well duh

carbon dioxide was always a non issue. if you want to spend the time and money, it's an easy chemical to just grab the fuck out of the atmosphere. no nanomachines, son? plant a try. particulates and NOx from dated cars without emissions control devices, VW diesels, big ass ships and generators, and coal plants is an issue, however

but you won't hear a politician paid off by the big businesses that need to spew smog to live ever say that. cars are the problem, goyim.
>>
>>16031345
>plant a try
*tree
*even though you may want to be growing more motivation the word is "tree"

Trees are basically just huge constructs made of nanomachines if you think about it.
>>
Nobody cares about carbon dioxide, fucktard.
>>
>>16031356
Well, technically correct, a cell could be counted as a nanomachine.
>The best kind of correct.

thank outsourcing for that
its a cost no one seems to count

When you burn the ethanol it turns back into C02.
>>
>>16031388

Ftfy
>>
>>16031589
It's still carbon neutral as long as your source for turning it into CO2 is renewable or nuclear.
>>
>>16031589
And then you turn the CO2 back into ethanol by adding a little bit of electricty

Done perfectly we could keep reusing the same fucking carbon atoms for eternity
>>
>>16031589
you haven't taken the CO2 from the earth but from the atmosphere though. also syntehtic CO2 neutral diesel is already a thing so why would you go back to ethanol.
>>
>>16031363
carbon dioxide cause the world to heat up moron.

look at the damaging effects of the accelerated heating that is going on now.
>>
>>16031682
the heating also increases the natural carbon dioxide emission, I wonder which correlation is stronger.

This is indeed interesting.
If it really is such a simple process and works with such low voltages, one could hook it up directly to solar panels and make your own fuel.

only WWIII can fix this mess.

Never change, murrika.
>>
>>16031761
Negative, that was a 20v supposedly built for group a touring or rally cars. This is a different beast, 16v built by other companies using kit parts. Magnesium valve cover with bosses, because the motor is a stressed member of the chassis. It wouldn't be usable in a full bodied car because there's not enough bottom end to get rolling from a stop in a 800kg car.
>>
>>16031300
If you think about it, this development probably means that oil demand will plummet.

CO2 -> C2H6O

First, where do they get the extra C and Hs from?

Second, it needs electricity. You end up in the same trap as hydrogen... if you use electrolysis, it uses more electricity to produce the hydrogen for a fuel cell car than just powering a battery-electric car directly with electricity.
>>
>>16032404
You could make plastic from hemp. The best part is that that plastic could be decomposed so we don't need to litter the ocean.

READ THE FUCKING ARTICLE YOU RETARD

>Rondinone and his colleagues had put together a catalyst using carbon, copper, and nitrogen, by embedding copper nanoparticles into nitrogen-laced carbon spikes measuring just 50-80 nanometres tall. (1 nanometre = one-millionth of a millimetre.)

>When they applied an electric current of just 1.2 volts, the catalyst converted a solution of CO2 dissolved in water into ethanol, with a yield of 63 percent.
>>
inb4 we destroy the planet by turning all the CO2 to ethanol
>>
>>16033936
We would all die before that happens.
When we start sucking all the CO2 we will have more hydrogen, oxygen and other combustible gasses in the atmosphere. Which in turn will make engine combustion easier and cars will start either misfiring or just outright explode.
>>
>>16033936
wouldn't we destroy it anyway?
>>
>>16033965
I tend to count making it uninhabitable to human life and prone to giant impromptu firestorms as destroying
>>
>>16033968
Well duh, but soon we can share fuel with our shitboxes and be encouraged to spew as much as possible CO2 into the atmosphere
I, for one, am ready

You gonna be that autistic? Fine, I'll match you.

Where do we get fossil fuels? We don't dig them up with just men and pickaxes. We use machines that are powered by electricity and combustion.
WHAAAAAAA? WE'RE BURNING FOSSIL FUELS TO GET MORE FOSSIL FUELS? HOW COULD THAT POSSIBLY PAY OFF?
Because the amount we gain from utilizing the mining equipment is more than the amount we spent in doing so. The energy gained is more than the energy expended, a net positive. Why? Because there's so many goddamn fossil fuels in the earth. But we're spending them faster than they're made and turning them into useless shit like CO2, so we'll eventually run out.

NOW we can harness a tiny amount of electricity, less voltage than the AA battery in your remote control, to gain quite a bit of Ethanol (energy) from an abundant chemical in the air that isn't utilized by anything except vegetation. There's so much of it we consider it a detriment to the planet's health. If they refine the technique further to get an even better conversion rate, they're actually farming more potential energy than the energy they expended to do so. A net positive, just like mining. It isn't "free energy" because it's not limitless, we'll eventually run out of CO2 in the air if we do this enough. And using this energy faster than we can produce it is still a potential problem. The process also requires Hydrogen, not JUST CO2. So you can count the hydrogen atoms into your calculations of "energy spent vs energy received." But Hydrogen is even more bountiful and if, inconceivably, the planet ever ran out of it, we could just farm it from space. We're not really losing anything by burning a bunch of hydrogen because there's so goddamn much of it it's fucking absurd. AND burning the ethanol in a car or other combustion device just releases CO2 back into the air again, which can then be re-farmed into ethanol, creating an infinite cycle of energy conversion that only requires Hydrogen to continue.

HOLD ON A FUCKING MINUTE.
This might have already been said but Im going to say it anyway because Im in a hurry. Because combustion creates carbon dioxide does that mean there is the potential to create fuel from the waste gases of the engine? Just a thought, please educate me

Would be a perfect use for solar and wind. Since the big issue with them is storing the energy they make, it can be stored in ethanol.
Boom, just fixed earth.
>>
> Create solar panels using combustion engines
> Use electricity from said panels to convert Co2 to ethanol
> Use said ethanol to create more Co2 converters
> Repeat until you reach the equilibrium of atmospheric Co2 you want
> You're now left with incredible efficient engines (because the exhaust can efficiently be converted to fuel)
> Resolve energy crisis and the Co2 issue at the same time

according to a new atlas (gizmag)article
there's been several articles like these over the years, along with all those "new battery chemistry found" articles. the staggering majority never get anywhere, a tiny fraction pan out. statistically speaking this isn't going to pan out

if it's still on the radar in two years and doing stuff at an industrial scale, i'll take it seriously

oil industry is already investing in a lot of alternative stuff already, they can read the writing on the way and they want their fingers in everything just in case something in particular sticks. it's dumb to hold onto what is essentially a slowly dying industry, plenty of other companies have gone under that way
