It really depends, I've never paid over $1,000 for a car. I've had like 7 so far. It started out just buying what I could afford. Had a 91 Buick Riviera for my first car. Drove awesome for 3 years and I sold it for a bit more than I paid. On my second car I realized I could make some money and have been buying/selling cheap cars as a hobby since. My daily driver is an 01 Pontiac Grand Prix SE I bought for $290, put about $120 of parts into it with at most 3 hours of work (I knew I would have fix some stuff when I bought it btw) and it runs like a dream. I could easily find something for under $800 with nothing to fix that will run without needing work.
You just need to know where to look. Auctions are awesome, but you need a good eye. That said there's always a chance something will break or maybe somethings hidden. On my cars I've never had anything break so bad that would make payments a better option. I mean I could have my car break down and buy another one for 2 months worth of payments.

I know :( but the used car market is so absolutely shut right now and I was losing $300 a month by only having the bus when my car broke down so it was damned if I do, damned if I dont.
At least it's a car I know I will have for another 10 years without any repairs needed.

If you have to take a loan out on a vehicle then you are a failure with money.
Most of you are failures with money.

Damn, you still have to pay it off though right? You can't just cancel payments after a few months. What are you trying to get?
Bought 2 used cars, then bought brand new truck recently. Feels good to have nice things
