Hello /dbt/! I'm looking for some information, I know a few people here are into Supermoto's.

I really like the supermoto style of riding, in terms of it's looks and actual riding style/stance.

I don't need alot from this bike, my only requirement is able to do California highway speeds, which is around 80-85. I can easily fund some upgrades for it, the obvious higher gearing, and possible a big bore kit/exhaust, for the simple things.

This bike would be my daily driver and weekend canyon runs.

Right now I'm mainly looking at the Drz400sm, and a wr450f, to put a dual sport kit on and get it plated. Is there anything else I should take into consideration?

Also, is the ktm 690 SMC any good? I assume it's akin to other ktm's.

Thanks guys!
>>
>>16043695
I'd go with the KTM as I'd trust it the most to do freeway speeds.

Then again, I'm going on the freeway with a Ninja 250.
>>
>>16043710
Same! Current bike a higher geared 04 ninja 250, tops out between 90-100, not sure exactly as my speedo is a tad off, if I could get a sumo to do that, I'd be set.
>>
>>16043695
Any of those will handle 80-85 just fine.
>>
A dealer near me is selling a Ducati S2r for 3k. Would this be a good first bike? The bike is on consignment and the dealer doesn't have the maintenance history. What do?
>>
I really want a Ninja 300, everybody in real life says its great and fast enough for motorways and overtaking and still is a fuel sipper for commuting but then all you fags say its shit and I will get bored of it.

I don't know what to do.

You know your bike has timing belts and not chains. They need to be replaced every 2 years or 15k miles. These belts are not like car belts which can last 100k.

Kinda cool adjusters I guess, but they get in the way of the tire change by clamping on the inside flange of the swingarm. Going to make some titanium plates instead of the clamps that sit in notches on the end of the swingarm to get around this. The plates will double as hangers for a spooled rear stand, to get away from swingarm spools. Ran out of time for the quick change axle, it'll be a winter project

yeah feels super rewarding. makes it worth it just for that. it's always struck me as kind of embarrassing to stomp a gear and drop the clutch. just seems sloppy. engine behavior very distinctive when you do it too
>>
finally, i've been away from my bike for 6 days and now I can take it to for a ride
>>
>>16044464
idk how to describe it accurately, but it takes some practice to rev match with the front smooth

my front brake lever was broke in half for a while so I got used to 2 fingers. kinda hold your wrist a bit at an angle and you can smoothly brake and rev match then just ease onto brakes. Control the rev more with your thumb webbing area I guess. learning you might hold the throttle or get too much front brake. just practice somewhere empty

for the rear brake it's pretty similar to a car. You can combine them whenever you feel comfortable

You don't need an anchor on the handlebar, gorilla gripping the bars causes arm pump and does not benefit you at all, it actually makes you more likely to crash.
Pointer and middle finger are brake fingers, use all 3 for clutch and pinky as a stopper (should have your clutch set up so it completely engages just as it touches your pinky)

>You don't need an anchor on the handlebar
you do because otherwise where does stability in your braking force come from? it's really hard to maintain a steady modulation without something somewhere to base that application of force off of.

nobody's saying you need to lock up your arms and get all tensed up, but there's no point in even blipping under braking if you let up your braking force while doing it, or even worse, lock up the front from inconsistent application.
>>
>>16044564
grip the tank with your knees or you will go over. your arms are not strong enough to keep you steady and you will lock the front if you need to do a 150 - 0 emergency brake
>>
>>16043775
The main reason to not get a ninja300 is because of how overpriced it is. A beginner doesn't need a fancy shiny bike. Just get an older 250 for $1500 and ride that for a few months. There is literally fuck all difference between the two. Comparatively speaking they are both snails compared to a proper 600 so trust me when I say that the 50ccs doesn't fucking matter. And don't get memed by the RC 390 either or the r3. These bikes are all complete overpriced piles of junk. Older Ninja250 or if you're ballsy, a sv650. Period.

The guy I bought the bike from was a long time rider and told me that's what I should do. He said gave him better control over the blipping and he had small hands. Maybe he was just giving me the finger sublimely? I dunno. But I'm gonna practice 2 finger fo sure now. Thx guys.
>>
>>16044570
Braking power doesn't originate from the fingers and end at the shoulders though. It begins with the fingers and ends at the wrist. The only point is that you need to maintain controlled, consistent braking force while also modulating your wrist while rev matching. That's why it's important to have a firm, stable grasp on the bars themselves. Ie two fingers on the brakes, rest on the throttle
>>
>>16043872
Bro neither of those are good deals. And what exactly does "full maintenance" even mean? Have the valves been inspected/adjusted yet? That is literally the only maintenance that needs to be done outside of replaceables. Don't buy into this "maintenance service record" shit because the only maintenance you're going to need on a bike with 30k miles is a valve inspection which will cost several hundred dollars. Regardless, those are both needlessly overpriced. Just buy an 03 Gixxer 1000 for $4k

30k doesn't matter unless the bike hasn't been taken care of. i don't want to buy a 30k mile bike that hasn't had its oil changed in 20k miles. both bikes i'm looking at have established paper trails for oil changes and other maintenance. the 10r has had a stator replaced, fork seals, and valves adjusted. receipts for all of this.

still talking to the guy with the cbr (he says he did most of his wrenching himself) but these prices are really good deals for the model year in my area.

Everyone seems to have an opinion on the ideal amount of fingers and what you can/can't do if you don't use exactly the fingers that they use (because they're the best rider in the world). While I agree, I like 1 and 2 finger braking (Forefinger preference if I finger braking).

It's really just down to personal preference.

i get your point, but you can't really base your riding habits off of top-level riders. these are guys who have spent more time on bikes in a year than most people in this thread have their entire lives. they're going to make any minor idiosyncrasies work and work well because they're incredibly talented and experienced.

i don't think it's a stretch to say that there is an optimal method to ride for the average human beings among us.
>>
>>16044646
that's where the receipts come in handy. why is someone changing oil on a bike they don't ride?

300s are objectively a fair bit faster than 250s, you are talking about a 20% difference in displacement. They're not earth shatteringly fast anyways but you can't say it's nothing, and more relevantly the newer small bikes generally have considerably less shitty torque curves that make them ride better in traffic.

Used 250s are not necessarily that cheap everywhere, you shouldn't just decide to buy one because some cunt on /o/ said it was the best deal without actually shopping around. I wouldn't pay three times as much for a brand new 300 over a 250 as a learner bike because you want to be able to say you didn't buy a supersport as your first bike but it could be fairly close between a 250 that hasn't been beaten to shit and a used or old stock 300 if you have any intention of keeping the thing for city commuting or whatever.
>>
>>16044653
to keep it in good condition, when a bike is in storage the oil should be changed every 6 months and you should run a heat cycle on the engine at least once a month to ensure no moisture has built up inside from condensation

I need a bunch of bolts to put fairings on my CBR. Do I buy a bike-specific fairing bolt kit which should have everything I need for $20, or a universal japanese sport bike hardware kit (270pc) for $55. That would probably have most of what I need and a lot of extra but might not have some specialty fasteners.
>>
>>16044660
okay that's the mechanical reason, but if someone isn't riding their bike, it stands to logic that they don't particularly care about it. do you know anyone who's let a bike sit around for 5 years without being started but still gets its oil changed?
>>
>>16044647
I'd agree, in particular a method that allows you to cover the brakes at all times like 1 or 2 fingers is ideal in my opinion.

But if you have a preferred method and if it's safe, if you are good and practice your braking...it's not like there's a problem, some people just feel better doing one or the other.

I can't imagine 1 finger braking with only the middle finger, but that's what my brother prefers. So I just wouldn't necessarily say somebody NEEDS to brake in a way that makes them uncomfortable because that's not gonna help either.
>>
>>16044627

Here is the thing. It's true that technically 30,000 miles does not mean much on a motorcycle but the reality is that the market does not feel the same way. 30,000 is a lot as far as buying a pre-owned motorcycle goes and it should only be done if you can get a great deal on it. $7k is far from a great deal and way too much for a 2010 ZX10R with 30k miles, even with "maintenance records" which is mostly a meme because of how reliable these bikes are.

This is just from two minutes of searching in my area and these are far better value purchases for a similar price.

With that said, if you have the money and don't give a shit, go for it.

interesting points, i'll have to consider it. i have been watching the market for a while though, and these prices do seem -- for my area -- to be well below the norm for their condition. there are two explanations to this that i can see:
>a
i don't know what i'm talking about and haven't been watching for long enough. definitely a distinct possibility
>b
we ride year-long where i am. i've never lived anywhere it snows so i can't confirm independently but i have heard that prices tend to decrease dramatically as the riding season ends and people pack up for the winter. are those prices you would see in spring in your area as well?

Maybe if it's next to the ocean. Beware of generalizations. We don't all live in the same climate. I've got many yard sitters (in humid SC no less) running without later incident which sat in nasty conditions. Some were low mileage, some medium, a few high. Dunno about yanks.
Here in skippyland we've had legislation to inhibit it.
Don't immunise your kids, childcare centres shun you.
Don't immunise your kids and on welfare, welfare cut.
Work in healthcare and advocate non-immunisation, face charges.

No legislation to focus on shitty vloggers, sadly. They need a fucking good tasing. One of those tasings where you need your partner to step in when your taser goes flat, and have to recharge it before recommencing the Great Tase.
>>
>>16045402
No we don't ya fucking screwdriver, we have legislation that stopped ethylmercury being used as a preservative in vaccines despite there being literally no evidence to say that it causes autism.

They did it just to shut morons up.

If your kids werent immunised and you tried to put them in school with my kids i would be petitioning the school to have them expelled.

Can you guys explain to me what this shit means? What is a "Full wiseco piston rebuild" or a "V Stacks" or a " Billet cams titanium valves".

is this a modded GSX-R engine?

http://providence.craigslist.org/mcy/5809303936.html
>>
>>16045556
Wiseco make aftermarket pistons. They are reputable.
>>
>>16045556
V stacks is "velocity stacks". Aftermarket intakes. Google can help you more here
>>
>>16045575
Yes but what is the significance of those changes? Does the engine produce more hp than stock?
>>
>>16045583
are you an AMA racer? the fuck do you care about horsepower on a literbike for
>>
>>16045556
It's just lingo man, sportbike motors are notoriously expensive to rebuild, so you don't usually see new pistons and liners in a motor. Wiseco pistons means he spent some money instead of just trying to reuse everything he could. The stacks (velocity stacks) are just something that's often changed on a motor to fine tune for power.

Sure why not, that means i can call my 300's engine modded and i will fit in with the cool kids.
>>
>>16045556
it means it was thrashed
>>
>>16045588
something doesn't add up though. claims 20k miles but the engine's obviously been rebuilt. chinese fairings too. was probably in a pretty decent wreck. stay away
>>
>>16045588
I see. So it indicates that there was something wrong with the Pistons since he swapped em?
>>
>>16045590
stay away from the cool kids
>>
>>16045556
piston rebuild means top end rebuild. in a bike that's piston, rings, and pin.

billet cam means cam was lathed out of a billet piece of steel. pretty sure all cams are billet.. billet is a heavily used meme word.

titanium valves means valves made out of titanium.

vstacks is probably aftermarket intake runners.

>modded
yes, but barely.
>>
>>16045597
20k is a lot for a sport bike.
>>
>>16045600
It's not a 2 stroke, top end includes the valves and shit.
He flogged the fuck out of that bike/maintained it poorly, blew up the top end and rebuilt it, the bottom end is probably fucked but still has the bike running.
>>
>>16045606
maybe if you're the average sportbike rider and never change your oil

>>
>>16045586
I don't give a shit, I am just trying to figure out why the fuck this motor was rebuilt. I don't know if these are common "performance mods" (I know faggots that drive cars like to get different pistons and shit) or if this faggot blew up his previous motor which is why it has all this shit done to it. If it's the latter, I am probably going to steer clear
>>
>>16045620
he blew it up and rebuilt it. might have crashed it as well from hte looks of the plastics. stay away from that shit
>>
>>16045611
t. commuter

>>16045610
top end is not a head rebuild.
>>
>>16045598
No, he wanted more power. It was probably taken to the drag strip regularly, and the owner was willing to spend $3-5k on a motor build and lots of dyno time. Honestly if you don't know any of this you shouldn't buy anything with a modified motor

One thing I can't stand is morons saying any bike that's been used for something other than filming boring webms 'abused'. My Daytona has 14k miles of redline running on 5 track in the Texas heat and just keeps on chugging, and dynos dead on what a new one would. They're built to take it
>>
>>16045620
>why was his motor rebuilt
the same reason all motors get rebuilt

do you really expect a used sport bike to not be thrashed? lol. especailly a giixer bro!
>>
>>16045628
t. someone who doesn't bounce his bike off the rev limiter all day long for shits and giggles. but yes, i ride my bike as a DD rain or shine... if that's a meme now
>>
>>16045620
If it has accompanying dyno readouts, it was likely a project performance bike.

If it doesn't, someone likely hurt that bike.

I used to run wiseco in my RS, but I'd go through a piston every 12,000kms.

>>16045630

>>16045630
>>16045636

Cool. I'll probably buy it then. My current bike is a ninja 250 so it should be a nice upgrade.
>>
>>16045635
the rev limiter is there for a reason.
>>
>>16045600
Most cams are not billet, most are cast. Even aftermarket cams are often cast or just regrinds on the factory cam. You only find billet stuff for super popular modding platforms like gsxrs and busas.
>>
>>16045646

>Compared with other motorcyclists, lane-splitting motorcyclists were more likely to ride on weekdays and during commute hours, use better helmets, and travel at lower speeds. Lane-splitting motorcyclists were also less likely to have been using alcohol and less likely to have been carrying a passenger.
>Also compared with other motorcyclists involved in a collision, lane-splitting riders were less likely to suffer head injury (9 percent versus 17 percent), torso injury (19 percent versus 29 percent) and fatal injury (1.2 percent versus 3 percent).

I'm looking for some motorcycle boots. I'm trying to understand the different types of construction methods and safety features implemented in various types of riding boots but I can't find anything very informative on the web. I'm looking for a boot that offers as much protection as possible but is fashionable and comfortable to wear out and about. I can't seem to find any sort of comfortable, casual looking boot that appears to have the same rigid, lateral bracing found in a motocross boot. I would think the safest riding boot would implement some sort of metal/carbon fiber vertical structure on either side of ones ankle to prevent it from rolling. Let me hear your opinions and insights about motorcycle boot engineering. Boots in pic are the closest to what I think I'm searching for. http://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/forma-adventure-low-boots
