Fiat and Volkswagen are the worst brands. Subaru is mid-low tier along with Nissan and Mitsubishi.

Volkswagen is better than most, never in my life have I ever had a Chrysler product last more than 10k without a breakdown, even before Chrysler bought out Dodge, the 68 dodge dart broke down every oil change because the fuel pump had a plastic propeller that was extremely brittle. The new Toyota's don't last for shit either, at least when my mk4 needs something, its either MM bolt or a Torx bit to do it.

My friend has a Forester that I have been maintaining for the last year. It has 250k miles on it. She neglected the shit out of it. I did a full fluid flush, brakes, belts and changed the radiator because the OEM ones are plastic and crack easily lol. The car is fucking bulletproof. 250k miles - no timing belt or water pump change. Only AC belt snapped. And only just recently is the drivetrain acting up after years and years of city driving.

I heard about the blown gasket thing in the 2.5 engines but really I think most of that has been improved since the mid 2000s-2010.

The only real downside is changing sparkplugs. You gotta pull the whole fucking air filter and batter out just to reach them easily. Other than thay they are as solid as most Japanese cars built to survive even the shittiest of owners.

FWIW I own a 240sx and daily drive a Chevy and don't particularly care for Subaru enough to ever buy one. Looking for a used WRX would be a nightmare - not because the brand is bad but because the fanboys are learning to drive on factory fast awd toys for manchildren that would total their car in an actual race that isn't an improvised rolling start on your local highways.

Peace.

I love Subarus, I had an STi for 65k miles and never had problems, but I did my research and even datalogged often. I left the Subie scene a few years ago but I know of some issues:

>Problem 1
When you do a clutch dump or ramp up on the power too quickly, what happens in most cars? The wheels spin.

Now, when you have a good AWD system all that happens is gears in the drivetrain (trans or diff) absorb the shock. The Subaru 5-speed was designed before putting 300+ to the wheels was common in Subaruland, and it is prone to breakage, especially pre-2004 models before they beefed it up a little.

>Problem 2
The internal wastegate in some Subaru OEM turbos was designed to accommodate stock boost and little more. If you turned up the boost to 20+ psi and had a fully-catless exhaust, the wastegate could not flow enough and you'd get "boost creep," where you'd get pressures over what you tuned for (e.g. 24 psi) which would fuck shit up.

>Problem 3
There are things called "filtered banjo bolts" in several places. I believe the most important one is in the oil line feeding the turbo. They were well-intentioned - filter the oil before it reaches the precious turbos. But Subaru never talked about them in the owners manual and many people never replaced / cleaned / removed them and they'd get clogged - starving the turbo of oil, overheating it, and leading to many types of failure.

>Problem 4
Premature headgasket / piston ring / cylinder wall wear on certain models. Power mods would quicken this effect. If I bought a used turbo Subaru today I would get a high-performance engine rebuild very quickly, even before the usual mods.

How long does a turbo last in a non-STI WRX?

A friend is looking at a 2008 WRX with 120k miles, will he have to replace the turbo soon?
>>
>she
as if a women knows shit about cars, come the fuck on anon.

But yeah she right, subaru a shit

Blown head gaskets were a problem with the earlier 2.5s. I had someone here once claim they were also a problem with the 3.0s and maybe also a 3.6. I put 40K miles on my first Forester and 120K miles on my second Forester and never had a problem. My 3.6 Outback has only 25K miles, but it's running like a smooth, powerful top.

Even if they blow it's only a $1500 repair. My wife's Mini has been in the shop every 36K miles to have the heads pulled and de-coked. $750. So far we're in for $1500 and headed for another $750 next summer. I won't even go into all the other expenses - it's a BMW.

Now heat shields on Subarus....that's another matter.
>>
>>16043524
>There are things called "filtered banjo bolts" in several places.
I've never heard of these before. Seems like a pretty big thing to omit from the manual. What interval should they be serviced at?
>>

This is why I will never buy a used manual WRX or even Forester. Too many ricer bois out there abusing the shit out of these cars + glass transmissions = fucked car.

There is a reason these cars have such a terrible reputation and resale value: the young owners.

completely right, i was a mechanic for 6 years and you learned to hate Subarus. theyre just a mess of oil leaks, headgasket issues, and burning your fucking arm changing the oil filter. im surprised the Japanese were stupid enough to go with an engine design that inherently pools oil into one side of the valvecovers constantly

the worst part is theres 10,000,000 JDM ones here in Canada because everyone wants the AWD for winter

Any brand that has young inexperienced tuners wrenching and hooning their cars is going to have it's reliability artificially hindered. Remove WRX's and STI's from the equation and the numbers suddenly start to sing a different tune.

As several have already said, no, they're great cars, very easy to work on

There were a couple of issues (head gaskets on Phase I and II EJ25, ringland issues with EJ257, etc.)
but they are very much dependent on good maintenance and not hard to sort out

I've got 175k on my Forester, notorious for HG failure, but when I pulled the motor for a clutch a couple of thousand miles ago they looked great, you just need to be diligent on keeping up with oil and coolant to preserve them.

The main problem is that people treat them like a Corolla because it's japanese, and neglect turns sour very quickly

They are a little fragile but I've been driving mine hard in the Rockies, and offroading fairly frequently, and it's never let me down
Very capable off road and very good driving dynamics for what it is, not to mention extremely practical and suited to my lifestyle
Not to mention it's fun having an alternative motor configuration, almost like a rotary in some ways if you'll forgive me for making the comparison

Can't wait to throw the snow tires on for the winter, with the manual trans comes a god tier 50/50 viscous coupling AWD system, similar to the one found in the legendary e30 325ix

>>16044773
keked pretty good
>>
>>16046317
whoops I used "not to mention" twice in consecutive sentences, just fuck me up

not to mention, our family had a '99 Foz growing up and that fuckin thing was a trooper and a half, went to 300k on the original motor and one HG replacement before we sold it to some kid in good running shape

with airplanes and subarus alike: age and mileage are relevant, but proper care and maintenance are more important
>>
>>16046317
btw, wasn't trying to make the AWD seem more techy than it is- that's the beauty of it -
a very simple but effective mechanical system with no sensors or computers or fwd biased bullshit, just good ole true AWD.

also, I calculate mpg between every fill up, and it comes out to 25mpg on the dot every time, which isn't bad at all considering most of my driving is on the toegay or rolling hills

My 1996 impreza wagon that I got for dirt cheap and have owned for almost 3 years has almost 230k miles and runs like a champ. I've beaten the living shit out of this car hauling ass on dirt roads, taken it off road, pulled out a fucking jeep out of a mudhole, driven it on the beach countless times and it doesn't give a fuck, it has literally never let me down. I don't understand why anyone would ever say they are the worst brand, are you sure she didn't mean ford?

that's another thing, the 1.8/2.2 engined cars from the 90's to 2000's are indestructible

the 2.5s got a bad rep from the head gasket issues but still pretty damn good

there's really nothing overtly wrong with Subaru. If you're in a place where AWD is beneficial they're really the only non shit-tier choice. They're also one of the very few actual Wagons sold in the US

Ah yeah forgot about it, we only got the 2.0 in turboed form in the WRX

But yeah if my head gaskets blow I will be swapping in either a JDM N/A 2.0 or a 2.2 if I can find one for cheap

A complete 2.0 is like $800 and a direct swap into my Forester

That's another great thing about Subarus, parts are very interchangeable, I can swap the suspension and motor from any GD STI into my Forester with no hassle if I want, just have to get the wiring done

>My mechanic told me that Subarus are the worst brand.

Consumer Reports has just released its latest consumer automobile reliability rating results. Buick became the first auto brand from Detroit's Big 3 automakers in three decades Monday to place in the top three in Consumer Reports' annual ranking of the most reliable automobiles. Out of 29 brands, Asian nameplates accounted for seven of the top 10 spots. Lexus was ranked first, with a predicted reliability score of 86, followed by Toyota, Buick, Audi, Kia, Mazda, Hyundai, Infiniti, BMW and Honda. Vehicles sold by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles continued to struggle in the survey with four of its brands — Dodge, Chrysler, Fiat and Ram — occupying the bottom four slots.

There's probably a reason he's selling it for so cheap

It's an independent suspension vehicle, it's not meant for off roading, the articulation is shit and it looks like theres about 6 inches of space before the tires hit the fender
