Initial D had probably the best sound design out of any anime I can think of
Not just from the eurobeat, but the usage of eurobeat was top zozz (the I WANNA DANCE scene cones to mind for me) and the sounds of the cars are actually real too and sound great. The animation got real good later on

I enjoyed season 5, the race between ryosuke and... the guy in the R32, whatever his name was, was one of my favorites. I can understand why some didn't like season 5 though
The show is just super cheesey and charming to me, especially season 1. And I love it

If you're not above fanfiction, there's a series on fanfiction.net called "dreaming of Akina" that's actually a decent account of young Bunta's exploits. The author obviously doesn't know nearly as much about cars as Shigeno, but the plot is better than the actual series in terms of character development, and it takes place over a period of many years.

Nah, they were originally one-off stories printed years and years ago and basically lost until recently when they were reprinted at the end of the last manga paperback. Or at least one of them was.

The second one which was apparently made for animation is questionably canon, but the one where the Emperor Evos raced Impact Blue before racing Dagumi and friends is explicitly non-canon due to that being impossible in the main story's timeline.

There's another NK/IB drama CD that hasn't been adapted (no manga source like Extra Stage 1 has). Night Kids do time attacks but Nakazato refuses battling Shingo no matter how he taunts, Mako and Sayuki think Zack is traumatized of real battles after losing so hard at that point and set up a battle against the R32 guy he lost to in his Silvia back in the day. Even takumi himself, while driving the impreza, statees that he'd have to squeeze every once of potential from his 86 with the new engine just to compete against the impreza. It was just one episode stretched to film the time of "a movie," and you could've easily removed it from the timeline and nothing would've changed since there's no buildup prior, and there's no reference after, it's an isolated continuity.
