I 20 now, how much would you cost to get a truck and a camping shell with a bed and basics in the back just saving money on rent and basically living out of there and a gym?
>Inb4 military

What truck and shell do I get?
Cheapest most reliable answer wins.
Also, any Washington or Alaska bros willing to hire? In 1 year I went from being homeless for a week, to working 2 jobs 65hrs a week, biking 600mi+ a month sleeping on flour sacks at work. I'll get shit done if you give me a chance.

You aren't going to be a good employee if you are sleeping in the back of a truck so it's a money loser in the long run.

In that case, you try your damn best to keep going.

You could go with an 06 ford ranger. Get a RWD as the resale for those were poor so they are currently cheap. Install a manual locking rear diff and you have decent off-road capability.

Build your own shell if you want to save money. Browse DIY forums if you need a start.

How do you expect anyone to answer that?

Go on craigslist, look at truck prices. Buy the best truck you can afford.
Add $500 for a shell. $1000 for truck repairs the first year. Another $1000 for construction materials and equipment.

At no time of the year in Washington will it be too cold to be in a light sleeping bag, unless you are literally in the Cascades.

Unless you sealed the shit out of the shell...and the tailgate, you're going to more or less have ambient temperature in there at night. I'd say the coldest I have ever seen when I get up at 3/4am for work is 25F in dead winter. I've seen snow that would hinder normal daily driving (again, not in the Cascades) maybe two times in 4 years.

That's pretty rich coming from a guy who wants to live in a van so he can have a kid (who, because he'll grow up in a van of all places, will grow up at best completely disattached from his peers because of lifestyle differences, or a complete outcast)
You have no obligation to get a child. Especially if you cannot "afford" to have one. It's not a duty, it's something that places a lot of duties upon you, including being able to raise him/her properly and in favourable condition. IF you are considering living in a van or truck because it would be cheapet, you should not even consider having a child. Not until you can give said child a stable place for his/her upbringing.

>I'm trying to save money
Living in a truck, caravan or motorhome is actually much more expensive that one might think at first.
You're in constant need for fuel, you are dependant on others for the times you will need to reload your battery, you might end up spending a lot in gas bottle for cooking or something like this, constant use of your vehicule will make some of it wear faster and thus you might end up in a state of constant need to repair elements that would usually have aged much slower.
This sort of life will at first make yo usave some money compared to living with a small rent every month, but the longer it goes, the more expensive it gets until the point where any sedentary living would be more economical.
And that's not even taking all the legal issues into account.
Seriously if you want to start saving money for later, you would be better off considering not having any personnal vehicule.

Anyway, OP, to actually answer your question:

Basically you want the biggest van you can get for cheap. Which means something pretty damn old, probably. Or a high mileage fleet vehicle.

Big means you don't have to worry about scratching your head planning on how you're going to make a livable space out of it. It means you can fit some Ikea shit in there. It means you can fit a furnace and shit, too. And extra insulation won't cut into too much space.
Since you want to live out of it, not just camp, you need all the amenities.

Get something with a payload capacity of at least 1500lb

You're going to have to be able to outfit it yourself for it to be cheap. Labor will be a bit cost if you pay someone else to, but the materials are cheap.

Anyway, what is your budget? For $15k-$20k you can get a Sprinter or Transit that's 2010+ and will have a more compact suspension, better chassis, better fuel economy, more reliable, etc. Then it'll be another like $6k-$10k to outfit it.
But if you need something under $10k fully built, well you just view vans on craigslist and try to pick the most appropriate van, then you figure out how to wire it, install an extra battery, get your fridge/freezer, your portable stove, your heater, etc.

>What truck and shell do I get?
A van

I had a custom shell made for my F250 crew cab long bed, made it like 33"above the rails front to back and it was horrible. I mean you could sit up in bed or in a camping chair, I built 3 different interiors but it sucked so bad compared to my old G20 van that I bought an E350 camper.

In a van there is plenty of room, you can insulate easily and I've lined in everything from a single platform bed down one side and a crate for the stove to a full pop up, toilet, sleep four, 4x4 van. Vans are just better in every way.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, obviously a van.

A truck is a terrible idea. The "floor" of them is way too high up to get much usable space.

A FWD van will have the most efficient use of space, but that assumes you don't need to off-road.

Now I want to do this too.
Think I could get a van for like 3k and rebuild for maybe 1k?
>>
>>16024926
What do you mean by rebuild?

You mean do the actual build? Yeah maybe, depends on what you want. If you just want some shelves, bed, and 120v outlets, sure. You can just use plywood and shit. Maybe you can find some used insulation(that doesn't have asbestos still, obviously).
But that doesn't leave much to spare if something is wrong with the van and you got ripped off. Like even it having a dead battery would set you back quite a bit.

I've seen some Ecoline vans on ebay for under $2000, even, too. Really you can find vans for less than that, but try to go for something that's a reliable model/engine-configuration.
The 7.3l that is often in the Ecoline are known to last for 500k+, even 1million+ miles. Though if it's the 4R100 transmission in a, it 4x4 sucks and would surely need a rebuild if you get one of those.

They're just called a "pop up".

Generally you put a bed there and you have a place to sleep while parked without interfering with your "living" space while it's parked.

It's extra space that unfolds. I've not heard of one insulated so it's not great for cold weather. They're basically attached tents.

You also have "pop outs". They're WAY more expensive and way more of an engineering challenge. Pop ups are as simple as cutting a big square hold and bolting it on.

God.. now I want to make a Honda Fit livable with a pop up and pop out combination. :/

A junkyard Westfalia? Don't they go for like $8000 in completely shit condition, up to tens of thousands of dollars? Can't really imagine there's a lot sitting in a junk yard.

I'm white, grew up in a small mountain town called Big Bear.
My family before any other family.
My race before any other race.
My country before any other country.
Also, I can give references.
Yeah, references help.
What's the job? My lease ends in april.

Pop tops are like $5000-$10000 to buy a "kit".

The DIY option, rather than to try to find a junkyard westfalia, I think is to buy a "high top" for $1200 or less and turn it into a pop-top with tent material, steel/aluminum square tubing, springs, and joints. It's simple if you just want to do one that pops up in a V shape like a westfalia. The straight up style is more complicated to engineer and keep a good seal while driving.

You could also just simply go with a super high top. Hurts fuel economy and crosswind performance, but it's simple.

You also need a shower if you're going to hold a job, OP.

I'm a manager at a local car dealership. Do you have any sales or mechanical experience? What do you want to make?

No, it's a pop top since it's accessible from the inside. Overlanding tents have to be entered from outside.

No experience in sales.
Mechanical experience is limited to a few bikes me and my dad put together.
Since that's lower, idk. 25k a year? or maybe 15ish an hour.
I'd be ok with negotiating.

A guy I knew from engineering school did this. Upon graduating, he decided to travel across North America before settling into his life as a number crunching eng for the rest of his life.

From what I saw when he was putting his truck together, this is what he did:

He bought a 96 Dodge 2500 12v 5 speed 2wd regular cab long bed off some old guy for around $4,000. No idea the miles but it was in fairly decent shape with little rust. Already had a canopy on it, and it was one that had the sliding window and then a sliding rear window on the truck cab so you had a little window into the canopy through the cab. He then installed an Espar coolant and cab heater that he rerouted to produce heat into the canopy area. Hard to explain how it looked without pics. From there, his bed space looked pretty much what you can have pictured. Put a small single bed onto of some small wooden holding areas on the left, put curtains on all of the canopy windows, installed a light and an inverter, and used the right for mainly more storage. Put a lock on the inside of the canopy for when he slept in there. Put light insulation on the inner shell and bed and then covered it carpeting to help keep heat in.

Anyway, he said it was pretty cozy to sleep in even when the temp fell below 15F. I think he made it to Alaska, then down to California and then came back to Colorado. I think he ended up selling the truck for like $7,000 after, lol.

I'm somehow not surprised you don't have a good paying job if that's how you present yourself.
Can you define yourself by something other than things you have no control over?

Hmmm I like working out, I'm learning German slowly, I have customer service experience, but nothing like sales, the most mechanical experience i have are a few simple motorized bikes me and my dad put together and my cousin's dirt bike when he tore everything to complete shit.

I'm in a similar situation, my paternal grandfather had 4 daughters and 4 sons and only one of the sons had a child (my dad, obviously). So it's up to me to keep the lineage going but I don't really give a shit. My genes are bad and I don't really wanna breed shitty people. And I don't wanna destroy my own life.

Just kidding, I'm a kissless eternal virgin.
