Sup /o/ I just recently recieved the keys to my uncle's old Cutlass Supreme. Not sure what year. Anyway just wanted your guys opinion on the motor. Not sure if its worth fixing up or just doing a swap.

Pic related.
>>
Wow we can tell literally nothing from this pic

It's probably a V8 but we can't even see the whole distributor at least take the fucking airbox off.

Jesus.
>>
OP here my bad i'll post some more pics soon just wanted a reply first
>>
Year and what engine specifically would be helpful. Looks late 70's. The engine is not a powerhouse. Probably makes less than 200hp. You'd really help it by researching and removing all the emissions crap. Like that foil tube coming from the exhaust manifold to the intake (literal hot air intake to improve emissions when cold) and most importantly removing the catalytic converters in the exhaust. An exhaust shop can cut them off and weld some straight pipe in their place.
>>
>>16018206
Pretty sure that's illegal even on cars old enough to be exempt. He'll need better flowing manifolds on both ends too if not a new head though porting can go a long way.

tl;dr it's worth hacking around on the existing engine even just as a learning experience if you have the budget to do a swap any time.

4th gen. Chances are very high that the engine in it is shit but the good news is that there's tons of aftermarket and good junkyard shit that will go into it. Get it up and running good as a learning experience while you save your pennies for a 350.

There's so much smog related bullshit I can't even tell what I'm looking at you'll be removing a bunch of that shit and putting it right in the trash. The distributor seems to be sitting behind the airbox by the firewall (fucking chevies). Does it have SIX wires arranged around the center wire or EIGHT?
>>
>>16018311
how different is mounting a rocket 455 compared to a 350?

OP here sorry for the fucking mess I just got the keys to this car a few hours ago. I was told the car hasn't run for 7-8 years. So it's been pretty neglected. Budget wise im not looking to spend a lot. This is a learning project since im limited mechanically.
>>
>>16018349
>BBC
you shut your whore mouth with that comment
>>
>>16018246
What kind of cuck are you?
>>
>>16018464
I'm just saying a shop is likely to refuse to do it. Of course it needs to be done.

>>16018378
Syphon all the old gas out of the tank and put in at least 3 gallons of fresh with some fuel system cleaner. Put in a new battery even if it's just borrowed. Make sure it has oil and coolant - maybe even change the oil if you're feeling the $10. Spray some starting fluid down the carb. Leave the lid off it. Turn it over and see what happens.
>>
>>16018408
At least I didn't have my fox retrofitted to run 134a refrigerant - as if it ever had A/C to begin with.
>>
Gangsta ass whip my friend! My older brother has one just like but it's older and a brougham
>>
>>16018559
>Literally has a bro-ham.
How cool is he?
>>
>>16018508
Always change the oil. Always.
>>
>>16018508
OP here thanks for the tip will do.
>>16018559
Thanks br/o/ my uncle gave me the keys to it and I just want to get it up and running as a project and learning experience. Unfortunately he's an alcoholic and neglected the shit out of this car.

On a side note anybody know where to find the VIN for this car?
>>
>>16018177
Is it a 305 or a 350? Either way it's better than the shit Olds 307 most of them came with.
>>
>>16018649
Not sure I'm not to familiar with these cars. I'm more of a ford guy and i'm mechanically limited. Any info identifying the model would help.
>>
>>16018605
either on the door or the corner of the headliner on the passenger side
>>
>>16018605
Don't blame the alcohol. Perfectly sober people neglect cars all the time.
>>
>>16018177
Engine is a Chevrolet. Probably a 305.

FWIW putting Chevy engines in Oldsmobiles without declaring it earned GM a lawsuit that they lost since people considered the Olds Rocket engines as superior and considered the Chevies as downgrades
>>
>>16018508
>Spray some starting fluid down the carb

I've found pre filling the carb with fuel helps rather than cranking till it pumps through.
>>
>>16018326
>Does it have SIX wires arranged around the center wire or EIGHT?
I see four plug wires coming down to the left head in >>16018298

>Someone call kit kat to identify this engine
>>
pull the sparks plugs
drop about a half ounce of oil in each cylinder
let it sit for a day before you try to crank the engine
just do it
>>
>>16018246
If it's exempt from emissions it's exempt period
>>
>>16018900

I can take more picks if u guys need it. Just tell me what angle you need it from
>>
>>16018926

>>
>>16018926
Like I said before in the thread ima noob whenit comes to cars.
>>
>>16018929
Kinda hard since everything is such a dirty mess and it's night time here, but i'll try. Stand by
>>
>>16018893
Yeah if you can get to the bowls. Somebody in another thread said they stuck a fuel soaked rag in there. I dunno. Starting fluid is usually enough for me there's not much gross-gas in the lines. I am pretty hard on batteries though.

>>16018605
NP it's good for my soul for some kid to fire up an old carbureted V8. There should be a vin plate on the dash very close to the windshield, made to be read through it.
>>
>>16018926
Naw I'm good. It's an eight. You can see the distributor in >>16018341
It also has a QuadraJet four barrel

>>16018961
>Yeah if you can get to the bowls
2 Float bowl vents. One is in the middle just ahead of the air cleaner stud and the other is the round tube just in front of the primary side air horn. A plastic coke bottle with a small hole put in the cap will do nicely for putting some gas down either.
>>
>>16018919
Yeah people say this but it's only been 7 or 8 years not 20 and it seems to have been garaged. He could also just try to turn the crank by hand just to see if the cylinders move freely before he lubes them.

>>16018924
Nope you're wrong. I just looked at the Clean Air Act. It's a federal crime to remove any functioning catalytic converter or to remove a non-functioning one without replacing it. Federal fines are up to $2,500 for private parties $25,000(!) for garages. Even in my non-emissions county garages are reluctant to discuss it at all and I can see why!
>>
>>16018937
Sorry couldnt get the pics. fucking hood latch is rusted nd wouldnt open
>>
>>16018961
Thanks br/o/ther i'm just some kid trying to get an old car running instead of ricing out a some honda
>>
>>16019057
Not that there's anything wrong with honda's
>>
>>16019057
>>16019092
There's nothing wrong with having both really. A civic would make a fine first car while you're messing with your project it would certainly be more reliable than this G body is going to be for a long long time and until "lots" of time and money gets put into it.
>>
>>16019162
Yeak i know my first car was a 96 civic ek coupe with a d16y8. Now I own a 4.6 3v V8 2010 Mustang GT. Point being I know how to work on those specific cars, but i need help with this Cutlasd Supreme since i'm a noob when it comes to working on cars overall.
>>
>>16018961
>Yeah if you can get to the bowls

I just pull the fuel line off and fill it via that. I had to fill it a few times as the fuel pump started with a stuck valve. It soon came good with bit of a suck on it and letting it pump full tilt into a can.

>>16018988
>bowl vents

Mine has a bowl vent shut off solenoid valve. I know the old ones that were always open you could do that. If it doesn't have sight glass you could easy over fill it down the vent pipes if you weren't careful.

Another trick a mate told me is pull out the spark plugs and short the coil HT lead to ground so as not to fuck the coil. Stick a squirt of oil down each plug hole then crank it for 30 seconds to prime the internal oil system without dry load on everything.
>>
>>16018961
Couldnt find the VIN on the dashCutlass. Anybody else know a way to find an ID for a 4th gen cutlass
>>
>>16019397
Do you have any paperwork?
>>
>>16019460
None at all. This car was very neglected and i dont know what kind of paperwork is associated with it. It's just a family hand-me-down. Which know that I think about it seems kind of shady.
>>
>>16019397
How long have VINs existed anyhow? I never remember them on old cars. There was some other numbers.
>>
>>16019613
Cars have always had some form of VIN since it started out an identifier number for the manufacturer. The current 17-digit style didn't start until 1980. That Cutlass has a small bright metal tag down at the bottom of the windshield on the side in front of the driver (left side). It's not 17 digits though.

Other than that there's a printed tag in the left door jamb either on the end of the door itself or on the body where the door striker bolt is. It'll have some legalese bs on it with the VIN down towards the bottom.

There are others but the locations are hidden, like at the top middle of the windshield opening under the windshield and its sealer, and frequently require some sort of disassembly to see. IIRC there's like 11 locations in all. You'd have to look them up for exact where they are.
