It had a 3 speed auto with no overdrive and it got single digit mpg in the city and like 10-11 on the highway. It had low oil pressure and it was starting to get a rod knock, I was too poor to fix it yadda yadda yadda, so I just sold it and was carless for like six months, then I bought the ranger. 20mpg highway and working AC is nice, but I still miss the character of the waggy.

I had the 2.5 5-speed. It would have been fine as a car but makes for a shit truck. Doesn't help that my first vehicle was a Ram 1500 with a torquey V8. I expected better than 20 mpg from it too but only ever got that on one occasion. I had it for a few months and had to replace the idle air control valve and both coil packs. It also had a rear axle bearing going bad. it was a relatively low mile truck.

Is it like off road capable at all? I mean I can take this almost anywhere that isn't a purpose built insane trail and it won't break in half, or I can put it up on 44s and rockwells. The renegade is the best looking jeep in a long time but I worry it's about as strong and capable as a civic when it comes to wheeling.

The biggest issue I see with the Renegade is that it's not really any good unless you get the Trailhawk, which is priced $5k more than it's Subaru competitor, which has better ground clearance [although the engine leaves much to be desired power wise] and more cargo space.

Post 1997 they changed over from the twin traction beam to an A arm setup which is what I have. The TTB is more robust I guess. Try and find one with a manual transfer case too because this electric unit has been pissing me off and I'm probably just gonna swap in a manual transfer case. Also, 1998-2000 have these shitty pulse vacuum locking hubs that break all the time, but you can replace them with manual locking hubs. In 2001 they switched to the 4.0 SOHC over the 4.0 OHV. The SOHC makes 40-50 more horsepower than the OHV but has some timing chain guide issues in the early years and I think the timing chain is in the back of the engine making it a really big pain to fix. That's pretty much the extent of my ranger knowledge.
