ITT: Underrated Engines

GM's 4.3L Vortec, and in particular the LU3, was an underrated engine. There's something about this 90 degree V6. 195 HP and 260 lb-ft. of torque means that it was able to fill its role as a base model half ton van and truck engine just fine. It was basically a 350 with two cylinders chopped off, and with OHV, an iron block and iron heads, it's amazing that the engine was still being offered as the base option on the half ton Silverado up until 2013. The grand irony is that in its later years, the LU3 was scoffed at by truck buyers who would go on to choose a motor that only fires on four cylinders for a majority of the time it's running.

So, /o/gres, what's your favorite underrated engine?

KA24. Superior in almost everyday to the SR20det and ca18det yet is often thrown in the trash due to JDM fanboyism

They still make the 4.3l as an ecotec in base Silverados and GMC Sierras

Muh 96 hardbody has that exact engine in it. Never had a problem out of it. It rattles like crazy when you first start it though. I've read that the tensioners on the timing chain have a spring that wears out over time that's supposed to keep tension on it until oil pressure comes up. Other than that, the 140hp (if I'm lucky) gets me where I need to go. Kinda crappy gas mileage though at 16-17mpg that I'm getting for how small it is. My 95 z28 with the 5.7L v8 gets 19-22mpg on average for comparison.

Torque.... 200hp from a 2l and 200hp from a 4.3l are completely different things. My worn out 4.3's used to spin the shit out of the tires at slightly above idle and were capable of taking Civic's off the line (Impressive, I know).

You can abuse and neglect the 4.3 and it will still run (like shit) forever.

260 lb-ft of torque. It's not a racerboi engine, it's supposed to be a low cost and (moderately) fuel efficient option for trucks and vans.

The Toyota 5VZ-FE V6 puts out 190 HP and 220 ft/lbs with almost a liter less displacement (and came with a dealer option for a supercharger that puts those numbers closer to 255/280).

i have a 4.3l powered S10. its an indestructible boast anchor and sounds pretty good when you rev it up (5200 rpm max rpm like a typical truck engine)

fun fact: the 4.3l was used commonly in performance boats and toyota fork lifts
>>
>>16021898
Im gonna call bs.

Ive got a silverado with the 4.3 v6 vortec, that thing is a gutles PoS. May be good in a car, or even an s10; but a silverado needs more power than this thing produces.
>>
>>16025103
our 4.3l s10 is about as fast as a 5.7l sbc 1500

>and probably gets similar mpg

0-60 in 7.8 seconds is pretty good for an automatic work truck though. actually lots of fun to be had since muh rwd
>>
>underrated!
>ohv!
>scoffed at by buyers who have fuel efficient v8s (lie)!
>>
>>16025015

I've driven both. The 4.3 is more torquey, the 3.4 is more of a car engine and kind of sounds like a vacuum cleaner.
>>
>>16025133
Keep things truck minded. Especially when defending a fucking 4.3 vortec. It does everything it was designed to, well, but like you said it's just a sbc with 2 cylinders cut off. Imagine a sbc s10.

Also for drag racing automatic is superior anyway. Why the fuck would you even think you would have a manual sports truck you maniac?
>>
>>16025176
You need both hands on the wheel to deal with the consequences of trying to drive a fucking truck fast, especially drifting since you mentioned it's rwd

Shit, my 3 were posted in the first 2 posts. Had a D21 pickup that was great at 205k miles, almost bought an S10 instead but the GM plastic interior turned me off. Know a guy with a Mk2 Supra and a mildly built 5M that's a great casual track car.

>Guess that means they're not underrated?
>>
>>16025214

TBI or the newer Vortec? My blazer s10 could do 100mph in headwinds all day, with V8 mpg's though.
>>
>>16021898
Ayy. I drive a 2002 chevy s10

That trucks takes so much fucking abuse. I rev way too high, dont change oil often enough. Tow too much, offroad, race off of lights, do hektik skidz, you name it.

Great engine, a bit thirsty but that block with modernized externals make for a great engine.

100% agree OP good engine.

>>16025238
2004 vortec. Its a dog shit engine, but itll run forever (except for all the electronics)
>>
>>16021898
I'm just sort of a regular joe as far as cars go. I'm not really into the whole racing/max performance thing and I think OP was right on the money.

The 4.3 Vortec was a tough as nails reliable engine. I think it is an excellent get up and go engine, especially in the vehicles it was put into.

I feel the same way about Buicks in general. They aren't the prettiest, fastest, or most elegant cars around, but boy are they built well. Especially the LeSabres. They couldn't do 150 and you'd never fool someone that it was a luxury car, but you could turn the key every morning until the floors fell out and it would start. I'd take that over most anything else.
>>
>>16022255
It got a bad rap as the poverty tier motor for a poorhouse truck from the bottom rung brand in a bottom rung automotive conglomerate that is a few picket lines from being an entirely sino-mexican venture that wasn't allowed to die mercifully because our stupid nigger president handed over a giant wad of tax dollar cash so they could keep producing their garbage redneck mememobiles and rental fleet fodder.

Fuck GM. I want to see every one of their plants torn down or sold to Toyota, and their union slobs standing around wondering what the fuck happened to the gravy train. Teump 2016!
>>
>>16025280
Don't make me show you buicks rankings in reliability. Or Buick's website where the first word is "luxury"
>>
>>16025280
Buicks are built on the same lines as Chevy and pontiacs sharing the same dilapidated platforms. It is literally the same shit. There isn't a Buick team or Buick guys. They just bolt on the Buick tier garbage to the global platform
>>
>>16025302
I don't really care. 7th and 8th generation Lesabres were and are some of the most mechanically reliable vehicles on the road. I had one take me all the way to 350k miles on the same motor and tranny before I retired it. I love them no matter what someone on /o/ says. My personal experience with Buick has been excellent.
>>
>>16025302
Buick is basically confirmation bias bait for retards who think that GM is still competitive, or have a "buy Murrican!" Asshole in their life influencing their purchase.

The same people are either to proud or to afraid of their influencers to complain about the Kmart tier build quality. Which explains the initial quality survey results......whereas tpyota buyers expect perfection, and when even a small issue crops up it becomes reported compare to expecting garbage from Buick.

>GM is trash
They make regular vehicles for regular people. Same with Ford.

Sorry that not every single vehicle produced is some ching chong rice-a-roni machine. Would it make you happier if they started putting twin turbos in all of their cars and spoilers on their trucks?

Also, Toyota and all these other manufacturers that /o/ hold up are total memes. If you are buying a brand new truck/car, sure, buy Toyota. If not, fucking don't.

>Muh reliability
Toyotas are a lot more reliable than their peers in GM, however nothing runs perfectly forever. Enjoy paying at least 4-5 times as much for parts. Also, Toyotas rust just like every other car on the road. A top of the line Toyota will get rusty from the road salt just as quickly as the truck GM had to physically push off the line. The only difference is that you'll pay way more to have it fixed.

Basically, unless you're getting a new vehicle, you should probably buy GM. Because, at least where I live, the biggest killer of cars isn't the engine or tranny going bad. It's the road salt. A 2008 Tacoma with 100k miles is going to be headed to the scrap yard just as fast as a 2008 Silverado with 100k miles. The only difference at all is how much you'll have to pay when something inevitably goes wrong.

Yeah, I'll just take my car to a car wash every single day I drive during the winter. Do you even live in the north? This is what an average car looks like after 1 day of driving in January-March here in PA.
>>
>>16025471
>You don't live in the Midwest, do you?

No, thank god.
>>
>>16025450
I know that we all probably work on our own cars, but have you ever even been in a shop? A lot of places around here charge the same rate for foreign/imports as they do for work on cars like Audi, BMW, or Mercedes.

There is a significant difference in price between parts for GM and an import like Toyota. Lord save you if you have something happen to your car that you can't fix. You will pay big for it if you take it to a shop. That's why Toyota is a meme. They are reliable vehicles, but they rust, they are expensive to maintain, and if you aren't a car person they will cost many times more to maintain compared to something like a GM. They aren't bad vehicles, but there is are trade offs when you buy one.
>>
>>16025496
Then don't fucking talk about rust. There's a reason that serious collectors out here store and refuse to drive classics in the winter. Once winter comes, there's no amount of washing that will save your car from rust. Hell, apart from smearing cosmoline on the rocker panels or going under your car with POR-15, there's not much you can do.

My nomination for underrated engine goes to nissan VG series. It's able to hold a shit ton of power in boosted form due to overbuilt 90s japanese design. It just got a bad rap for being installed into a difficult to modify car (300zx). The JZ and RB counterpart rose to fame due to easily modified turbos and they were installed in better platforms, whereas the VG could hold similar power but remained unpopular, thus underrated.

Late 50s to early 60s chevy inline 6 235. Only 4 main bearings, but nearly indestrucable in its day.
>>
most of the engines mentioned in this thread arent underrated at all. the 4.3 was a very popular light truck engine for more than 20 years. The 3.8 was put into every car that could fit it. landcruiser engines have always been super reliable as are many other toyota engines.
Nissan vg and gm's stovebolt six...ok getting closer. Although both were still very popular engines.

now GMC big block v6...thats an underrated engine. Or the quad 4 olds, for ingenuity or sheer bravery.

I have a 235 in my 1961 truck. I think it has about 90 or 100hp from the factory. Its revs to maybe 3000-3500 but it sounds like it might fly apart at any second at that rpm.
>>
>>16021898
Even better: the LV3. All aluminium, basically an 5th-gen LT1 with cilinder lopped off. 285hp/305 ftlbs, and 297/330 on E85. Flex fuel, direct injection, and an output that would be above par for a V8 ponycar in the early 2000's.

I really want one, and slap an Eaton supercharger on top, straightoff a 3800.
>>
>>16025602
The JZ and RB have their sexy I6 cred going for them though, the VG is just a V6.
>>
>>16027436
More expensive, emissions controls since 2007 and all the DPF/DEF shit that comes with them, modern diesels are more complex, and so on.

Yeah, a diesel would be nice, but the 4.3L Vortec did a pretty good job at what it was supposed to do.
