What does /o/ think of a 2002 Audi A6 4.2 quattro? This guy is selling it to me for $2500, it's an excellent condition and only at 120k miles.

Not too bad, but would much prefer an old BMW

Well, I have that Audi and this 1992 BMW 318i in my sights right now, they're both at $2500, but the 318i is a 146k.
>>
>>16016365
>>16016396
Between these I'd go for the Audi because the 318i is old and slow as shit and non-6-cylinder BMWs are not real BMWs, but in the larger scope I'd look for different offers. The Audi will most likely be an unrealible, understeering turd moneypit.
>>
>>16016365
No. It's a shitty Passat in drag and its at the perfect mileage to need the timing chain pictured above. An e46 is infinitely better.

Shit, here's my local CL: https://minneapolis.craigslist.org/search/cta

I just need something to upgrade from a PT Cruiser that I was handed down.
>>
>>16016454
Too lazy to search, but 6cyl BMWs are generally pretty reliable and have a little pep. Just gotta find one with a clean body like a 325i or 525i.
>>
>>16016454
Budget?
>>
>>16016556
Not much, only looking for something at or below $3k.

I did find a 325i for $2500, with only 149k miles. That sounds pretty good and it looks as though they've kept it nice and clean.
>>
>>16016365
I had this same car, one year older. Loved it and miss it every day. Does the guy have records of like timing belt and other maintenance?
>>
Moderately quick car, but boring as all hell. Zero road feel.

maintenance will fuck you eventually

t. used to own one
>>
>>16016593
>>16016596
For the Audi, he says he's recently changed the timing belt and has worked on it, so it should be in good shape.

I did find two other good offers for the BMW's.

I think that's the generation after these, the old V8 uses belts. The chain-driven version was introduced with the B6 S4.

pretty solid car, but i loath every other motors in audis than 2.2 I5's + the 3.2 liter vr6 ones

If you like the challenge in maintaining stuff yourself, that 4.2 is the way to go

I'm seeing that the Audi's will need a lot of maintenance and keep in mind I'm just a dumb 21 year old who's only ever changed his crankshaft and camshaft sensor on the PT Cruiser I got.

So, maybe this isn't the the car for me, I'm guessing.
>>
>>16016695
The engine itself isn't bad, nor is the rest of the drivetrain if it's a manual. It's just that everything around it will fail.
>>
>>16016695

And you guesses right.

Plus, it's nothing more than a disguised VW with a premium extra on everything because hurr durr audi.
>>
>>16016708
>>16016701
Fuck, I've been trying to look for a nice Passat, Jetta or Golf but majority of them usually have some rust bubbles throughout the body or are just dirty to a point where it's disgusting.
>>
>>16016723
Fun fact, the B5 Passat shares a ton of parts with that Audi.

I would get that Civic in a heartbeat but here's the embarrassing thing that I have to admit.

I don't know how to drive a manual.
>>
>>16016766
Ah, it's a 3.0 and an auto at that as well. Those are to be avoided anyway, so I suppose you dodged a bullet there.

>>16016778
Driving manual isn't hard, we recently had a thread that pretty much covered the basics. Might still be in the archive.
If you know the theory and get a few minutes of practice in a parking lot you'll be able to get it home no problem.

I still don't get what is supposed to be so horribly complicated about this.

Do you burgers still use steam engines?
The fuck is wrong with some chains and some gears?
>>
>>16016885
The fact that everything is on the flywheel side of the engine, and those guides wear out. The rebuild kit alone costs 3k and requires you to pull the engine.
>>
>>16016778
So get it and learn. It's easy.

The B5 gen were identical as far as I'm concerned.
Only difference was in America the A4 got the quattro with the 1.8T, where as the passat only got FWD.
>>16016365
Not worth it unless you have a second vehicle or are willing to spend some serious time frustrated by it.
>>16016885
It's an expensive and tedious bit of maintenance that is only there because of VAG's horrible plastics.
>>16016778
Get it and learn. Not much damage to be done if you take your time and use the clutch.
>>
>>16017507
>The B5 gen were identical as far as I'm concerned.
Almost. The Passat's rear suspension is lifted from the A6, not the A4.
>>
>>16017514
Thank you for pointing that out.

Really? Is it the V8? Or maybe the double wishbone suspension? Fucking source you Nigger.
>>
>>16017661
>double wishbone
You mean multilink. Also, he meant it for generations before b5. The V8 didn't come around until later.
>>
>>16017661
Certain engines (2.8 V6 and 1.8T for example), gearboxes, front suspension between the A4 and Passat is exactly the same, rear suspension is lifted from the A6.

Most Passats are closer to the Golf than the Audi counterparts, but teh B5 is an exception.
>>
>>16016365
>only at 120k miles.
Nice so only around 240k miles in Audi mileage.
>>
>>16016396
The only 318 worth getting is the 318ti.
>>
>>16016365
I owned two of these, both 2000 model years.
It's a comfy car, don't think of it as anything else. Automatic transmission, no matter how well it's taken care of, will fail, generally at 220-250,000 kilometres, no way around it.

Window motors will die, the driver side window switches should be replaced because the originals will also die. Timing belt requires more time and more money, but while the engine is out its a lot easier to do anything else that needs to be done. I put about 180,000 km combined on both of mine, had no major issues, but again, that's just my experience.

If you can, go for the 2.7TT with a manual. Let the oil warm up, let the oil cool down a minute or so before turning it off and the turbos should be okay. If you upgrade or mod the engine, your turbos will die, so upgrade them.

>>16017691
C5 A6 and B5 Passat ar about as far apart as it gets in VAG.
