Hun-day. Somehow, some people I work with in an automotive shop haven't figured out that it's not Hawn-day and regularly confuse Hyundais for Hondas and vice versa. They're not even close and none of their vehicles look similar, I can't figure out how they keep messing this up.

This. When the original translation of Korean was brought over to the states there was a lot of weird mix ups. A classic case is Dongducheon. Up until fairly recently it was simply called TDC (Tongducheon) by Americans. Another is is Pusan/Busan, the lettering is misleading as ㅂ is both a p/b sound, pronounced together, make a light raspberry when you use it. English doesn't really do this so one letter was chosen and they ran with it. Hyundai is the same exact thing. Looking at 현대 you get Hyeon, written as Hyun is fine. Breaking 대 you get a d/t sound along with what fucks roundeyes up, the A with an I stuck to to it. 이 is ee/ii on it's own but paired with 아 you get aee. It's a placement issue. Depending on where 이 it is placed in a sentence determines how it's pronounced. Having driven both I'd have to say the Avante is much better than the Elantra version. Also the old Tucsons aren't bad either but everything else they make is pretty shitty, especially their newer stuff.
