Maybe you wash and wax every week, maybe it's that expensive, washable air filter you make sure is always clean, maybe you change your oil every 3,000 miles.

What do you do for your car that doesn't have any immediate benefits?
>>
i drive it 1000 miles a year, ill thank my past self when im 60
>>
>>16030277
>implying you won't total it
>>
I use a sun visor since I park my car outdoors so maybe it'll spare the dash over the years.
>>
>>16030293
I wish the previous owner of my car had done that.
>>
>>16030313
Yeah I really hate cracked dashes and steering wheels that fall apart. Too bad the steering wheel on my car already started disintegrating from humidity or something though...
>>
I redline on every on-ramp, does that count?
>>
>>16030274
I wax my headlights, so the protective coating on them doesn't wear off and oxidize over time

Not revving up my engine when its cold

Sure thing, champ.
>>
>>16031639
How?
>>
>>16031561
So many stolen cars here in Milwaukee. Good idea, thanks
>>
>>16031858
Running at such cold temp puts most of your wear on the engine. If you just sit and let it idle it'll spend forever at those temps.
>>
>>16032170

Sorry you have to live in a third world country.

Sounds reasonable, only takes about ten seconds at most for engine to become fully lubricated from sitting even on the coldest days. I don't drive it before then but sitting for 15 minutes seems like overkill, just plug it in if youre that worried.
>>
>>16032250

The idea is to get the engine to operating temp before you drive it there, tiger.

I don't believe you fully understood what was being said, it is better to drive the vehicle while raising temp than to let it sit. Sitting only prolongs the vehicle being in the danger area.

You're pants on head retarted

Question, had an old Nissan whose manual stated that it needed a 10 minute warmup on cold days... Was is because it was old and carburated or you have to warm up even modern cars?

Mechanical engineer here. Any well designed engine will have oil squirters or some other way of circulating oil. Idling a car will not drain the cylinders dry, that's ridiculous.

The point of warming up is because your engine's parts are made of different materials and they expand at different rates as the engine warms up. The engine is designed around its operating temperature.
>>
>>16033117
The engine will also reach operating temperature faster under load.

Maintain an imaginary 3.5k (petrol) redline until it's hot.
>>
>>16032534
>>16033014

Take the oil you put in your car and leave it in a freezer overnight. Pour a little bit out and try to tell yourself it looks thin and lubricious enough to protect gaps between metal components smaller than your finger nails.

If you're in flat country, then idling for a minute or so and then bringing the car up to temp by gently driving is fine. If you're like me and live at the bottom of a big hill, doing the same thing would be impossible because I have to work the engine hard to get up the hill and out onto the main roads. It's the same deal if you live mere minutes from a highway. You cannot put your engine under such conditions while the oil is still thick and viscous unless you're fine with increasing wear.
>>
>>16033718
Thank fully we have multi weight oils these days....
>>
>>16033730

A 0w20 oil is still thicker when cold than a straight 60 weight oil is at operating temp.

Compare 0w30 when cold to 10w60 (same as straight 60 when warm) at operating temp.

Last year's winter, we had mexican car thieves that would go around looking for unoccupied cars warming up. They'd break in and drive off.
>>
>>16030274
I waxed my car every few months with Meguiar's Gold Class and that kept the clear coat well protected. 20 years later the car still looks new paintwise. I'm glad better and easier to use synthetic waxes came out, and I use that with my new car. I know waxing works especially in a vicious environment.

In between waxes, I will occasionally hose off the car.

During winter months, I rinse off the bottom of the car to wash off the corrosive salts. That seems to work because I have far less "severe-looking rust" than neighbors who don't bother. Rinse uses up about one gallon of hot water as I spray from a pump sprayer. It doesn't take that much spraying if you first swipe off crusted ice/snow.
>>
Once a year before winter I wirewheel and repaint any chips through the finish on the undercarriage.

If the temperatures are going below roughly freezing, I use the block heater with a timer so that it's warm in the morning. I can't help it when I'm away from home, but I like it when possible.

Oil change early every time because I run it hard.
>>
>>16036759
Does that actually keep the rust away? Are the roads salted where you're at?
>>
>>16031561

>Warming up your car

Scientifically proven that just driving is better for engine and reaches operating temperature faster

get a block heater if your cold

that's that Chicago suburb right?

not him, but yes it does, some kind of spray on rubber would be best for long term ignoring but straight spray paint will still protect it for a year or two

Do you nerds have any idea how bad it is to idle for 15 minutes every day?

Only redlining a cold engine is worse than long duration idling. Drive off within 10 seconds of starting and then keep above 1500 but shift early until warm. Dont be afraid to redline if its warm though, good fuel flow will clean your valves.
>>
>>16030274
I use Amsoil. And the benefits are immediate and long term.
>>
>>16038579
>implying it takes 15 minutes to warm up (not to perfect temp but enough to not fuck the car)

Please tell me how bad it is to idle. It's not like I don't idle all day in traffic anyway.
>>
>>16030277
wow cool you'll have an old piece of shit car!

if i offered you a mint condition 1972 chevy nova would you give a shit? they drove like SHIT, like all cars from that era. you'd just jam modern shit in there

>if i offered you a mint condition 1972 chevy nova would you give a shit?
yeah, that would be awesome. 350 or 396?

>>16031328
How did you clean your headlights and what wax did you use? My car is parked outside in the PNW all year long.
>>
>>16031328
I've always heard you shouldn't get wax on the glass, and that it'll cloud up the glass and make it less transparent. Do you use the same wax you put on your paint or something special?
>>
>>16031328
What? I thought you were supposed to polish them when they started to yellow out.
