I'm looking for a reliable and cheap truck to buy, so far I'm thinking of a toyota Tacoma but are there any other trucks that I should be looking at?
>>
Silverado, f150, ram 2500
>>
>>16048016
4x4?
Or 4x2?
Toyotas of any year and mazdas before 1994 or after 2001 are great at both

D21 is your best bet if you're not going with a yota
>>
>>16048050
D21 is absolute shit and suffers the same issues as 240sx's.
>>
Cheap toyota trucks are less reliable than you might think. People in the US put very high value on them if they are under 150,000 miles. If you are spending less than 5 grand I'd probably get a lower mileage domestic truck.
>>
>>16048016
for small trucks the tacoma is good.

personally, I am thinking of trading my acura for a 4.0l 4x4 extended cab ford ranger with a 5 speed.
>>
What do you guys haul that wouldn't fit in a station wagon? Apart from you moms ofc.
Americans, man...
>>
there are about 4 and a half billion ck/silverado's and SUV offshoots in the world, an infinite number of replacement parts for cheap, and decently reliable

toyotas are good but they aint cheap brother
>>
>>16048071
Why don't you like your acura

Dirt bikes.
>>
>>16048072
a lawnmower or snow blower, a couch, a dresser, a bed, you can't put an engine crane in the back of a station wagon, hay, dogs like the open air, welding equipment, bikes are easier to fit, dirt bikes, longer wheelbase is better to tow

but honestly trucks are just fun to drive and really satisfying.
>>
>>16048079
it's a good car, but it is rather dull. and if I keep spending more time driving my f250 instead of the acura it kind of defeats the purpose of having a car as a DD. It is just boring. I like trucks and muscle cars and shit more.
>>
>>16048063
Kek, good one anon.

Drive one for two years and then say the same thing.

>Pro tip: you won't
>>
>>16048072
our roads are shit, truck suspension is really nice on the potholes, cracks, endless construction

never again will i rattle my noggin driving down the street with corolla suspension
>>
>>16048103
Sorry i know enough about good vehicle design to stay away from shit nissans.
I owned a 240sx that was nothing bur issues and i left it parked in a field because it was shit.
D21 is no better
Shit electeonics
Cheap build quality
Shit interior
Poorly designed
No thanks

Do it. that's what I have.

What year, though? 2007+ are notoriously expensive but do have a good road value. Plus very easy to work on and the plastic valance is a plus above the older models with metal, dentable shells. Stock is great for everything a trucc is supposed to do. And you can always make it better.
>>
>>16048119
>that 4 runner in the background
I got a little stiffy
>>
>>16048122
I am thinking about a 93-2002. they are cheaper. how bad is the 3.0? I would rather have an OHC 4.0 but those aren't cheap and I am a bit worried about having 3 timing chains.
>>
Op, ford rangers are great, i've owned two.

Currently have a chevy s10 zr2 and it is a tank. Not the fastest but it just keeps chugging
>>
>>16048072
Dead deer, dead elk, ATV, in-bed tent, canoe, 2 kayaks, horses/horse trailer, appliances, industrial lawnmower. Thinking of getting a motorcycle soon as well.

Even when I'm not hauling, I get a comfortable ride and great seats that isn't as bad on gas as people think.

From what I hear from my neighbour, he gets significantly reduced towing power and lack of 4x4 with the 3.0. The trade off is that he gets 1 extra MPG on city and 2 extra MPG on highway. It's also an I-4 so no OHCs. Also, on my 2010, I think it's a timing belt - not a chain. Unfamiliar with the 3rd generation Rangers, though.

>>16048191
Nice runner wheels. Am jealous I can't find any for cheaper than $800 here... Also, congrats on keeping that underside rust to a definite minimum. Why not skid plates, though?
>>

Or you can get an old Silverado / F-150 that does V8 at something like 220HP.
Alternation on cylinders and duel injection means a smoother engine and lasts longer. But it creates more engine power and can't be done with less cylinders

Old US made engines were notoriously reliable for these reasons and didn't have much black sludge on them even after towing twice their weight for 10 years. Try getting that in a modern engine.
>>
>>16048256
that plus torques

>>16048237
that's what I thought. I really like the looks of the 94-97 model years. My buddy used to have a 5 speed, lifted, 4x4 rcsb in green that I used to drive all the time.

>>16048291
The VG is shit.
If it were worth the extra weight and the extra whopping 15hp, people would buy them. But they dont. They get a shitty KA. Which is worse than the G6 and 22re and ford 2.3.
People will ALWAYS buy a toyota V6 knowing the issues before even considering a VG.
Always
>>
>>16048309
the 2.3 is kind of shit when combined with 4x4 and any little bit of a lift.

I didn't know the wheels were anything special, didn't they come stock? I'm definitely surprised the salted roads here haven't chewed through the bed or the floors yet too. Definitely going to take care of it. No skid plates because the only reason it's lifted and has oversized tires is from the previous owner. I really don't do much offroading so I'm waiting until I need new tires to take it off the blocks and get smaller tires
>>
>>16048266
I do too. Like the guy's above lifted, mint trucc, the old boxy style and grills is something I associate with autumn highway driving and spring mudding. Looks amazing.
However, my 2010 has a cute little nose and better gas mileage. Also costs cheaper to insure what with the crash rating and other bullshit. Also what I always bring up (the plastic valance).
What's wrong with your vintage red crawler? I'd probably give up my Ranger to drive that vehicle on the daily.

>>16048330
>stock tyres
>oversized tyres
wat.jpeg lol
>previous owner
Ah, gotcha. Take it off roading once and see if you can get any enjoyment out of it. I mean, this thing is built for the clearance and the Rangers have naturally armoured differentials compared to other vehicles anyway so you don't have to worry about the occasional rock hit. Just don't go too deep into the mud!
Fuck that grill is smexy.

Had a 98 2wd 5spd manual. 4.0l sohc if i remember correctly, (my first truck as a matter of fact)

I sold it at 310,000 kms because it was rusted out and had a broken sway bar from drifting thru potholes.
Ran great till the day i sold it and all i ever did to it was replace a thermostat

Had an '04 4x4 auto which was nice, but i wasnt prepared to modify or beat on it as i was selling it again soon after i was finished a course in that area.
Was only really highway/snow driving but it was great too. Fords handle cold well

I have special reaction images for moments like these.
Also, why would you remove the blocks and tyres. That thing looks fucking amazing lifted from the front and the tyres belong on a lifted F-150. If the previous owner knew what he was doing with the rear diff., then it wouldn't even take too much mileage off.

[spoiler]take a hammer and block of wood and make angle the eyes angre.

the first week of owning pic related I literally pulled some big 2016 fucking crew cab DODGE RAM truck out of a 5 foot ditch.

The dude was ex military out hunting bear, he said he "reached for his drink" and drove his brand new truck into a ditch. He was in a state of panic, miles and miles from even cell service let alone other people, said he was out there for several hours before i showed up (i was out fishing)

this is why you need a truck

putting shit on blocks just increases wear on parts that ordinarily wouldn't recieve it. i dont need the lift or big tires so why put extra wear on shit. i get about 15 mpg so im pretty sure no one cared about the rear diff

>>16048557
it's the highest trim and shit so sadly is the vacuum operated, pic related. if it ever goes out ill try and swap to a manual if its not too much trouble
>>

15mpg city is normal for a stock ranger, tho.

I love seeing those old dashes. 4x4 buttons and slide scale temperature control. Good times.

Yeah, that's the same with most of the modern 4x4s. Knobs instead of stick shifter.

I looked into switching the knob for a stick in my Ranger but it might require another hole to be drilled in the floor panels. Check if you need that (as everything was less compact in the old truccs) but I don't think the switch would be worth it.

I've settled on the fact that the drivetrain electrical components would be the first to go in my Ranger. another reason to rustproof it harder in the winter, i guess.

Pic related.
There's a 1980s 2500 suburban outside my work right now with the outter locking 4wd mechanism. As nostalgic as those were, just be glad that your shifter isn't ACTUALLY "manual".
