Also a bit of news from a friend of mine who works at Hyundai over there in South Korea.

Hyundai has been in plans of building a Tesla Model S rivaling car since 2015. He's saying it's probably going to be given a green light by the end of this year. Not sure how true it is.

Quick history lesson for Japanese people with amnesia: Japan started making cars post-war since the 50's. Japan literally copied American/Euro cars down to the bolt until mid 60's. Their cars were reputed to be shit in this period and they were the butt of automotive jokes in America and Europe.

Since the 70's Japan start copying less and quality becomes okay (where Korea is right now kinda). In the 80's-90's they gain respect and contend as one of the best carmakers. In 00 and 10's they are just stable good car makers, but they aren't in the top of the world anymore like they used to.

Korea started making cars seriously in the early 80's. Korea's stage in carmaking is in Japan's 70's early 1980's right now (starting to gain serious following and respect as a carmaker, but not yet in the top stage).

Also, Japan really stopped copying foreign cars in the late 80's early 90's. So for 40 rough years they were happily copying foreign cars. That is not a "short period"

Of course Korea was making parts of cars in the past (contract with Toyota and Mazda), but Korea never made a "serious car" (as you somehow mocked) until 1975 with the Pony.

Also, Hyundai hasn't been shit since at least the early 2000s. Build quality isn't quite on par with the Japanese brands, but they're very well done for what you pay. Affordable, sensible vehicles. You know, like Japanese cars used to be.
