Is it possible to swap the wheel hubs for ones from a later year?
I want different wheels but I don't like the idea of spacers.

Could low oil cause a car to not start?
I've checked my fuel system from the pump to the injectors, and my electric system from the battery to the spark plugs, even the fuses, starter motor is turning over, but I'm just not getting ignition.
Only thing that seems out of the ordinary is my oil level is close to min than max, but everything else seems like it should be working.

if i have to pull over in a city, where do i pull over? always wondered this since there's not a space like on a highway. It's hard to google because it's just a bunch of results for people asking if cop can pull you over in other cities lmfao
>>
>>16061922
if you're getting pulled over you just stop in the right lane or anywhere there is a spot (you're not parking so fire hydrant red curb etc is fine)

otherwise just do what you can to be as safe as possible, there is usually a spot matching your desperation level at some point

/o/ a buddy of mine knows a guy that sells winter tires for cheap. Apparently they are a wholesale retailer. What questions and things should I ask to make sure everything is on the up and up?

Do tires have warranties? I know some have manufacturer tread warranties but I mean more like, say I see the tire is damaged after I receive them etc.

Also any brand recommendations? I probably can't afford top of the line, but I'd like not to waste my money. I have a compact sedan

They got a new suspension in 2003 which is why the wheel design became different. You might as well buy a 2003+ panther if you like the wheels. Handling will be better too.

My car has 125k miles on it. I've always used conventional oil since 70k when I bought it. Will switching to synthetic now harm anything or is that just a meme?
>>
Need some advice,
I have a friend with an eg hatch that was hit in the front and only the core support was damaged. The car has now been sitting around for two years in his garage and I'm thinking about picking it up as a project car, the car has already been swapped with a b18c1 and gsr trans, it's on coilovers and has a few other little mods. My question is what would be a reasonable offer, I've been think somewhere around 800-1000$ my estimate would be about 500$ to get the car back on the road and 2000$ to make it everything I want. Any advice is welcome.

>>16063393
I accidentally ran full synthetic in a 1984 D150 with no problem (it always leaked oil fairly quickly so I would just get the cheapest oil and change every 2k when it was low)

>>16062924
Just ask at your local parts store they should have a recommendation

>>16062350
Check the build date (Google it if you don't know how). Expect it to be off brand tires with no warranty, wich for winter tires doesn't really matter.
>>
>>16063575
From what we can tell it was just the core support, granted I haven't measure everything out we just pulled the support out straight in hopes that if something bent we would bend it back then drilled out the spot welds and took off the support. We dry fitted a new one on and it seems to line up well. But we would have to buy all the other body panels to be sure.

>>
>>16064834
heater core sounds like it's blocked or bad since you do have some hot air sometimes. sounds like the core is getting hot then cooling too fast then repeating the process; could also be the blend door sticking, it's actuator going bad, or possibly the thermostat. However if it was your thermostat you would have other engine heating problems
Step 1: replace the thermostat (they're cheap), flush the cooling system
if step one doesn't work, i'd recommend replacing the heater core and its hoses

reposting from my other thread:

My car had a rattle right in front of me, which I traced to the instrument cluster. I took off the shroud that covers the instrument cluster (I didn't take out the cluster itself), and stuffed some microfiber rags all around the cluster. I put the shroud back on, and now the rattle is gone.

However, I didn't really consider what is below and behind the instrument cluster. Is there a steering component that the rags might fall down onto, or is that partitioned off? Also, is the only thing behind the instrument cluster the firewall to the engine bay? I just don't want to have some microfiber rags shake themselves loose and fall down onto something bad.

Thanks.

UK poorfag here. I earn about £750 a month, and after paying for rent/utilities, food, phone, gym and music subscriptions I have about £100 left for the month. I've been cycling to work, but now I need a car. What would you recommend? I have a couple thousand in savings, but I don't know if I should dip into that. Could I buy some new shitbox and pay for it over years, or should I buy some really old shitbox used at once? I checked the sticky, but it seems outdated and very NA-centric. It's worth adding that I'm 18, not in school or uni, and it will be my first car, so insurance is going to be very expensive.

My 2002 automatic dodge neon will rev without going into gear, almost like I'm in neutral and pushing on the throttle.

I recently put a serpentine belt on my power steering, and replaced the idler pulley, for which task I took out a bolt and jacked the motor up out of the car, then replaced. I have yet to really adjust and tighten that belt, am lazy

My car sounds like its idling pretty shitty half the time i drive it. It usually only happens when it barely starts. Itll start and the computer will set my rpms to like 1.5k (normally idles around 1k in park) and slowly work it down to around 1k. When this happens it sounds like it almost dies if i go below 5mph. If i hit the gas aftwr that it jumps, rather than slowly speeding up. Already replaced plugs a month ago, and my timing isnt off. I dont have too much experience or knowledge, but im trying to learn more. Any ideas as to what the issue(s) could be?
>>
>>16065981

Update on issue: when the car is in motion, the fans blow heat but when the car is at a stop, cold air blows.
>>
>>16066594

so in drive it just revs? check your transmission fluid level, the forward clutches in the trans arent engaging. if it happened RIGHT after changing the mounts, thats a coincidence. if its some time after, your trans might be blown or its low on fluid

>>16066612

check for vacuum line leaks and check your coolant temperature sensor. i had a 1988 Nissan KingCab that would flood and choke out on warm starts unless you hit the gas for 5 seconds after starting it then it was fine, coolant temperature sensor connector was broken off so it flooded the engine warm
>>

Turns out you can just buy new ones.
So, new dumb question, I got the new pump switched over, and when I turn the key, I don't hear it prime, but when I try to start it, I can hear the pump whirring, but the car doesn't start, and the pump keeps makeing the whirring noise for a second after I stop trying. Double checked all fuses and I just got a new main relay, too. I think the old pump was broken because it didn't make any noise at all, but I don't get why I'm still not starting.
>>
>>16067870
you probably need to prime it a lot more. on my se-r it takes forever if I lose pressure.

when it happens to me I turn the key enough to hear the pump whine but not enough to start. repeat that for a good 10 min then see if it starts.

also make sure your battery is charged up/not bad
>>
>>16068053
What do you mean when you say to prime it for 10 minutes? Just leave the key on run? Also, my battery should be fine, we tried jump starting it just to see if it was the battery, but the starter is starting up fine every time. I'm getting spark on every plug, new plugs and wires, checked every fuse, checked the fuel filter and injectors, just replaced the pump in it too and main relay, I've got oil pressure, I don't know what else to test
>>
>>16068115
naw it will only spin for 10 sec, so you need to keep turning the key on and off but dont start it just make the pump spin.

Just a meme. The only things to do would be one short change with a cheap synth (say, 2k miles) then change with a good synth and filter. I've got a 2005 Ford Ranger and I need to replace the fuel filter. Apparently I have to relieve the pressure first though. The Haynes manual says to find the inertia switch and use that, while people on the internet (such as chrisfix) say to remove the fuse for the fuel pump and run the engine until it stalls. Which should I do? It seems like allowing the engine to stall could be harmful. Thanks in advance
Also, tips are appreciated

wear clothes that don't get uncomfortable and heavy when wet. have a plastic sheet/mat so you don't get dirty af. the poncho is a good idea and if you want to look super retarded: take a beach umbrella with you if you'll be working around one place like the engine bay alot

Spark plugs are cheap, you might aswell change them.
If they have one bad the distance between the electrodes is to high, you can bend the ground electrode to the positive one in order to correct that,
Sometimes the isolator breaks, then you will have to replace them since one cylinder won´t fire.
>>
>>16071791
It's referring to how much the air is compressed in pounds per square inch. The amount of air increases with compression, however the size of the turbo must be taken into account. Almost like if you have a low profile tire inflated to 30 psi and a truck tire inflated to 30 psi. Both have the same amount of pressure but the truck tire has more air due to its increased volume.
>>
>>16073197
Guess I'll try that then.

I took my car to get a tire patched and drove over to the place on a spare on backwards (thanks previous owner for getting a directional on a spare). They patched the tire and put it on the car and after driving about 5 miles the alignment went seriously out of whack. Like front and rear visibly out of alignment. Did they fuck up or was it just coincidence? I don't see how they could break anything by taking a wheel off and putting another one on. Maybe they knocked the wheel weights off?

That's bad advice. In my state, you cannot block the fire hydrant or driveway by parking your car there. The police officer would just add another citation to your ticket because when you commit yet another infraction, it tells him you no longer deserve just a warning. You need a ticket in order to force you to recognize that you are a problem causing driver.

>Will switching to synthetic now harm anything or is that just a meme?

It doesn't harm the engine's operating parts if that's what you mean. It improves their longevity. However, some full synthetic oils such as pennzoil platinum ULTRA (as opposed to regular platinum) have a lot of detergent in them. Some people report that they get oil leaks in the seals because the "glaze type" deposits were cleaned away by the oil. If you do notice oil leaks, use the "high mileage" version of full synth. The major brands such as mobil, pennzoil, and quaker state have high mileage versions. Those have something in them to swell the seals a little bit to reduce the oil leak.

Also check out the archived synthetic vs convention oil thread at:

>Full tank of gas
Check your fuses. If the fuel pump fuse is blown, then it doesn't matter if you have full tank or not because you can crank forever and it won't start. If the fues is good, then in some cars, if you turn the key to the start position but do not crank the engine, you might be able to hear if the fuel pump starts up or not.

>battery is fine although it was getting drained trying to start the car over and over.

i've only driven an automatic but im interested in a manual car

im still wrapping my head around it and I don't know anyone who can teach me.

Why do you need to push the clutch, then the gas, then release the clutch slowly? Does the car not accelerate despite the engine already being in contact with the wheels or whatever in the first place with the clutch released?

Because most standard small petrol engines are not producing enough power on idle to get the car moving smoothly from a complete stop. This means you'll have to raise the RPM's and the power.

Larger engines in lighter cars and most diesels like my Hilux will be able to smoothly pull away by only releasing the clutch, while the small 1.5 DuraTorq in the Ford Transit Courier I use at work will nearly choke if I dont use the throttle aswell, even tho its a diesel
>>
>>16084157
In the simplest terms most engines don't have enough torque/gearing to over come the weight of the car from a stand still and have to be eased in.

Once the clutch is let out, the engine is mechanically linked to the wheels and if the wheels aren't turning the engine isn't turning, so you have to a way to turn the wheels til the get to a proper speed in order for then to still run.

If you learn where the bite point is, then if you're easing the clutch out enough most cars will start to move with out using the gas, but its bad for the clutch and flywheel, so as for learning its the best way to get the car moving but don't make a habit of it.
Watch a few you tube videos, and don't over think things

There are three chambres allow the car to go forward: The engine that spins and provides movement, the transmission that allows different gear ratios to push out different power (speed and torque) to the wheels, and the clutch that connects the two.
The clutch can be engaged to disconnect the engine from the transmission or else will allow the transmission (and then the drive train) to be powered by the engine.

the reason you release the clutch slowly is so that you allow the gears to come into ratio with what the drivetrain is spinning. There is a special intermediate gear (depending on your type of manual transmission. planetary, etc) that will automatically rotate to your drivetrain's rpm and connect it with your engine rpm so you don't have to "rev match". This is only available for vehicles after 1970s or something.

Worthy to note that the transmission powers the drivetrain which is one separate part of the vehicle that does not need to have separate gear ratios since it's evened out by the transmission.

Good luck! and watch some animations on a manual vehicle. Here are two that help the visual learner:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCu9W9xNwtI
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Ld6xhJuGBk

Also look at the gears on a bicycle - that helped me too since almost all bicycles are manual.

Is it okay to maintain the clutch pressed at stops, in first gear, instead of putting in neutral and letting go of it? and when slowing down for a turn, say at 4th gear, depress the clutch, slow down enough for 2nd and just then let go off the clutch to avoid it from stalling? I drive for years but I have the feeling that pressing the clutch(completely) for too long wears it out.

Im looking to buy entry level german sedan. Cars that Im considering are w204, e90 and f30.

Every review there is says that bimmer is better than benz. (both e90 and f30) Problem is that bimmers are considerably cheaper than benzes. At first I only looked at e90 and thought it was great deal compared to decent w204 but when I saw that f30 is also less expensive and much newer I knew something wasnt right.

Why are they cheaper? Why would I trust reviewers when their owners don't value them higher than older generation benz?

>>
>>16088715
Anythings possible with the right amount of money.

But in your case it depends on the car, the engine, the bolt patter on said engine, the bolt pattern on the transmission, if the driveshaft(s) fits and anything else the new transmission would require.

>>16088181
Have you considered there are possibly more of the BMW's out there?

Market prices fluctuate on more things than how much their owners value the car.

And unless you're an idiot, you should realize higher price does not always equal a better product.

>>16087273
Probably a linkage that's shot, you keep driving on it with out having it looked at you could potentially lose the wheel while driving.

>>16086263
Holding it while stopped is generally bad, and depending on conditions will glaze the flywheel and burn the clutch, but your mileage my vary.

If you're going from 4th to second just slow down in fourth as low as you can then put it into second. If you instead prefer to engine brake then rev match then down shift earlier.

Personally I prefer my $600,000 house looking at the rockies to fucking around over a $25 emissions test, but that's just me.

The worst part is the seller is responsible for emissions and even if you got your emissions done the day before for plates, you have to go back and get a special sale slip emissions test to sell- but of course NOBODY fucking does because you're not going to haggle $100 off a car and then turn to the guy and go "well I'll give you the cash as soon as you take off work and run down to the emissions place and then get back to me" because you know what? fuck you.

Turned on my car just now and she's shaking a bit, and I can smell gas. Only thing I know is lately, I cleaned the posts on my battery, added trans fluid, and there's an arm I have to tighten up right by the power steering assembly. And she's low on gas.

WHAT IS THIS

Broken exaust manifold.

Or you computer reset when you pulled the batter and it needs to remap

At first I thought the gas was from the Gas Station I was parked at, but ur followed me home.

Too tired to fight with the car now, she's got a full tank and I've got tomorrow off, I'll check out the exhaust. She's old af too so I guess dropping 500$ into a new exhaust system won't hurt
