Viper in the US. Cobra/Vodafone in the EU. Don't bother with anything other than ensuring immobilizer/chip key works properly and that it'll alert you if someone forced the hood/trunk/doors, shattered the glass, or towed your car. Alarms won't deter shit, no one gives a fuck that your shit is getting jacked other than you.

From there a good GPS tracking system will cover the remaining cases.

In the USA, Viper is the dominant brand that seems to work year after year without some sudden mysterious failure. The price of an installed system varies a lot depending on where you go. It used to be that older cars could have installations under the hood, but the new cars need to have dash removal and some adapter harness interface added. I had mine done at one of those car audio shops.

There is a choice of ultrasonic scanning detector and glass breakage detector. The glass detector has two types. One sits under the dash and senses the sound of breaking glass. The other approach is expensive and has one in each door.

One advantage of the ultrasonic type is that it can be set to be extra sensitive and chirp when someone gets next to the car. Thus the night time car prowler gets warned to go elsewhere.

But a lot of burglars will smash and grab what they can, even sometimes doing so while the owner is outside angrily shouting. As long as they have their hoodie and some obscuring of the face, they can't be identified so they are bold.
