These things have huge tuning potential if you get them with the inline 5.
The V6 models aren't as ridiculously moddable, but they are good candidates for a 2.7TT swap from an A6 or (R)S4.
And if you truly want to go full madman, the 4.2l V8 fits in the engine bay as well.
94-99 saab 900/9-3 turbo: 1500 dollah
gt28 turbo of some sort: 1000 dollah
t5 ecu engine suite: free!
interface connections: 10bucks to 200dollah depending on wether or not you want to build it yourself
3" exhaust: 200 to 800 dollah.
400hp+ to your front wheels in a car that weighs 3000lbs or less for 3000 to 4000 dollah.

I drove one of these for 6 years with no problems (Until some fuck with a lifted mall crawler backed into me and kept going). The V6 is not at all underpowered, but could take mods easily. Throw two turbos on there and lower it, exhaust swap. You could even swap the 3.3L V6 with the 3.5L V6 from the Santa Fe, then turbo that. Also, it's pretty comfy imho
