Forward pegs or forward controls? There is a difference.

Mid controls are best in traffic while forward pegs allow room to stretch on highway. OTOH forward controls don't come with mid pegs and are much more awkward. You can typically downshift and brake with your heels using your mid controls if needed while feet are on highway pegs.

College student, colorado school of mines. Looking for a decent small bike, i have motocross experience. Things holding be back are price and license endorsement. I can probably do the endorsement next summer but idk whats a good bike. Looking under 2K, something like a honda rebel or yamaha v star 250 are the closest ive seen so far to my PR. you don't need to remove the valve cover to set TDC on a DR-Z. On the left side magneto cover there are 2 allen key plugs. A big one on the left side and a small one on top. Remove them both. Under the big plug plug there is a big hex head you can put a socket on to turn the engine by hand, and under the small plug you can see marks on the flywheel. Remove the spark plug and turn the engine slowly until you see the T and a line centered with the small timing view hole.

When the cams are at any point but TDC on the compression stroke, one or more lobes are pushing down on a valve bucket. When you release all tension from the cam chain, the cams can rotate under force from the valve spring. This could cause the cam chain sprockets to skip a tooth on the chain. Many would not even recognize if or when that cams rotated, let alone understand that while no damage has been done YET, they do need to check the cam timing now.. If you put the motor at TDC, none of this is an issue

I commute ~70 miles a day. Lanesplitting 75% of it during bay area traffic. I've been taking this route 5 days a week for a year.
~2 months ago, I was clipped by a driver on the freeway who sent me crashing into a another car in the next lane. The driver who hit me left the scene. I walked away with some sprains and roadrash. Bike was totaled. I was just was happy to be alive. And admittedly, there were a few things I could've done better to avoid incidents like this.
I wasn't shaken. Bought a brand-new bike, waited for my wounds to heal and got back out there.
Yesterday-- while traffic is moving along only at ~35mph, an older guy neglects to signal and cuts his wheel into my lane, leg and ankle. I didn't even have time to apply brake or attempt to evade before going down. This time, my injuries are a bit worse, but I'm ok.
I'm baffled. I don't know what my takeaway is. I'm feeling depressed because I'm wondering if statically - this is going to keep happening over the years. I think I'll have to go back to caging to work and only ride on the weekends.
What would you do?

Low-sided a while ago and I finally got word from the insurance company that they're totaling my bike. The amount I'm getting is enough to cover my loan plus a little extra I'm putting towards some other expenses, but not enough to buy a new bike.
