For some reason the b16 goes for multiple thousands, but something like the b20b can be had between 400-600, why is that?

I mean...20 is higher than 16. Is b20b just not viable for the hatch?

>>16058191
B16 is a rarer engine and makes about the same power as the b20b. Which B16 are you talking about?

B16a or b.

Cursory research tells me if I wish to go forward, the b20 is the direction I will go in. I'm pretty confident because all I really think I'll need is to scavenge some integras for b series parts. Hopefully that didn't jinx me

Is there any reason this plan is stupid? I might just be excited over a relatively cheap winter project
>>
>>16058242
I bought a b20z2 for $150 bucks.
The tricky part will be getting a tranny for cheap.
Your plan will work. B16 revs higher and has vtak, and the heads are desirable for type r clone motors. B20 is really good because of torque and is cheap cause mass produced. Only problem is that b20 has thin sleeves so it doesn't take forced induction as happily

Need some advice,
I have a friend with an eg hatch that was hit in the front and only the core support was damaged. The car has now been sitting around for two years in his garage and I'm thinking about picking it up as a project car, the car has already been swapped with a b18c1 and gsr trans, it's on coilovers and has a few other little mods. My question is what would be a reasonable offer, I've been think somewhere around 800-1000$ my estimate would be about 500$ to get the car back on the road and 1500$ to make it everything I want. Any advice is welcome.
>>
>>16060390
Yea $1k sounds good. It depends on your friend
>>
>lost my Honda in a hit and run cause the faggot couldn't keep his distance

Why do people drive so fucking close? I can't drive 10 mph over the speed limit everywhere I go. Tailgating doesn't make the lane go faster.
>>
>>16060534
He's been a friend for a long time and I know the car has been taken care of pretty well, the occasional hooning but not raced. My dream is to clone a spoon sports eg and turbo it.
>>
>>16060536

>>
>>16061101
Door lock deal what?
>>
>>16060641

>>
>>16060390

No fucking way you are going to get a GSR motor and tranny for 1k

If you offer that to your friend and he takes it, you are a bad friend.

The tranny alone is worth about 5-600 if it has no grinds
>>
>>16061199
The door is stuck shut so now I've had to tear the door panel back off, with the door closed, for the second time. Other time the retard PO just put one bolt in the window instead of two so it fell off.

Right now I'm trying to use a pick in the lock mechanism to get the door open
>>
>>16061406
He's already considered the offer as doable, the main reason I want it is because it has sentimental value to me from the times before he became an out of control drug addict. Now he won't get a licence for 5 years and he knows the car deserves better than just sitting around. The reason I offered that much is because I've found other eg's with a gsr swap to be around 2100 in my area, and it needs about 1000 in work.

Check the fluid level, remove the drain plug if the trans and put your a white paper towel in there. If there isn't fluid immediately as soon as you put it in, it's low. See what color the fluid is on the paper towel good trans fluid should be light translucent red ish in color.
If you have a trans dip stick, it's easier

trans fluid is fine. surprisingly no burns as well. slight milky hot pink colour. trans stick has it only slightly low, though its been that way for a while.

>>
>>16062899
Honestly a vtec D16 would suit you fine, small increase in power over stock and it will be way, way cheaper to put in than a b series. B16s and B18s are getting in to the thousands of dollars, it's ridiculous when you can get a complete swap including wiring harness of a low miles D16 from a junkyard for a quarter of the price. Hell, spend the money you save doing a low boost turbo build, you can probably have 150-175 to the wheels super reliably which would make a crx scoot pretty well. Any more power and things will start breaking, it's a near 30 year old shitbox and it wasn't particularly sturdy from the factory.

I have this car with a b18c1 in it.

Depending on your skills it will accept D or B readily, and with a little modification accept an H.

This car with a GSR motor with I/H/E absolutely roasts the wheels in first and second gear has monster torque steer when you hammer it.

This guy >>16063020 has no idea what he's talking about as far as things breaking. He's just spreading FUD.

If you are going to buy a first gen CRX, check for rust near or on the panhard bar mount and near the torsion bar mounts. Rust in either one of these areas is pretty much fatal.

If you have any questions let me know

>>
>>16064856
>Not understanding natural frequency of materials
>Physics degree
Your bullshitting me. Large vibrations from d6/17s during idle converge to the natural frequency of the motor mounts resulting in premature degradation and early yeild cracks. this is thanks to lack of proper dampening at the bay that caused multiple recalls which replaced these said mounts with one with a much larger yeild point and with some of the models with new/different dampeners. The engine vibrations in some converged hard enough to go past the yeild point of the mounts grounding the engine. Honda had a couple recalls because of this these reports of cracked passenger side motor mounts particularly in 2001. This is intro to phys stuff anon.

If it's for normies, you may want to do a little self reflection and figure out why you have these compulsions.

wide range of natural frequency's in internal parts isn't good on an i4. i4s have more secondary balance issues is innate in that type of engine, however what i mentioned last post just adds fuel to the fire when on worn dampeners. it causes interesting wear to the upper half of the engine since more inertia is moving upwards in inline 4s. this can be related to why there a so many blown and thrown rod late d series engines like with the d16/17, since there is more wear and stress through converged frequencies put on the rings and shaft, which on stock are light weight and relatively cheap. replaced dampeners gets it going a long way but with vtec d series, thanks to faggots, they tend to have wrecked internals from them trying to race on stock internals. you need to do slight engine work is what im saying. sorry i didn't really go into detail on that in my initial post, i thought it made since in context.
also i'm starting to think the "crx cant handle 200hp" anon is corey.

Okay, maybe you're right on that point. I'd just like to say that it's atypical to go on anonymous image boards, assume a name so that people know it's you, and then brag about all the sex you're having.

Also, if you are in a relationship and you aren't having sex as much as you'd like, you are fucking up. It's time to make a change and start living for your own happiness.

I have no problems with people that are sexually free, but what I do have a problem with are people that are using sex as a way to fill a void and go around talking about how much sex they are having. (Trying to get attention)

Between the trip code and using honda general as his personal blog, I came to the conclusion that he's dysfunctional. Sure he can laugh it off and try to make fun of my posts, but I honestly care about how he's doing. I really think he should take some time, reevaluate what makes him happy, and pursue that. See, the mistake you are making is thinking the trip code adds anything to the equation.
I've also not had sex in weeks, so bragging about sex is a projection of yours.

rare they are offered on their own as a class. you have to find books and documentation online or by design manuals and changes made as well as finding out why they changed them for the most part. inline, flat, and v engines have the most documentation online but difficult to prove true unless it they actual sources. though best results i get understanding layouts is by looking up specs and matching them up with improvements made over a timeline.

Idle air control valve is the solution to everything on /hg/

You wouldn't have a running engine if the belt had an issue.
>>

Ah, I'll have to look at it tomorrow. I thought it could be the timing belt because the shop guys said it might need timing belt work since it had a rough start on occasion.
>>
>>16069127
It could be timing belt issues. My old Civic had a hunting idle issue that I couldn't fix through cleaning the iacv so i decided "fuck it, it's fine" then the timing belt broke. If it's out of time it can cause hunting idle.

Did I fuck up? Me and this guy were negotiating on two wavelengths, me wanting to buy the shell, him wanting to sell the car with a b18 in it, but with a thrown rod, so he wanted more because it comes with the b18, I wanted less because it was a shell, but we hammered it out and I'm tentatively buying the shell for 1k.

Now that I think, is that too much? I figure he's saving me some work because it's set up to take a B series. It looks pretty clean, ls trans.

Good deal? Can I drop the b20 in there without any difficulty? I don't have leftover scratch for a b18 just yet

>>16071565
Yeah we got wires crossed, I was trying to buy the shell (ad fucking said SHELL) but he was trying to sell a car with a fucked up motor.

We were both in the right (me wanting less for a shell and him wanting more for a motor) so we got confused and ended up at 1k.

Now I can't renegotiate the offer, so I need someone here to kill me before I go to buy this, 1000 obo

To be fair though I looked at it, he swapped in all the B series shit I was going to buy and swap in myself.
>>
>>16071587
1k isn't bad at all considering you've basically got everything setup for you to drop it in. Go for it, Anon. It'll be worth it and once you're done you won't regret it, especially in such good condition.
>>
>>16071587
Why don't you just show up with $750 and just tell him you only want the shell? I know you already said one thing but this is your money, don't waste it over a faux pas
>>
>>16071643
I was thinking that but the offer is too good, I priced a similar hatch a while back, 500 for the D series shell, then an extra grand for all the integra parts, even if I scavenge them from a junkyard, then more for the motor.

So, at least this is a similar price to what I'd be paying if I bought the stock eg civic + parts + engine. I'd feel like an asshole coming up with less than I agreed on.

Maybe I can come down 100-150 the day of and tell the guy I needed it to pay for a tow dolly, he seemed to know what was in the car so he probably knows it's only going to get sold to another guy who wants to go fast in a civic, which there aren't many of around here.

As long as the b20 drops right in then I won't feel burned to be honest

also WHAT B series is going in the car. and what B series did it have

there are so many variables not knowing its impossible to say if it will actually work

OBD0? OBDI? OBDII?. they're all DOHC but is it VTEC?

is your engine from a CR-V, a prelude?

they ARE different

>B18A1, OBD0
>Transmission: S1, YS1, cable. Smaller diameter input shaft compared to traditional 92-01 B-series transmissions.

>B18A1 non-vtec 92-93 integra
>OBD1 PR4 ECU

these two are the "same" engine but they're not compatible with each other.

we can almost assume the car was a USDM B18B1 swap from a 94-01 ingtegra with a Y80 non-LSD trans. running a

if your engine is NOT a CR-V B20B you can pretty much forget about using it

>(B20A) It would be succeeded by the Honda B engine. Although sharing similar nomenclature and some design elements, the earlier B20A substantially differs from the later B-series in architecture enough to be considered two different engine families and must not be confused with other B-series engines and the B20B, a 2.0 liter DOHC engine introduced alongside the Honda CR-V in 1994.

Difference between vtec and non vtec is a wire going to the ecu, and 2 plugs on the harness (if harness doesnt have you can add easily)

You can still use w/e tranny and itll be same mounts etc

So much shit is compatible that for instance right now I'm using a harness from a D16Y8 to run a B18c1 and it works flawlessly.

As far as vtec shit goes, they're cool if you like revving high. If you like torque and dont rev your shit, a B20 is going to be the right choice (and cheaper)

I was just trying to make a point

If you buy from a dealer, call and see if they will compression test it for you when you get there. Most will, and if numbers are good, it's "probably" a good motor.

>>16072854
So, if I wanted to dd this car, high comp or low comp?

>>
>>16072866

B20Z2/B20B high comp makes more power

High compression with same engine displacement = more power

Having a low comp motor is nice because its easier to tune for turbo

B20 sleeves are thin so turbo isnt really great choice anyway (but you can fix that by resleeving)

1. Weight remains almost exactly the same in a swap
2. coefficient of drag for the CRX is .32 (On par with more modern cars)
3. An increase to 200 horsepower will not affect handling in a measurable way. You don't realize this because you drive your mom's van
4. Insulation for road safety? Literally what? Shouldn't all racecar drivers be dead then?
5. Again, no increase in weight, and the slight bump to 200 horsepower isn't going to change anything

Side note: Often times when people swap their cars they will delete stuff, which can mean the car will be lighter and handle slightly better

You're being a faggot. First you said the car was going to break, now it's the bernoulli principle. You have obviously never driven anything or else you'd scoff at the idea of 200 horsepower being "way too much" for a CRX.

>>
>>16079683

Engine doesn't have to be dropped to fix fuel gauge.

Fuel gauge goes from the sending unit in the gas tank directly to the gauge cluster.

So if it aint working, check the wiring and if it's all good, you'll probably have to drop the gas tank (which is a pain) and replace the sending unit with a new one.
>>
>>16081482
by the way the wire that goes from the cluster to the sending unit is yellow (no stripes)

Buying a EM2 this weekend, which is a rare car here in the UK as not many were sold. 96k miles and 12 months MOT for £550.

MOT is a minimum road worthiness certificate. you its an annual safety certificate you have to get for any car in the UK

the EM2 is the VTEC version too d17A9 engine I think.

I've been looking into 4th gen TLs with SH-AWD and a 6 speed for daily driving.
Anyone familiar with the supercharging situation for the J37A4? If I can reliably make 400bhp from that engine I'd be happy.
>>
>>16082884
It seems like there isn't any kits specifically for the 4th gen. What about turbocharging?
>>
>>16082908
Lel that would be even more of a hassle, the J37 has integrated headers with the cats bolted right on

I figured a Rotrex C30 centrifugal unit on the pulley side of the engine sending air to the intake side through an intercooler would be pretty simple to set up
My biggest concern is tuning without resorting to an aftermarket ECU
>>
>>16082942
Why would you be concerned about the ECU when you have to custom fabricate the kit anyways?
>>
>>16082976
Because forced induction is gonna run like ass on a modern car unless you tell the ECU how much more fuel it needs to inject for all the extra air, assuming we'll be shoving in more air past its preset limit

For some reason brakes wont bite until 1/3rd down, and wont really bite until halfway. Combined with worn original rotors and stock aftermarket pads from PO, I had to mash that pedal into the floor.

For maximum clench, try to imagine pressing the pedal 65% of the way and still not having enough braking power.

And you still bought it... Pray its not hard to get to wiring that is burning shit. Also check around cv an balljoints for wear, though it could be a power steering issue causing the whining.

Depends, how well do you understand engine brake turns.
>>
>>16089116
i understand engine braking but engine brake turns?

Im assuming you mean engine brake to turn instead of actually braking so yes.
>>
>>16089171
Basically yes. You do this to get less understeer going into the turn. Getting out without trouble turning down hill is where you can only learn from experience. Also get used to using hand break going to a stop down hill to completely stop you. Though my experience with fwd driving in winter is ice. I've only drove in nc and in Missouri. Missouri has lots of black ice in winter.
Just remember to hit the throttle about a third into the turn at least and your good.
>>
I've been looking at Honda Fits as a DD. I want something small, fun to drive, enough space I can sleep in the back now and then. But I really want an rsx and think fits are piss ugly. should I get an rsx which I absolutely loved test driving or suck up and get a fit which seems to fit my needs better? I'd imagine I could still fit in an RSX okay with the seats down, though I haven't read much of people actually doing it while I've heard plenty of fit owners doing that. I feel like I'm acting like a stupid highschool getting the car I think looks sick instead of the one that I probably should get but I really liked how the rsx drives.
