, wouldn't it be less complex to just turbo their low displacement engines? volvo started doing that with their diesels (and then gasoline) 2.2l I4s and can pump out something insane like 220hp.
Then everyone else started copying them like my Beem X3 that's twin turbo and pops 250hp for a 2litre I4 gasoline. I kinda regret this buy but it's good to cruise around as a shuttlecraft.

Toyota being shit can't be a total meme. Tacos and Tundras are probably the only modern trucc i'd buy due to their simplicity. I don't think they've dropped in reliability more (relatively) to all the modern "sleek" vehicles anyway.
Nip truccs have more murican built parts than Mexican "US" owned GM/Ford/(sometimes) Chryslers.

>>16083701
We talked to at least two dealerships in Monterrey who all had 2014 crew cabs for under $7500 CAD for diesel rated. The importing and potential to fail CA emissions / safety regulations (that could've cost anywhere from $0 to $5000) made us not go for it. Plus the whole $600 plane ticket and GOING to mexico in the first place is a real turnoff.
though, my friend was going to come with me and get something like 200 bars of xanax since they have weird pharmacists. fuck that he's going in his own hilux if he was doing that.
>>
>>16083775
>Why do they even use high pressure injection?

Emissions. By using a higher pressure, it allows them to directly inject diesel into the combustion chamber instead of using a small swirl chamber, thus reducing NOx emissions, among other things.

Sure, they also produce way more power due to having far superior combustion control (some diesels can now inject up to 8 times during one combustion cycle) and faster spooling turbos, and the fuel economy is improved as well, but emissions requirements are the one that, BY LAW, a manufacturer has to meet.

Since there's such a demand for diesels (or there was, before VW fucked up), manufacturers have no choice but to push all this new technology down consumers throats, even if it's unreliable or ridiculously over-engineered.

>so turbo is probably the best thing you could do for an engine instead of this unreliable high pressure injection
Not really - the advantage of CRD over IDI (indirect injection, the old style of diesel that gave us bulletproof engines) is that for roughly the same amount of boost, you're going to be making a fair bit more power, all while doing it more efficiently and cleaner than IDI. You can't run too much boost without running into high NOx emissions, either.

Old-style diesel just isn't good enough to meet industry requirements, no matter how much boost you throw at it.

Plus you have so much asian/ US / south american market handoffs that Europe rarely touches you. why no toyota shilling, though? whenever i think old, first gen 4runner, I think of an Australian mesa

Old style Diesel is also notoriously reliable and those old F-xxx series are still running at 400k with a stock engine. Though, they do burn gas at an atrocious rate since they were never targeted to anyone living more urban than suburban.

I just looked this shit up and looks like Daimler had a few patents on beginning stage Indirect Diesel engines that powers most of their Bluetecc vehicles. They seemed to have been much ahead of the ball compared to VW AG when setting lower NOx levels and maximising fuel rating.
Funfact: they've done this so "efficiently" that the ONLY manual Benz vehicle cheaper than $150 000 in Canada is their SLK series. Everything else is 7-8 gear automagic because of "muh fuel efficiency". Even the atrocious B200s are no longer manuals. Too bad no one cares about reliability of the vehicle (which also costs money) anymore when they look at em pee gees.

I'd argue that. Modern diesels still maintain just as much in the way of longevity as older diesels. The exception being more expensive exchange injectors. Hell, high pressure common rail pumps are cheaper to have rebuilt than equivalent old fashioned mechanical distributor style injector pumps.
The biggest killer with modern diesels is emissions equipment such as EGR and DPFs. All of which, depending vehicle are overidable.

Of the examples you've listed may have their own specific problems (1KDs are notorious for premature injector failure for example), but most of those are easily overcome. There's no reason modern 1VDs and 4M41s aren't 500,000+km engines that the 1HZs and TD42s used to be. You just need a catch can and rid the horrendous EGR.

Also, CRD engines usually run substantially more boost than older IDI motors.

Anyway, my thread related suggestions.

Wat? Fords relays in the era fucked up now and then and ignition switches weren't the best but all Ford trucks large and small of those days are easy to work on.

I collected spare relays, popped the caps off, then manually actuated them for testing sometimes.

Visit the Ford Truck Enthusiasts site for all ya need to know.
