it was still effectively the same car with a more polarizing body.

The E30-body is just an E20 with a refreshed version of old N platform. Even the old 2GR and 4GR are carried over virtually unchanged. All the E30 offers is more engine options and love-it=or-hate-it styling.

It was heavier than it needed to be because Lexus designed it in mind to make a convertible version later on and so the base structure of the chassis was reinforced. But because the production convertible was killed off, the RC is now stuck as a heavy coupe with no excuse for its extra weight anymore.
