Redpill me on the RX8.
>>
>>16030202
It's good.
>>
>>16030202
Not for bus riders or a good first car.
>>
Apex seals, 2.75 doors, sub 300hp, plastic engine covers.
>>
>>16030202
It really likes oil. This car is inefficient for it's engine size. The back seats are completely useless, if you haven't figured out already. Quite a few used RX-8's have way too much carbon buildup in the engine, because they don't let it heat up or don't rev the engine enough to burn off the deposits
>>
>>16030202
Best value for a used sportscar if you're looking for a car that's 2006+ or newer since their value dropped like a rock after the recalls. You won't find another car that's less than 10 years old for nearly as much value for the money. Simple as that.

If you do regular maintenance (oil changes and sparkplugs), it's more reliable than 90% of used cars, assuming you buy one that is 2006+(2009+ preferably) that wasn't abused to begin with.
When the engine does go, it's cheaper to rebuild and replace than any other engine.

Most other cars from the era are either going to need regular scrubbing of carbon deposits from valves, electrical shit going wrong, bugs in their nanny software literally killing you, or they're simply fucking awful cars.

Fucking car has a god damned carbon fiber drive shaft, amazing suspension, comfortable seats, driver focused interior, sounds pretty nice, 30,000nm/degree of torsional rigidity that's almost 3x that of the S2000 and better than just about every car from the time.

The RX-8 is better than the BR-Z for half the cost. Simple as that.
The BR-Z is more tunable, though.

The downside is that you can fuck up and buy one that was poorly maintained, and the early years were pretty much all lemons, then it's not going to last the 200k+ miles it should.
>>
Take everything that was bad about the FD3S, with none of the good, and you have the RX8
>>
>>16030615

>>
How is the redline and sound on the rx8? Cost to rebuild the rotors? Does it take boost well?
>>
>>16030202
It's a streched miata with an anemic rotary engine. If they released this with a 2.0L+ i4 it'd be a good car.
>>
itt: memespouting and parotting
>>
>>16033298
Yeah lets put in a 2.0 with 150hp.
That'll make it faster....
>>
>>16033369
Don't reply to retards.

Anyway, the RX8 is a dream machine, but really, why didn't they make it a three-rotor? Three rotors is the perfect number for a rotary engine. Prove me wrong.

232 bhp at 3050 lbs is still bretty fast, could be faster, but it's the smoothest ride possible and weight distribution is perfect.

Where's the brap? WHERE'S THE FUCKING BRAP? COME THE FUCK ON, MAZDA, ITS IDLING NOISE IS PATHETIC.
RX9 IDLING BETTER SOUND LIKE A FUCKING HURRICANE
>>
>>16033369
It'll make it better for mundane driving and open it up to turbo/super conversions like the Miata, that way it can fufill the role of fun DD. Tell me the engine out of the Mazdaspeed 6 wouldn't be a good fit for the RX-8.

>>16033394
The goal of the RX8 wasn't a pure performance car like the FD. It was supposed to be a fun little car for the youth a step up in power and practicality from the Miata.
>>
>>16033455
You mean a 2.3 turbo?
With nearly 300hp??
Yes.
But not an eco 2.0L
>>
>>16033468
Even the NA 2.3L/2.5L would be great as a base model for tuning. Look at all the options you've got for power on the Miata and how cheap some of them are. They could have the turbo be an option/trim up and then suddenly the maintenance is manageable for your average person and makes more power than the sad little Renesis engine.
>>
>>16033497
>NA 2.3L/2.5L
So like 160hp or 170hp? Im too lazy to look it up.
Both those engines are shit for tuning. They are economy engines.
Just shut up moron
>>
>>16033513
Come on, kiddo. It's a stroked out version of the MX-5's engine which in turbocharged version powered the Mazdaspeed3/6 which made 274hp/280tq and has some room to be tuned upwards. That's as much as the final iteration of the 13B-REW made.

It's funny how people say it should have been the 2.3L turbo in the CX-7 and Mazdaspeed cars of the time, while bitching about reliability, when that engine was less reliable than the Renesis.

Three rotor Renesis might have been nice, though.
>>
>>16033648
>more reliable than the 2.3L MZR
>needs special care, consistent rebuilds and absolutely LOATHES stop and go traffic, daily hum drum

I too like rotaries, but arguing that it's good for a DD is dumb. That they're bringing the RX-9 back to its roots as an upmarket enthusiast sports car is a good sign and where the rotary is supposed to be.
>>
>>16033648
MZR is crazy reliable. Youre a mong
>>
>>16030249
>It really likes oil
All rotary engines do, anon. Look it up, it's by design.
>>
Dont get it if you cant afford gas, i get around 220 miles on a full tank, and a 5 quart oil jug every 5 to 8 months.

If youre really feeling shitty about a car youre buying get the compression tested. A proper Rotary compression test.

If yo don't like the looks or easy pussy it gets (mileage may vary on driver) or you want a faster drag racing car don't get it.

Really unless you're driving it at a racetrack every fucking day this car wont give you problems. Its more than capable as a daily driver.
>>
>>16033758
It's only a bad DD due to the gas mileage. And gas is $2 now. And didn't the RX-8 run on 87 octane?

They're also more reliable if you do drive the daily.

The maintenance you need to do on the Renesis is the same you need to do on any modern car. An oil change twice as year, or every few thousand miles, and spark plug changes after a while longer.

I feel like it's a good platform to get started out on in motorsports. You can learn shit loads about rotary online, and probably rebuild an engine on your own given time. There's a matt farah one take with an RX-8 I liked. He did mostly suspension mods and car feel. Looked like a blast to drive. I'd say it's not fast, but a good chassis and pretty capable for the price point.

They're cheap right now too so given maybe 3-5k you can get a clean title manual that isn't too beat. Sure memes and apex seals, but those things can happen to badly maintained rotaries.

If you want it for street I'm guessing insurance should be cheaper than other sporty cars, it'll eat gas, and you'll be doing oil changes. At least you can shoot fire and rev your ass to the moon daily.

On the other hand NA and NB miatas can be had for the same price. I would not buy an RX-8 unless it's coming from someone who loved it and is very clean. Or if I had a way to source and good engine and do all the work myself as a project.

Speaking of which, any Rotards here willing to give advice on the FD? I want to buy one, and I've read about the reliability mods. Just anything I should know? I'm prepared to be autistic about the oil changes.

Where could I find one thats mainly unmolested? Craigslist is just bad for FDs

bit larger Aluminum radiator, better oil cooler, replace vacuum lines, and a single turbo help reliability a lot.

Also either premix, or water/alch injection. You can also replace the stock oil pump with a better one.

Recently a friend of mine bought a RX8 at a dealers 2hours away of where we live.
He asked me if I can drive him there to pick it up. We went there, signed of the paper work and went for the 2hours drive back. When he wanted to program the trip on his satnav, he got a problem and it didn't work, so he asked me if I can lead the way.
I made a 2hours roadtrip with an RX8 in my mirror and I just couldn't keep it serious everytime i checked behind me. It was like having a cute/happy animal following you for a walk.

(does someone have the image of "humanised" front end of cars with the RX8?)

>>
>>16037223
>I thought the RX8 body style was too different
I have never understood people say they disliked the styling.
It's been one of my favorite cars visually ever since I first saw it as a kid. Too many triangles, yeah, I admit. Gorgeous car though. Just looks classy.
>>

If you have the right tools, it's easy to repair / replace the engine yourself in an afternoon; therefore, the cost of the engine (not much)

Paying a mechanic to do it... quite a bit more.

While buying Miata last year in Germany I've actually found them at the price range of nice third gen MX-5, around 5-9 thousands Euro.
+cheap to buy
+cheap to insurance, because lol displacement
-engine is a heavy oil drinker
-regular maintenance without cutting corner and by someone who have knowhow of rotary engines is a must.
-it forces different driving style than other engines layout, as per >>16030615
-it is not fuel efficient
- specialized parts are needed for tuning.
>>16033024
All sporty Mazdas are rustbuckets. Hell, most modern cars are rustbuckets.
>>16033455
>fun little car for the youth a step up in power and practicality from the Miata.
I was seriously considering instead of MX-5, because it is slightly more practical. In the end ease of maintenance and lack of roof won but it is still very nice car for money asked.
>>16034024
Which by itself isn't a bad thing, my Lolvo drinks heavily by design as well. It's that people use them without knowing that and damage engine in process. It is not common knowledge that one needs to rev his car to keep engine healthy, it goes again what is teached in driving schools.
>>
The number I see which have blown engines is hilarious. There's always at least one, usually two or three, on the local craigslist-equivalent.

I kind of want to buy a busted one for $1k and have the local rotary shop do whatever the craziest possible NA mods are, but someone told me that the engine doesn't take to porting in the same way the older varieties do. Gay.
>>
>>16038979
I'd definitely get the RX-8 over the NC, unless you want to do some serious tuning. RX-8 is already heavily tuned from the factory.
