It makes sense for the company to join Formula E, they already were backing a privateer team. This is also a move to "clean up" the company's image by showing commitment to focusing on electric technologies and they're betting on Formula E catching on in the future.

LMP1 has been a dying spec for years. It simply grew too big for interest to be sustained It costs hundreds of millions for a team to be competitive which means no small can afford to enter with a chance at winning and no major manufacturer is willing to bet that money to start up a team and still probably lose.

Audi closing their prototype racing program is a huge blow to the LMP1 class, WEC, and the LM24 race. But it shouldn't come as a surprise as they've been at it for 17 years and the success of the program doesn't leave anything else to prove. With class shrinking, VAG heads might have Porsche pull out as well which would leave Toyota as the only manufacturer team and no serious competitors.

in fact that's probably what the fan boost will evolve into if formula E lasts; markers placed way off the racing line in some cases that activate a temporary boost when run over.
