It's not like you've got a 500 a week gambling problem. 3: If a car like this is considered a huge financial burden you need a better job and shouldn't be having a family in the first place. A Civic sedan or hatch would work fine. VW GTI can work, but the hatch is really short, which will get annoying. The Mazda3's backseats are on the smaller side, but if neither of you are tall, it's an option. None of those are terribly sporty, even the GTI, imo. Other than lacking power, I thought the Mazda3's suspension and steering were better than the GTI's. The Focus has the same backseat size issue as the Mazda3, but at least it has an ST version.

Kids don't need a lot of rear leg space, so even a small car will work. By the time the kid grows up, the car will be so old your wife has sold it off and your family now has a pink feminine wifeymobile for you to drive.

Now, more seriously, new cars have attachments to stabilize baby carriers. That way, they do not tilt forward during a crash. Look at the rear dashboard and you will see a cosmetic latch plate. Lift that up and it exposes an attachment point for the child seat. My new car has three of them corresponding to each seat position in back (right rear, center rear, and left rear).

If your choice of sporty commuter car doesn't have those latch points, then you'll have to retrofit or choose to not have them.
