This reminds me of the time this lady came in the repair shop with her small Chevy on a platform saying that the car won't start.
When asked "When was the last time you changed the oil and filters?" she just made this weird face like"WTF are you talking about?"
Long story short she was not aware that you must change oil/filters and just drove it with no maintanance for almost 60k miles.

Yeah, I had to tear the whole interior apart after buying it and cleaned it completely. Doesn't smell like cigarettes anymore, but damn was it a whole ordeal to clean everything.

I was running some wires so I was going to take the interior apart anyway, but a two-day job turned into a week of tearing apart stuff to clean them and lubricate all the moving parts.

Here's the fuel filter I swapped out, the last time it had been swapped was back before this was imported from germany.

Personal gore experience. My clutch stopped pushing in, and when I pulled the transmission I found this.
It's the slave cylinder piston. Apparently the previous owner (or more likely their dumbass mechanic because it was an old dude) did a slave cylinder rebuild and left the old piston just hanging out in the bell housing.

Oh, no, it has both.

Because it uses the chain tensioner to phase the intake cam via taking away and giving it slack. Which is a much simpler and cheaper way to do valve timing.

Some states have "Registration enforced inspection" which means it has to pass inspection to be registered. I think the majority aren't like this, though. You can register the car in your name to say you own it, and inspection is a totally different thing that determines roadworthiness. Because you can own a car without it being roadworthy if it sits in your driveway or garage, this makes more sense.

1.) Hold a 30lb starter over your head, putting your hands between an exhaust manifold and a scalding oilpan.

or

2.) Undo an intake which takes 30 minutes if it's your first time and change the starter with full access from the top of the car.

Since people seem to have their heads exploding about states without inspections:

Michigan also has no inspections of any kind.

This sorta thing sounds okay, but then now it's up to the cops and they'll pull you over for any damn exhaust leak, but not for bubbled tires and bobbing suspension and a rusted out door.

Just got a first gen Tacoma for $600. Almost lost it braking for a sharp turn while on the test drive. This is how the guys son had fixed the rear brakes when the proportioning and bypass valve failed.

I had a guy come to our shop one day, rolling in on a completely flat tire and only wanted us to put his spare on. It was also the middle of winter and trunk was flooded with water. Since we had nothing else to do we sat there with hammers and a heat gun melting the ice to get it out. Charged him so much he could have bought a new tire.

I don't have pictures but I have hell of alot of stories about cars that I've driven to the end.
>First car I drove blew a rod and I slowly drove it home spraying oil everywhere and lots of smoke
>Second car, brother first changed a tire and forgot to tighten lug nuts and tire flew off going 55 buried it in a ditch and we put the tire back on and continued until he ran it out of oil.
>Third head blew and radiator leaking antifreeze into oil, drove it to the junkyard stopping 3 times to let it cool off one stop we put in water, next dirty river water, then a bottle of old oil into the radiator.
>Fourth no power steering, leaving home one day and hit a bump and the engine mounts broke and I lost all steering, we drove it to the junkyard by chaining the engine back up high enough for the steering would reconnect. Then also towed another car.
>Fifth Idk what went wrong but it was running on 2 cylinders and drove it to the junkyard and then was towed by the fourth car
>Sixth a van we had forever and one of the rear sparkplug threads broke so we left it empty then removed another, in the end it sounded like a giant lawnmower.
>Lastly my dad's f-150 holes in floorboard which you could see the road through, broken seat belts, nails in the rear break line, broken ball joints, more rust than metal now, massive oil, transmission, clutch, power steering and coolent leaks, a wooden log in one of the spring places to hold up the rest of the shocks, no fuel gauge, fuel tank is a 5gallon spare with a fuel pump in it, bald tires. But the radio and heater work rather well.
