To be fair, if I have a shitbox that runs shit tier conventional, I'm taking it to Walmart for the $20 oil change while I shop.

Cheap oil is $12 a jug
Cheap filter is $3

I'm literally paying the $5 to not get dirty and to go shop while I wait.

However, because oil change prices don't scale in a way that makes sense, I now have to do all of my own because I own a turbo car that requires synth :/

Dude, why?

Even good oil is cheap...
A good filter isnt more than $10.
>>
>>16031138
sounds cool but you still need to drain from the bottom every once and a while, shit will collect down there that will be left with a pump
>>
>>16031207

If you had actually taken a basics science class, you would know that it would not be necessary. There are actual measurements on the pump container that tells how much it is filled.

>shit will collect down there

Shit will only collect on the bottem if your engine has a shitty oil pump and filter. It's the same as fuel filters, it's not that complicated.

No, we get paid $10/hour (California MW) no matter what.
We do get a bonus if we go over calculated sales but it's rare that it happens, at least at my location.
That's basically why we upsell, so we can get that paycheck bonus.

For the shop I'm at, we're $5k down profit budget for the month, so we're trying really hard to upsell.

But, at my shop, we never upsell anything you don't need. It's mostly air filters, coolant flushes, and engine flushes on top of oil changes.

Wait, what? Is changing the oil harder in "normal" cars or something?

In my FD it's insanely easy. Just drive it onto those plastic ramps, place a pan under, unscrew oil cap, take off the bolt on the bottom of the sump, let it drain. Bolt back in, replace filter, add the new oil.

It's so easy. Are other cars harder to or something?
>>
>>16037605
Theres some that are a pain e.g. Suzukis. Those filters are damn near impossible
>>
>>16037472
Are they? I just figured people would believe me if i linked something and ruin their cars
>>
>>16037605
Most cars are designed so oil drain and filter are easy to reach because they intend for them to be accessed often. There are a couple shit cars floating around where the designers were fucktards I guess. I know on Subaru outback/impreza (older ones that are really common) people sometimes accidentally drain the tranny instead of the oil because the oil plug is sort of hidden in comparison

I always pay for oil changes. It's just not worth my time.

The dealership that always did services for the original owner of my mazdaspeed3 offers great pricing for oil changes.

They also give me a nice inspection sheet, hand car wash, free coffee and snacks, and they have Gran Turismo 6 in the show room with 2 steering wheels.

I always tell them to take their time because I love earning more unlocks in their game. I'm pretty sure I'm responsible for 25% of the game progress.

But yeah, I'll pay an extra $10-20 to not waste a saturday under my car.
>>
>>16037605
volkswagens were put in some pretty inaccessible places and apparently on their newer SUVs (including audi) doing anything requires partial disassembly of the front end, some hondas and dodges had things set up in a way that you had to remove the tire, wheel well skirt and battery just to get to the filter.

>fuck around for a few minutes while it finishes draining
>put bolt back in
>pour in 4.4 quarts using a funnel
>pour old oil into bottle, put away tools
>next time i need to go to an auto parts store i grab the old oil
Takes me about 30min but a big part of that is just fucking around. Could get it done in 10 if needed.
>>
>>16037728
Don't get me wrong: When it comes to stuff like a new clutch, motor mounts, aftermarket intake, intercooler, downpipe, suspension, and even smaller things like spark plugs, I don't mind because they'd be way overpriced when it comes to labor if anyone else did it, and I actually enjoy this type of work.

But just a mundane oil change? Meh... I'll leave that to someone with a lift that can get it done in 10 minutes.

seems like the 2000s was just the ultimate low point for american products (fucking nafta). even remington and marlin are decent again.

I work at a walmart TLE, we put fram "filters" on cars all day long. They're still shit. We had one the other day that fram forgot to put a gasket on from the factory and it shat all the new oil all over the ground when they went to start it. Granted, the other tech should have noticed the gasket was missing before putting it on, but it wasn't a cheap filter either, it was the PH10600 which retails for about $9. One generally expects a filter to come with a gasket. If a customer bought that filter and changed their own oil with it then had that happen, we'd be buying them an engine and paying their tow bill.
>>
>>16037929
Had a dirt bag acquaintance who beat on his engine all day, and started noticing it was on the way out: weak compression, ate oil, hesitated at very specific Ron's.

Anyways, I call him a dirt bag because he knew this and took it to a Walmart repair facility for an oil change, and after they got done, he literally drove to the next shopping center over, loosened the drain plug, and drove as hard as possible.

Blows his motor, calls Walmart, gets it towed in, manager sees the plug is missing, fires tech right then and there, and they told him they'd take care of the repair costs.

Fucking dirtbag.

That's why we put torque seal on every drain plug we touch. It keeps the plug from loosening on its own (if for some reason it was damaged and despite being torqued to manufacturer's specs it came out) and would also prove our innocence as it's also a tamper evident seal. The torque seal would have broken when he loosened the plug and made it obvious what he did.

local fast lube places use grey spray paint on the oil filter, drain plug and pan.

When you take off the drain plug it'll remove some of the (shitty) paint and will leave obvious tool marks. Ditto for the oil filter.

What if I just used a vacuum extractor tool, draw out 85% of the oil and drive like a mad cunt, how are they gonna prove that oil was removed if all of their proofing marks are still there? Its not like they can prove they put in the right amount of oil. Especially if the car comes back 3 hours later

"its on a flatbed with a heavy bottom end knock and ZERO oil showing on the dipstick, y'all must've fucked up. There's no other explanation"

Only downfall is newer vehicles without a dipstick. Hard to get the oil out without disassembly.

One of the guys I used to work with did this normally for oil changes. German cars with top mounted oil fiters with dipsticks. Hook up vacuum machine, unbolt oil filter housing. Pull out his phone and play bullshit games for 10 minutes, install new filter, oil and you're done.

Majority of the stores have a bulk Penzoil conventional tank for 5w 30 and 10w 30.

If you request oil other than that, they'll either use quarts off the shelf that you'll have to pay for, or their bulk stock of BIB oils which are cheaper. They also use a mass produced selection of streamlined oil filters from FRAM, which are somehow cheaper than the shittiest FRAM you can find on the shelf.

Both.

They merged a lot of different sized filters with the same thread into one. I can't remember which as it's been years since I worked there, but we used to use off the shelf Fram's, but eventually got these all black ones that merged a lot of the filter numbers together, despite being smaller, or larger filters for the car.

We had to adjust the amount of oil we put in cars because of this.

I'd rather do it myself because I don't trust mechanics, especially apprentice mechanics which are the ones who will actually be doing the oil change.

I don't trust them to remember everything and not fuck up. They always over tighten the drain plug and underfill the oil. Plus, I'm not a nu male so I don't mind getting my hands dirty. Chicks dig it too.

If you're someone who's affluent enough to drive a new car and dealer service it and you're busy with your desk job, then that's fine. Most people like that are nu males, though.
>>
>>16038247
Fram is shit and I'd never trust it. If it clogs, say hello to oil starvation because they're too cheap to put a bypass valve. They also simply don't filter as well with their flimsy filter.

Proper trustable filter brands:

Wix

>Tfw brake fluid reservoir needs to be refilled every 4-6 days because shit's leaking somewhere and I can't find the fucking leak
You have rusted lines that are at their breaking point. Somewhere under your car, the brake line is so thin that pinholes have developed, and every time you step on the brake pedal, fluid literally squirts out onto the ground in a very small stream. You can continue driving it like this until the pressure finally blows out the side of the rusty line and makes a larger hole, at which point you will have absolutely zero braking power and fucking wrap yourself around a pole or rear-end someone at full speed.

Buy 20 feet of new line, take the spool to a mechanic, and tell them to replace your brake lines. This will avoid them jewing you on a "parts" cost of $500+ and you'll only have to pay labor.

Source: me five years ago, I drove the car until the brakes gave out entirely and then engine-braked and ripped my e-brake at every stop light for another month after that.

>>16038756

>>

just because Company A owns Company B doesn't mean B's quality went down the shitter. They usually let them do business as usual and just take a cut of the profits.
>>
>>16039131
Except, you know, when they state that they are merging operations and facilities

>>
>>16039141
It would still be beneficial to manufacture quality products alongside the shit products to create the illusion of choice for the consumer.

It's like when you see a 1L bottle of something for $5 and a 2L bottle for $6.50. Clearly the 2L bottle is the better deal. Why would anyone buy the 1L at that comparatively shitty unit price? But they shipped both on purpose so that consumers would have that train of thought and spend more than they initially meant to, happily thinking "I'm getting a deal"

Fram has the reputation for being cheap shit and Purolator has the reputation for being good and a higher cost to go with it. So car guys will drop the extra bucks on Purolator because it's better, and poorfags and "point A to point B" retards buy fram because they don't care. Both parties are satisfied with their purchase and Fram gets the profits either way.

>I checked your oil level before I changed it and noted on the R.O. that it was already low and judging by the oil quart bottles in your truck also noted it may be consuming oil.

To be fair it was probably your fault. Not due to the oil change mind. However a 240k mile that's probably not used to seeing over 3k and 40% throttle doesn't tend to last long in the hands of a kid seing redline daily. Really it's the fault of the P/O driving like a bitch and letting the engine get slugged up and lazy then you doing one oil change and thinking yep motors 100% clean let's go drifto!
>>
>>16039004
Fug, yeah I need to look again and look harder - there isn't any rust under my car last time I checked (like two months ago). I already got stainless steel brake lines waiting to be installed - no idea how old the rubber lines are so you're probably right. I think the hard line should still be alright.
