I did for almost 3 years. 2 were with a girlfriend.

I took the summer off and Im currently working/renting through the fall, then hitting the road again just before winter.

AMA if you want. I am not shy.

You do know mobile internet is a thing? So is adjusting your wants to your income and ability. You can hang a modern camping hammock in a bare van and be very comfy. Many people sleep in hammocks at home, self included.
If I had to live in a van I'd just pack my old military mobility bag plus camping gear and have at it.
>>
>>16067883
Then that's only 1 style and shade. And do you then wash your jeans every single morning or something? And how am I spoiled? By having choice?

Depends where I am. I dont tend to stay places without anything going on. Lots of hiking, bike riding, hanging out with friends. Super rainy days in the middle of no where are the only bummer days.

>>16067811
1991 Chevy Astro van.
I have 2 pair to swap between and shorts for when its too hot.
Pants and jackets take up soooo much space.

>>16067817
Lots of public rest room for poopin. This might sound like a hell, but you adapt very quickly and stop even thinking about it after like a week. I honestly struggle more shitting in the woods than a public bathroom.
My girlfriend and I have a lot of friends all over the country that we visit often. One of the main reasons we travel is to see everyone, so its common for us to shower while visiting them. We also hit camp grounds time to time, which often have showers. If that's not an option, truck stop showers are a lot nicer than you would think.

>>16067821
Keep your van lowkey. The less you stand out the better.
There will be times when life isnt magical and youll need to park on a public street overnight. Having shit strapped all over the van or #VANLIFE on the side will get the cops called quick, but if you are lowkey, no one even looks twice.

The first year I did it, I had all sorts of camping gear and all sorts of gear I thought would make my life easier, but it really just took up space. Currently I just have like a slimmed down version of real life. Little sink, little stove, couple plates, couple cups. The only thing out of the normal is a folding camping saw, but thats luxury over necessity.

This is going to sound crazy, but when traveling I dont have a lot of things I need powered through the night. Wifi isnt everywhere so laptops kinda boring. I play on my phone a lot, but you can run that off a car battery for weeks before it would actually drain it.

Its a 1991 Chevy Astro van. 2wd model.
I bought it while on a motorcycle trip when my buddies bike died. I never intended it to be anything other then a way home but after seeing 22mpg I couldnt sell it.

No toilet. Piss bottle or public rest room. Hardest part of vanlife.

No back pain. I use a memory foam topper as a bed so its comfy as could be.

Very very rarely. I keep the van lowkey so most people dont even know I am in it.
>>
>>16067940

10k for a van? unlimited funds to travel?
10k for van and repairs and gas?

Ok then so 3k for a cargo van, get a small engine because you have not got much gas money.
2k should get you through the buildout if you have skills and access to tools.
Few hundred buckos for butane stoves and general camping gear leaves you about 4k for gas , food , insurance ,phone beows .
You gonna need a job in a few months.

$2k buildout. Ehhhhh. How serious are you about this? you want to live in this thing forever? or just go travel and have fun? My build out was like...$300? and lasted 3 years. Its only expensive if you want to look fancy.
Save the rest of those dollars for gas and foods and experiences.
That money will last so so so long if your not blowing it on booze and smokes.

Only pictures I have are on instragram, As soon as I can figure out how to turn an Instagram video into a .gif I'll post it the interior.

>>16068167
Maintenance has been pretty low.
I had a transmission blow out in PHX but since its an astro, It was $900 for a new one installed. Every other repair has been under $100. Its over 200,000 miles and as been great other than the trans. I cant really be mad that consider how cheap the van was and how much I drive it.

And yes, ship it ahead to a friends house. I do all my insurance and cell phone billing online so classic mail is pretty rare.

>>16068291
So, not being negative here, but do yourself a favor and do a small road trip before you buy all the big stuff. I use to lay in bed and dream about solar panels and battery banks, but once I got on the road I realized how much I didnt need all that.
We are probably completely different people, and I understand that you might need all that, but try it before hand just to see.

>>

Would it be better if you didn't live near a city?

I have done about 6 weeks at a time in a westy.
I like having all the comforts.
Cant live without a fridge stove and sink at minimum, I mean I could, but I dont really eat fast food and I like to cook.
Heater in winter is pretty key depending on where you end up, especially if you are a skier
Sick of propane fridge so solar and compressor fridge are a must for me.

It's pretty good. The little wooden book boxes are filled with a couple days worth of entertainment.

Needs to stop raining.

Stopped at my storage shed and picked up my winter sleeping bag. Getting a big buddy heater to make getting in and out of bed a smidge warmer.

>>16067949
I'd get a full size van if I was to start over.

>>16068007
>No toilet. Piss bottle or public restroom.
I just open the driver door for privacy and take a leak. If it's a busy place I'll pretend I'm doing something.

>>16068316
No. Can't speak for others, but you have to leave public camping spots after 15.. or was it 21 days in Michigan.

Not to mention, I'm fairly safe from mosquitoes. And I have a fan.

>>16068390
I'm setup for stealth camping but spend most of my time on state land. I use to carry a small pop up tent to reserve a spot and free up room in the van.

>>16068355
I'll agree on the stove, but nothing else.

Routine for me involves driving by the farmers market so I eat fresh food daily.

That is if I don't make a 1,400 calorie protein shake.

Going to start using a big buddy heater to help me get going in the morning, but there's no need for a heater.

>>16068421
I've yet to have anyone hassle me. Weird looks and people admiring my setup, but that's it.

Usually pull the shades out of the windows and drop the blackout curtains if I'm driving around.

You cant really tell, but there is massive under the bed storage too. All our clothes and gear is under there. Strapped to the roof is the same bubble wrap window blinds as >>16068494. We have the outside of ours painted black so when they are up, it just looks like heavy tint from the outside.

currently i have a LWB sprinter (4.4 meter load area)

and i drive for a living, courier work. im looking at buying the biggest XLWB sprinter (4. 7 meter load area) and having 3 meter load area in the back and converting the extra space into a sleeper cab, my company pays on 3 different tariffs im currently on the best one £0.9 / mile for 4 meter vans. but they still pay £0.72 for 3 meter vans, so i could have a nice living space plus load area then, and i would be able to get backruns on jobs too.

very often there's no work heading back to base so im going home empty, i dont really want to wait around or sleep in the van currently but if i had a sleeper cab i could wait around/sleep and then i'd get paid for coming home too.

plus it looks super comfy. one problem is i really want to get an XLWB sprinter with NO side door, which is almost impossible to find in england, i dont really want to spend ~£40k on a brand new van so that i can pick my options

I actually have said that to my wife, how it would be cool to buy one of th9se bubble things and use it as. Skylight/badass decoration.

Also the bus is 100% aluminum aside from the steel tube chassis and the copper rivets. So it would look the part if shined it up, painted a retro sexy lady on it amd had a turret bubble.

Big inverter and auxiliary batteries. Kind of want to splurge on a brand name alternators but the AutoZones lifetime warranty ones have paid for themselves in replacements over the years.
>Three 225ah batteries worth more than the van itself >Added a leaf spring & Monroe lift support shocks to help with the weight

Winter time I'll run my heated blanket overnight and an electric heater.

Summertime I run fans and a mini fridge for milk & eggs.

Year round

>Blender
>Microwave
>Water pump
>>
>>16075093
How often do you have to run the engine to recharge? Do you have a voltmeter?
>>
>>16075101
If I'm to completely drain the battery bank it takes a few hours of driving to top them back off. Alternator really isn't designed to do what it's doing. Installed a second one to help keep up with the demand.

If I'm near electricity I'll throw the charger on the primary battery and let the isolator do its job. Usually if I stay at designated campgrounds for rvs.

Solar chargers are kind of a tradeoff in the summer. The one I had kept me a steady form of juice at the expense of additional fans. Parking in the sun is a big no no.

The inverter has a LCD voltmeter screen built in. Believe it shuts off at 11.4.

Winter time is the only time I've drained the batteries completely.

I have a 30 minute commute one way to work and it'll charge them for the remainder of the day.

Use to camp near work but the 10 minutes of driving one way wasn't enough charge time.

3500 continuous 7000w peak.

I'd say around 1,800-2,000. Heater is 750, blanket is 130, microwave is 800.

My fans, water pump, fridge, and lights are dc.

When I bought the equipment I thought I'd be using a lot more. I was originally looking at ac fridges but I stumbled upon a dc mini fridge for cheap.

What I thought I'd use and what I truly use are two completely different things. I spent a lot of time checking out trophy rigs.

I spend most of my time at work, the gym, friends houses, playing on my phone, and reading.

Now that I think about it, we ran power tools building my friends garage. That had the inverter just a screaming. All the fans in the unit must've been on full blast.

Hardest part was getting past the social norms. When people ask where I live and I tell them my van it use to embarrass me. Now it's conversation piece.

THEN the built apartment van. I would use a very, very small box truck before a panel van just to get more usable space out of the cargo space geometry.

I'm considering going homeless for a few months after I finish college. I currently own a motorcycle.
What sort of jobs can I do anywhere, or work from the internet, that will pay my way? I know if I'm not paying rent, just insurance and gas, that my costs go down dramatically. But being able to have a quick and dirty way of money (that's not selling drugs or myself) would probably make my quality of life better.

Ease of parking, ease of navigating small spaces, fuel economy, blending in, trying for total stealth. Being able to park absolutely anywhere and not raise an eyebrow or get a knock, not having a memorable vehicle because I am working right now in one city, not traveling (yet). Call me paranoid. I want the anonymous factor in a vehicle-residence. Also a minivan is big enough for me, I'm pretty minimalist and don't want to cook in it.

>>16077788

Any fast food, restaurant, retail work, coffee, warehouse, small labor. But you'd need to be in one place a few months to work, then move on. Getting gigwork is do-able but unreliable. Sometimes there are simply no jobs to be had that week. Many of them are sketchy as hell. But I've done event work. But you're not gonna find something more than 10-15 /hr so plan on keeping your costs really fucking low, and be prepared in event you just can't find anything at all.

Your best bet is to get a side job now and save some money up.

Question. So you're living in your van in a city that has a mandate of moving your vehicle to a new spot at least every 3 days. And your van breaks down. What do you do? Assume you have about $1,000.

>>16084096

Hah, I guess you're right. That's what I'm primarily concerned about now (and freezing to death). I worry too much I guess.

One more thing, if I get a cop knock is it bad to just be honest and say I can't afford rent? My city has had drastic rent increases and the working class like police officers feel it pretty hard, too. I look young-ish and think most people would cut me a break, but hey I don't want them to ticket me for...being poor I guess.

It's just nice there are people on the internet to get assurance from. But everyday I work I am more convinced on going vanlife, I work and work and it all just goes to rent.
>>
>>16084192
If a cop knocks, ask him if you are obstructing anything and if he wants you to move your van. Don't act like what you're doing is wrong. Just be cooperative.

If he really presses you on why you're sleeping in a van, and you have a job which it sounds like you do, tell him you have employment and are just looking for a new apartment you can afford.

I don't recommend lying, but you could always say something like you're just in town a few days to visit a sibling and wanted to avoid a cheap motel. If he has a problem with it, ask him to recommend a decent motel and you'll drive there right now and get a room.
>>
>>16084192
If the cops come a knocking , just pretend you are a super hot chick.
Open the van door wearing something skimpy and ask if your panties are obstructing his view of anything.
You wanna play this sort of bugs bunny like.
Works every time.
>>
are there any women that like to meet guys that lives in a van?

Probably not normally, but I'm a musician and pay for my vandwelling by playing gigs. Because American vans have a low roof - 6' or less.
European vans have a higher roof. Some close to 8', but even that is pushing it.
The reason is the side of the van curves inward, reducing the actual surface area of the roof.
Also, the shower head needs to be at least a foot higher than your head.

>>16082238
>eh i would just shower outside i would just need a place to sit the barrell

Thats something completely different.
If you have a roof rack, you can use 6" PVC pipe for the container. Get a size the length of your van. Paint it black and it will even heat up trough sun magic.

Or you can get a 12v powered water pump. Then run the shower off a water tank located inside the van. Lots of different water storage units available. You can "hide" it under the a seat, or under the bed or whatever.
It won't really be hidden though. There are no hidden spaces when you're living in a place that small.

Get a good 12 fridge and a butane stove and hit the national parks.
Get a cassette toilet but try not to use it.
detergent bottle for piss ( I am assuming you are male)
big tub for sponge baths , doing dishes
Five gallon water jug
Some conversion vans have electric rear seats that turn into a bed. Pop your foam on top though cause they wont be super comfy otherwise.

Thanks for the advice, with that said, I'm fairly new to all this, actually had to Google what a conversion van was. Any model recommendations that are perhaps a great value, or known for reliability?
>>16090389
To clarify, this isn't a homeless fix or a long term housing thing, just a short term camper for vacations. I love sequoia national park and it's been far too long since I've been able to go
>>

I like chevy express vans myself.
1500 for better gas mileage and longevity
>>
>>16090923
Seems pretty nice, not alot of them in the LA area apparently, which seems odd, but it gives me a nice base to look at, ty anon
>>
>>16089344
I think that's a rebadged fiat van though, ie still a european van.
>>
>>16090923
I heard that it's better to get a 2500 or 3500 if you can find one i heard that they have better suspensions and it gets rid of the sway from the high top
>>
>>16090345
No he didn't i haven't talked to him in a while, i hope he comes back to /o/
>>
>>16091810
gs mileage is the big reason for 1500, its way better
>>
>>16092080
Don't expect good gas in a big van anyway, for a few less mpg you could have a more durable van with more power and if it really stops the sway it's more than worth it
>>
>>16089344
That's a rebranded Fiat Ducato (Eurovan)

The Dodge Sprinter is also a rebranded Mercedes Sprinter
>>
>>16092108
My 1500 gets 18 mpg with AWD and a v8 .
The v6 version can get over 20.
The gearing in the other two is much lower and they are heavier.
Those get 12 to 15 athe best.
That makes a huge difference especially if gas goes up again.
>>
>>16092113
What kind to you have exactly?
i had a 90's ford e150 conversion van and it only got like 8-12 mpg
good thing gas stays under $2 here

Fords from the 90s got horrible mileage.
I had a buddy with a six cylinder who got 12 mpgs.
You need a chevy 1500 from 98 to2014
>>
>>16092237
How much better mpg do 90's chevys get?
>>
>>16092260
Like I said before. the six can get over 20 if driven right and light load.
Thats the express with a 4.3 , not sure about earlier ones.
>>
>>16092237
12mpg city is pretty average for a full size van, regardless of make and engine options.

>>16092260
Highway, 1-2 mpg if you're lucky. It all comes down to driving style. If you drive it like a Miata, expect single digits everywhere.

>>16092266
What six are you referring to? The 4.3 is the v6 option and I can assure you 21mpg is possible if cruise is set at 60.

Then again, you're comparing early 90s models to early & late 2000s models.

If I was to pick a van I'd pick the whatever one was in better shape for the price. Two vans for the same price in the same shape? The Ford, simply because I know my way around Ford vehicles.

Tbf I dally a 5th gen ss, so gas isn't that big of a concern to me, though obviously I don't wanna just waste for no reason. Is the sway in the 1500 actually a real problem, or just a minor nuisance?
>>
>>16093072
It's not to big of a problem but i still think a 2500 would be your best bet desu
>>
>>16093120

>>

if you go highway speeds with one you can really notice it
>>
>>16094138

Also the shocks and leaf springs had similar wear?

Here in Toronto I know they're are dedicated parking lots for truckers. Oakville North Walmart for instance even passenger cars can park over night or you can sleep in it. Anyone know of a website or book that would list such places?
>>
>>16095023
If I not mistaken, the 2500 and up usually have Stabilitrak which I think is a load sensing system. Even Astros had a "heavy duty" option which the rear shocks had coil Springs around them as well as leaf springs. So that's also extra cost when you have to service the Stabilitrak or replace a sensor etc.
>>
>>16095366
I'm an idiot, Stabilitrak is just traction control and GM's name for it but replacing anything on a 2500 is going to cost more than a 1500
>>

In Europe? Maybe.

In the US most vans have windows and their main purpose is recreational.

>>

True. But the point that >>16086607 made was that Americans could get them with extended roofs stock, not that American companies made them.

>>16096104
In America, too. There are panel vans (ie no windows) and they're generally seen as creepy, with or without branding for contractors on the side. Full-size vans with windows are usually seen as work vans or transport vans and mini-vans are seen as soccer mom/numale cars and still generally creepy. Sorry, brah.

>>

A cat can live in a van/on the road pretty well, though. I knew a few truck drivers who went everywhere with a cat or small dog so they didn't get lonely (or insane).

Once your cat gets used to the space, they'll recognize the van as "home" and can wander around whenever you're parked and be trusted to return or stay close by. Sometimes you might have to go looking for them, maybe.

I was driving the other night and I saw this VW van driving by. While it didn't look cool, it looked comfy as hell.

It had these windows that you could push out, and I assume it'd be great for ventilation. Also, it looked wide enough for maybe a queen sized bed inside. It even had little curtains that covered the windows. As I was driving, tired and worried about the weight of my eyelids, I couldn't help but wonder what it would be like to just pull off the road, climb into the back, and just sleep.

I want my fuck-you money so I can walk from any job I don't like. No rent to worry about, already have the van, just need 60/month for insurance and 40-80/month gas, plus food, gym, and phone bill. You go from needing 1000-1500 a month inna-apartment to just needing about 200-300/month. Hell, it's possible to get that much doing gigwork or a part time. Any extra you get goes in the bank to cushion for the downtime. An apartment/house feels more secure but it is just deception. Lose your job, lose your home. Aint' no one gonna repossess your $3k vehicle since you don't owe money on it and don't have anyone to pay every month.

The split-window buses only had "sliding" windows in the front doors- and they slid horizontally rather than rolling down. The side windows in the back were all hinged, with a folding latch that could hold them open a few inches at one end. it does help for ventilation, but it's not as good as having fully functional windows.

Since the split-window model's windshield panels were also flat, it was possible to modify those to flap open as well. The setup is/was called a "safari window", and also required some hardware to turn/tuck the windshield wipers out of the way. Some busses got rear safari windows too.

They are definitely comfy as fuck (especially the deluxe/samba versions with the rag top and a lot of extra windows) but not necessarily comfortable... insulation is almost nonexistent for both noise and heat. Bed conversions were common, but the rear engine means a high "deck" for the mattress that can be inconvenient for, say, stealth camping. Factory camper models had the pop-up top.

Grand Caravan reporting in, taking baby to dmv tomorrow to get plated. Buying materials today. Hoping to find milk crates to use as shelving.

There was some bro rigged one out for a trip to alaska, on imgur somewhere. He had fancy wood platforms and all. These niggers run forever and while generally sort of shitty, they're not excessively shitty enough in any given area to need expensive repairs. Might expect 100-200 in work here and there, but nothing like a transmission blowing. Not the most powerful, not the most elegant, but it gets the job done.

I like them because they're so common, blend in anywhere, you'll never be bothered. And no one would try to steal a shitty mommy mobile. Can you imagine the nigger takes a minivan to strip for parts to his hood? Laughing stock. Get capped for being an embarrassment. And if it's messy or has a bunch of blankets and shit in it, people just assume you have kids.

Europe's biggest vans are definitely bigger, but our "average" vans are typically much wider.

The new Ford Transit is the same size as the European models, and rwd, and I think the medium size one is like 700 cubic feet of cargo volume. Same width as that sort of van there, but taller.

The LWB Econoline is about 6'2" wide so you can put a bed sideways as long as you aren't super tall.

Probably the easiest van to work on that's widely available in America. But terrible gas mileage.

That's all I got.

I don't collect lots of compact interior builds since I'm only interested in one big enough to have a bed going sideways and/or tall enough to put the bed up in the high top or pop up.

What do you guys think of conversion vans?

Other than the shells, I definitely wouldn't buy one for their interior, but they're not designed for what this thread is about
>>
>>16109098
I think they're awful.

They look like terrible old people shit. Not cool at all.
Quality is generally terrible.
They'll be extremely dated.

A modern build with modern electricals and gadgets and insulation and shit is so vastly superior.

I'm starting to notice the vandwellers in my city now that I am aware this is a thing. Before they were practically invisible. One guy had starry night painted on his RV. another is in a short bus, nigga i saw you.

>that paint job

Great way to get rear ended.

Maybe but for now I'm using matting. floor isn;t perfectly level, gonna layer cardboard to level and insulate then matting and rugs on top. I'm tossing the 2nd row seats to use their stow space as a hidden storage bin, also because they just won't stow. Think they're a swap seat or something... slashed my hand open pulling them out. What kind of stealth curtains do you guys use and how do you have them rigged up? Would pinning a fleece blanket to the ceiling be stupid or would it help for winter?

Blackout curtains and reflecting shades. Don't cheap out on blackout curtains.

I can turn my >>16068494 light bar on and you can't see light from the outside. I use a soft plastic bondo puddy to slide the shades behind the trim. Thankfully GM can't make a nice tight fit so it's pretty easy to do.

Paint the outside of the shades black to make it appear as if you have really tinted windows.

Lithium Ion is pretty much the new state of the art. I don't think there is any promising new battery tech on the way.

I thought there was some work coming along with graphene use in battery tech?
>>
>>16110302
Dude. It usually takes 10+ years from something to go from lab trials to actually in use.

There are much smaller, lighter Li-Ion batteries that just started being made this year, but they can still blow up spectacularly.

Why are you getting all pissy? I'm just asking about battery tech, calm your autism
